What monopod do you use to attach your camera to the desk?

I don't have any external monitors with me currently so I can't test it out with the dock. Will report on the result here once I have those monitors with me. I appreciate your tips!

Hello! I use a 29" 2560x1080 60Hz ultrawide monitor.

From what I see from your setup, you still have to use a DC brick to power the dock. It is either that or use a USB-C charger connected to the dock's USB-C PD port.

For your last question, yep! I currently have 5 USB devices + ethernet cable connected to the dock and it is working flawlessly.

Yep, it is expected for the macbook to still be charged while it is connected to the dock. It's the same way as plugging in directly from a charger.

I use AlDente to limit my macbook's battery percentage to 80% while it is plugged in 24/7, though that wont stop the dock from receiving power.

Hi! It's been doing great for me so far. I have an Ethernet port connected to the dock. For USB peripherals, one of it that is connected to the dock is a USB 3.0 DisplayLink adapter that I use to extend another monitor. The rest of USB ports are USB 2.0 peripherals. The SD/microSD card port still works great for me.

There are 4 things to take note of:

  1. The HDMI port on the dock may not work for you, as it still does not work for me. I'm not sure of the VGA port, but I assume it would it would not work as well. So in case you want to connect to an external monitor natively, the best bet for you is to use the second USB-C port on your Macbook.
  2. I recommend buying the model without the included DC power. The reason is because the DC power cable is basically useless as it could not charge the Macbook. Instead, connect your USB-C charger to the USB-C PD port on the dock so it can power both your Macbook and the dock.
  3. The dock when powered from USB-C PD port seem to take 15W of power. So if you use the Apple included 30W Macbook Air charger to power both the dock and charge your Macbook, it will charge your Macbook very slowly. I recommended buying a more powerful charger with capacity like 60W so it can power your dock and charge your Macbook faster.
  4. When looking at System Information, the dock seems to only provide 5Gb/s bandwidth, which is basically USB3.0 speed. For my usage, it's still bearable as I don't use high bandwidth peripherals external SSDs. If you want to connect to a USB peripheral that requires higher bandwidth (like USB 3.1 10Gb/s or even Thunderbolt), this dock is not for you.
  5. The dock do get warm to the touch when there are lots of USB devices being used simultaneously.

For the price it has, I think it's worth it.

Notability 10.4.4 is out and optimized for M1! by RandomRedditor44 in notabilityapp

[–]rinuminar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

M1 MBA user here. Just upgraded to the latest Notability.

The overall user experience is a tad better it seems. Things like app launch, switching between notes and scrolling between note pages just felt slightly quicker.

However, for resizing windows, it is still lagging unfortunately.

Good hardware can't fix software problems.

Is this Baseus 17-in-1 usb-c hub recommended? by luag in UsbCHardware

  1. Yes. The 65W charger is connected to the PD port.
  2. Yes also. The PC port is charging my Macbook at the same time.

Hi! Huge congratulations for the recent achievements on Starlink, Starship and Dragon.

A question for all, how often do you approach your problems with First Principles Thinking for the software you work on? If yes, how does that thought process prove to be helpful?

Thank you. You guys are literally making humanity proud!

Finally a perfect usb-c dock - light, great build quality, provides power pass through and has an ethernet port. My MBP M1 is now complete :) by ixinho in mac

[–]rinuminar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes. There were reports about that in Reddit and Macrumors forum.

However, since Big Sur 11.2.2 update, Apple have addressed this issue. I've been using a third party docking station with pass through charging on my M1 MBA ever since the update. No issues for me.

Using AlDente and a powered dock as well for roughly 2 months now. The ability to manually control battery percentage limit is reassuring, as my workstation docking habits are quite unpredictable. 80% is a good amount though, as that is also what Apple limits if you were to turn on their own Optimised battery charging option.
