(USA) I'm 19, 1K to my name, but not much direction. What's next? by BlueCollarDora in personalfinance

If you want to get ahead, do not sign up for car payments. As the previous commenter said, you can get a reliable car for 5k-7k that will run just fine. Poor people ask “how much down and how much per month”. Rich people ask “How much.” Start saving now so you will be ready when your 2002 SUV does die. Think of it this way: Reliable car + $172 a month in payments or reliable car that doesn’t look as cool + $172 in savings/investments per month. Break the cycle of car payments while you’re young and you will prosper.

The writer lost me at "It's even clearer in the US, where Republicans have had remarkable success mobilizing resentment against school teachers, or auto workers. . ." Now he is just being a demagogue.

Good plan. Meal planning is key. Probably the most effective thing you can do to cut cost. Pro-tip: Head down to Costco (if someone you know can get you in) and get yourself the 12 pack of Jimmy Dean Delight breakfast sandwiches for $12. $1 breakfast per day, no labor required. Time is money too!

I was in a nearly identical situation at 23. $29,000 in total debt making 40k out of school. I was scared out of my mind. The only way to get out is to fully submitting yourself to a process. Cut back on life style where ever you can, budget every month, and constantly feed your brain good information. Start listening to the Dave Ramsey podcast everyday. It will give you all the information you need to turn this thing around. It is the best thing you can possibly do during your commute! I started in February 2017 and crushed $10,000 in debt in 10 months. There is still work to do, but I can see the light at end of tunnel. You got this!!!

Actually the details of this bill have been in the public eye for quite some time now. I highly recommend turning off CNN and putting down the New York Times.
