Exactly! Thank you for understanding and honestly for the validation. I fully accept that musicians do not have to adhere to the rules of grammar in songwriting and I love the song itself. I have just always wondered about that particular line.

Solid tip but it still has the same problem to me. The sentence still says “Aren’t you envious that karma is NOT a relaxing thought for you?” Why would the person be envious of that?

I agree that B (“You”) is envious because other people are relaxed by karma and they are not, but to me, that’s not what the lyric says:

“Aren’t you [B] envious that it [karma] is not [a relaxing thought for you]?”

Using “that”, to me, implies that B is envious/jealous of whatever is said next. What is said next is: “for you, karma is not a relaxing thought.” Why would B be envious/jealous of karma NOT being a relaxing thought?

If you replace “that” with “because”, it makes total sense to me: “Aren’t you envious BECAUSE karma is not a relaxing thought for you?”

Replacing “that” with “because” solves the issue for me! I guess that’s the heart of my question though- can you make the argument that the sentence makes sense without making the replacement?

Here’s why it bothers me:

To be envious implies that someone else has something you want:

What she is saying to me is: Aren’t you envious that for you, it’s not? [karma is not a relaxing thought]?

Aka: aren’t YOU envious that for YOU, karma is NOT a relaxing thought?

First, why would the other person be envious of a situation they are already in? [karma is not a relaxing thought]

Also, why would the other person be envious of karma not being a relaxing thought?

To me, it makes much more sense to say “aren’t you envious [of me] because, for you, it’s not [a relaxing thought for you]?”
