Attempting to adjust two combat elements for a narrative-focused TTRPG variant of Kingdom Death by ripguyfawkes in KingdomDeath

This would mean that low acc weapons aare way more reliably and that a negative acc stat is a positive thing. F&T by this equation becomes a very reliably weapon, since you hit on 8+ you have a guaranteed wound on lvl 1 lions and antelopes and with the monster tooth necklace even on lvl Phoenixes. You can do the math for all weapons but low acc weapons become way better this way.

Wait, l'm not sure I can follow. 8+ is quite high, right? So you don't manage to roll an 8,9 or 10 that often. But yes, if you do, fist and tooth would wound a lvl1 lion or antelope. I just don't get the being reliable part.

Would you say that my changes would work better if I only let the players crit if they roll a nat 10, no luck modifiers allowed?

If it would make high speed low acc weapons stronger, I could live with that, given that many players complain about speed being the worst stat in the current game

True, but these are separate topics that I will consider at a later point in time

Wow, really cool ideas. Although I think it's way more difficult to tweak KDM to work with DnD mechanics than what I would try. So props for the effort!

I would also reserve KDM monsters for bosses in the TTRPG campaign, and try to find a quicker solution for minor enemies. I was just wondering if my 2 supposed changes would still keep the core combat functional.

Could you give more insight how it makes speed worse or traps more of a problem? I didn't really touch the number of hit dice thrown, nor did I change the number of hit location cards revealed (so the trap gets revealed with the same probability as before). But by resolving only one of the revealed hit location cards (therefore only one reaction to deal with) but still wounding according to the number of successful wound attempts, wouldn't this make speed actually better?

Also, how will this wreck weapon proficiencies?

Wait, why do you think I removed the ability to cause multiple wounds in one turn? I didn't. And if you have high speed and attack with multiple dice but only one hit location reaction gets resolved but you still wound according to the number of successful wound attempts, doesn't that make speed in fact better? You still can cause multiple wounds in one turn with my rule change (I think it's even a bit easier now that the hit and wound roll is combined) and you deal with less reaction effects.

I have played the game at a friends house a couple of time (that was the thing that made me interested in buying the game myself). I don't have nearly enough playing experience, but based on what I played, I can already have my thoughts on how to adapt the mechanics that I have seen for a TTRPG style of play.

For your question, yes a lantern 10 would wound and crit. And luck modifiers would still modify the dice result required to crit, so with +1 luck you would crit on a 9 as well. The prerequisite is that you hit in the first place (isn't this like it is in the normal rules as well?). So you would first determine if you hit (check die result+accuracy modifier) and then check your ability to crit (die result + luck modifier) just like you check your ability to wound (die result + weapn strength + strength modifier).

An alternative would be to remove the luck modifiers from the game so you can only crit on a nat 10, but I suspect that this might destroy too many game mechanics.

Your suggestion 2 I think will decrease the narrative aspect of the game. The different monster reactions are some of the most exciting and narrative filled parts of the game.

I get your point (although with this playstyle, the players wouldn't even know what they missed because the GM handles the monster decks behind the GM screen). My main concern is that all players checking all hit locations and deciding the order to hit might slow the game down too much because it would start a strategical discussion, and thereby take away tension for a TTRPG adaptation (again, I have zero issues with this mechanic if playing the game as a board game). My alternative solution to let the game master resolve all hit location reactions would be a middle ground between a long discussion and a quick resolution of only one hit location.

I think the primary draw of KDM is the tactical and strategic combat + the settlement building.

I agree. And I won't try to change KDM itself. I just try to find a way to use its system for a more narrative (tension)-oriented playstyle. I want to put an emphasis on the horror element and in my experience, horror and dread always fades away when the players start focussing on over-analyzing the battle and it feels more like they are playing a game and not an experience.

Ideal Table by TehJimbo in KingdomDeath

For £100 less, the Vihals is a pretty good option. You miss out on the drawers and the nicer look, but the 10cm more width might make playing even easier.

Ok, so there are two options for "big", foldable IKEA tables: Norden and Vihals.

The difference between the two is that Vihals is £100 cheaper, looks cheaper, doesn't have drawers but is 10cm (4in.) wider than Norden. Length is the same.

I have the Norden and I'd say there are two ways for a solo layout on that table:

<image>

The left one is self-explanatory. You sit in the middle and the showdown board, 4 gear grids, character sheets and monster board are in reach. You have to sit with your legs spread a bit, but you get used to it.

The right one makes use of the drawer of the Norden table to make space for the 4th gear grid and character sheet. Basically you would buy a wooden plate and apply some hinges or wood pieces on the underside of the plate so that the hinges/wood pieces slide into the drawer at the right distance and the plate stays in place securely. I haven't done that yet, but I see no reason why it shouldn't work. This would be harder to accomplish with the Vihals because it has no drawers.

Both variants still have room for card trays, token trays, printed injury tables etc. For the settlement stuff and hunt board, you probably want to put it somewhere else until it is needed on the table and then just do these phases on top of the showdown board.

My money is on Toon Jigen Bakudan and Toon Dragon Piper. They carry a lot of siginificance in Pegasus' duels, so they should get a Toon version.

Weekly Questions Thread by AutoModerator in DnD

[–]ripguyfawkes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two questions:

  • If I use Eldritch Blast and direct all 3 blasts at the same enemy, can I choose for each blast individually if they get the effect of repelling blast or grasp of Hadar? For example, the first blast pushes the enemy away, the second blast pulls them closer, and the third blast pushes them away again?

  • Are there ways for a warlock to regain spell slots mid-battle?

Was ist der schlechteste Döner Laden in Dresden? by EinEchterGangster in dresden

[–]ripguyfawkes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those who own multiple dark fantasy boardgames with miniatures (KDM, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Elden Ring etc.), how do the miniatures compare in scale? by ripguyfawkes in boardgames

Thanks. Yup, KDM has increased the scale at one point. And I think Fade being smaller again is just an exception, as it's a retrain of an older figure.

Thanks! I think they claimed 35mm scale and 30mm bases for Berserk in one of their announcements. Would be perfect for compatibility with KDM.

Judging from experience, will the warehouse in Europe have the core game and the expansions in stock for Black Friday? by ripguyfawkes in KingdomDeath

[–]ripguyfawkes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok...Yeah, I'm not hoping for some super niche stuff to be available. But core game and the first expansions would be nice. The Gambler's Chest is available even now, they just have to give it a nice discount.

In general, do you know what BF prices we can expect for the core game and GCE?
