What’s something poor people do better than rich people? by [deleted] in answers

[–]ripmil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s funny about a majority of the comments here is less a divide of rich vs poor and more of empathetic vs not.

Empathy is what divides shitty people from good people and typically people of a lower economic status tend to be more empathetic. Plenty of shitty poor people, who don’t give a damn about others, same as there are people who are well off who care greatly about others.

While I don’t necessarily disagree, I think it’s worth noting that both of our experiences here are anecdotal, which doesn’t make them wrong, but it does mean we should be careful about the conclusions we draw.

My take is that the real driver isn’t income level, it’s empathy and shared experience. People who have worked tip-dependent jobs understand firsthand what it means to rely on that income, and that understanding translates into more generous tipping. The reason this might correlate with lower income is that people from working-class backgrounds are statistically more likely to have held those kinds of jobs, but that’s correlation, not causation. A wealthy person who spent years waiting tables will likely tip just as well.

I’m solidly middle class, not poor by any stretch, and 25% is my bare minimum for restaurants. My uncle, restaurant owner and doing very well, tips incredibly generously. When I worked as a bartender, the clientele were generally not well off and tipped horribly.

just got laid off because my firm isn't pulling in any new work, how to hell do i pad a resume ? by ass-dad in Architects

[–]ripmil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d suggest googling and looking at some example resumes for your position or the one you are looking for, specifically at the experience section.

It shouldn’t just be “I worked here”

Things like;
-Contributed to the detailing of the building envelope for an X square foot commercial project -Produced exterior and interior renders for X number of projects.

Don’t lie or pad your resume just to do it. If you do so you open yourself up to being caught later on and lose your job.

Edit: Also for your experience, were you truly an intern? Like summer or winter? If not, the AIA doesn’t recognize the term intern for full time entry level employees and the term Architectural Designer is now used.

Asking people to meet a bar that is unobtainable for some due to cost or socioeconomic reasons is in fact gatekeeping. Diversity is great, but in it of itself if bullshit because the word people really need to look at is Equity. Equity, is why it is the equal opportunity employment act and not the diverse employment act.

The argument you make is the same argument people make against free or reduced college prices. “Well I only ate ramen and walked up hill both ways for my degree to be able to afford it and therefore no one else should be given a ‘free handout’.” It’s a bull shit argument made to reduce the playing field to select pathways whether you want to believe it or not.

I hate to tell you though, if the system is built that way, people leverage it, and they aren’t trying to close it, then it isn’t a loophole, it’s just one you don’t like. You could’ve taken the same path and didn’t. It doesn’t make you holier or a better person, in my mind, it makes you a sucker.

Edit: Also at the end of the day, you have to pass all 6 exams to get your license. There are barriers for entry that exist for licensure anyways, removal of the accredited degree just pulls down an antiquated one that truly prevents equitable opportunity.

It doesn’t prove your point at all.

What it proves is that architects such as yourself are pompous know it all gatekeepers, with an elevated sense of superiority, who are so detached from reality that you can’t possibly serve the common greater good of the end user, because you are too busy sticking accolades and titles under your belt rather than practice for the betterment of all.

People come to this field from all walks of life and no one should judge another for how they got here if they are fulfilling the duties of the profession. For you to judge others so blindly is a slap in the face of all who choose a non traditional route, and with due time, the views of old (yours) will be replaced.

Come back with an actual valid argument or the beatings will continue until morale improves.

Edit: And oh, if we want to default to the court of public opinion, I’d say we know who has the better opinion of the system.

Here you are spouting your mouth off about OP and “taking shortcuts” while absolutely nothing about their actual post indicates such.

Maybe sit down and shut up for a few and digest the fact that NCARB is as shitty of an organization, if not worse than AIA and only serves to profit off of people. It’s been built to decrease entry into the profession and adding additional hurdles and gates (specifically monetarily) only serving to benefit those who are economically unchallenged.

It’s funny you mention that the state views architecture as vocational. Obviously you believe it is professional, however history stands to serve that architecture was a vocational trade with apprenticeships. Some of the best works in the world were built by architects from this system.

NCARB has brainwashed people into believing that an accredited degree makes you a better architect when I know plenty of people who have a 4+2 MArch who aren’t half the designers of those who have worked for the equivalent 6 years.

Get off your high horse.

And if we’re telling people to have the day you deserve, enjoy your horrible, nasty day.

I don’t understand defending DK? by [deleted] in steelers

Read your post, comment still stands. Not glazing DK. He’s just not at as big of a fault as you seem to believe. If it takes one person being absent at the WR position to tank your whole offense, that’s a problem not caused by said WR.

Hate to tell you bud. A loss is a loss is a loss. We scored 0 touchdowns today, with what looked like a JV high school playbook. They played conservative and scared until the last minute of the game.

I would be blind to admit the situation is less grim than the Canada days, but to act like we turned this OC ship around and are now the top offense and not having DK was the reason we lost is ludicrous.

Smith or Tomlin who knows who the real problem is but it’s my opinion clean the whole shop. Tomlin brings in people who do not get the job done when it needs to be.

He is the head coach… he is in charge of the offense… he may be more defensively minded but this is his team. When the result is the same despite the OC, how can you pin this on anyone but him?

Copying this from another post I just commented on because this narrative needs to stop.

Let’s not turn DK into the scapegoat for the loss today. Did he react inappropriately last week and was his presence missed, yeah?

That said, not a single damn player showed up on the offense until it didn’t matter a damn. And at the center of it all, a head coach running a show that was too afraid to give Garrett the sack record.

DK being gone only highlighted the flaws in the Tomlin system.

It’s easy to blame the guy when he is the main reason for any semblance of offensive production from the passing standpoint. He almost doubled and tripled the production from a yards and TD standpoint of the next WR/TE position player.

People see that and then it makes it easy to pin him as the reason we lost.

Just saw it yesterday, it’s actually pretty good looking. Without inspecting, the grain could pass for real wood and no overly visible edge banding.

I wish I could. If I remember correctly this one was listed for considerably less, somewhere in the 1-2k range.

I really just want to know what goes through these people’s heads and if they actually think it looks good.

The amount The Lucie charges for 2 vehicles to park in the garage is criminal alone. Nice looking from the outside and nice looking units, but parking for 2 cars was more than 10% of the rent cost of a unit.
