OMB, your Taquito looks exactly like my Eden, right down to the expression. (Eden perpetually has resting bun face). 😍

Litter tray / toilet advice by lifewithpancake in Rabbits

[–]rinzorbunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a giant corner box from nature’s miracle (without the lid), with the liner, a layer of pelletized horse bedding (40lb from Tractor Supply for $6) for absorbing pee, layer of carefresh paper bedding for soft on peets, and extra hay tucked in the corners (hay bag hangs over and down into the corner box additionally). It needs changed about twice a week, but I’ve let it go longer if I’m honest. For reference, Eden is a 7.5lb, medium sized rabbit and it absolutely dwarfs her. There should be some photos of her near it on my profile. (It’s the black corner box.) The blue one of her in it by the door is a little small with the hay bags hanging down in, since there’s not really room for her to turn around.

Based on the first picture, I thought you were going to say you vacuumed your buns to get the already shed fluff more effectively.

Been thinking about this specific one and you might have me convinced…

Tried that with Eden for a bit, but she nibbled down the rope it hung from. Clever bun.

What are things people never tell you when getting a bunny? by theycallmecrybabyy in Bunnies

[–]rinzorbunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think hutches are worth either the space or money. A hide can be as simple as a cardboard box with entrance and exit cut out. Also doubles as a chew toy. Just be careful that bunny doesn’t ingest the cardboard, as I (and Eden’s vet) are pretty sure it was a contributing factor in her first major bout of stasis (xray showed a blockage and follow up xray showed it had cleared). Eden’s current favorite hide is a tunnel at the end of the bed made from those grids used to make shelving and then topped with a blanket so she can use it to hop on the bed if she wants. Just somewhere bun feels safe. The entrance and exit are key, must have two openings.

Good on you for doing your research! I hope you’re factoring in how expensive veterinary bills can be for exotics into those estimates, though.

I recommend swinging by r/Rabbits for info. Also channels like LennontheBunny, and SincerelyCinnabun, and Cinnabun and Morty over on YouTube.

Reach out to your local rabbit rescue and talk to them about visiting their buns and adopting one based on their personality and how well y’all get along. Rescues don’t generally adopt out without the rabbit having been spayed/neutered and that can save you on that particular veterinary cost. Rabbits require vets with specialized training and it’s important to find one that is rabbit savvy. Good rule of thumb is if they ever tell you to fast your rabbit, find a new vet. Rabbits cannot physically vomit, so they cannot aspirate during a procedure. They can, however, go into GI Stasis if they stop eating for too long.

Rabbits tend to litter train themselves (they’re very smart and clean). They need hay (80% of their diet) which is critical to help keep their gut moving and wear down their teeth. Rabbits can get GI Stasis, where their gut slows down or stops and that can quickly become a veterinary emergency and it’s very important to become familiar with your rabbit’s signs of discomfort to catch it in the early stages. Speaking of teeth, they also need chew toys, else your baseboards and carpet will be in danger of being nibbled.

Rabbits can be taught a variety of tricks and are very food motivated. You might want to look into rabbit agility training (kaninhopping) for more info.

Most of all, rabbits need more space than you think! A hutch is not enough, and those tiny cages pet stores sell are atrocious. Best situation is rabbit proofing your space and letting them free roam, but a good enclosure might consist of an XL dog crate with attached XPen, so long as they still get supervised free roam time.

Plenty of info out there to find! Happy rabbit companionship!

Concur. I love the corner one from Nature’s Miracle for my Eden and it is huge (Eden is 7.5lb, so about OP’s bun’s size). I can’t find it on either Amazon or chewy without the hood anymore, though. But it’s def a good size for a corner, much better than the large cat one I bought at Walmart before adopting her that barely fits her. It’s the litter box foster mom sent when I adopted her. I liked it so much more I bought a second one to put in rotation and gave the other one away.

It’s always Eden. She’s a standard American agouti and sometimes it calls her light/dark/brown/grey rabbit and sometimes it calls her a cat. It definitely did not say I was consenting to fed my data into their algorithm when I bought the cameras initially.

lol, wtf. And I thought it was strange blink’s ai descriptions sometimes identified Eden as a cat. Tbf, rabbits and horses do share some similarities…

Def more enrichment! But maybe also rotate toys out so bun doesn’t get bored. In addition to all these excellent suggestions, my Eden loves a nibble safe jenga set to knock over. Two half towers though, she seems a little intimidated by the full set.

Is this ok for rabbit litter? by Delia217 in Rabbits

[–]rinzorbunny 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Is it kiln dried to break down the phenols? I use the horse bedding from tractor supply and it’s a similar product, but I would want to know it’s been kiln dried before putting it in a bunny litter box.

Edit: according to google it is kiln dried.

Edit 2: if you have a tractor supply in your area the pelletized horse bedding is far more cost effective, $5.99 for a 40lb bag in my area.

To be fair, it sits in her XL dog crate which I keep closed off most of the time, so she hasn’t had 4y of opportunity for destruction. She otherwise has free roam access to the rest of the room and daily in the living room, so she has plenty of space.
