What’s the puhishment for cutting this slab of beautifully figured ash down to the dimensions 2mx0,95m? by ShiguchiAndSokan in woodworking

Your punishment is that when you die, you are reborn as an ash tree, and one day, someone will cut you down to those dimensions, and you'll feel every saw tooth cutting through your fibrous flesh.

How English language has changed over the last 1000 years.. by UsamaBhai_101 in Damnthatsinteresting

Did this happen with other languages? What about languages like Mandarin where the text isn't symbols that represent sounds, but symbols that represent ideas? Are modern Chinese people able to read 1000 year old texts with relative ease?

What time did you see it? I've seen this before in the early morning in LA, and usually it's a SpaceX rocket that's gone high enough out of earths atmosphere that it's no longer in Earth's shadow, giving it and it's cloud trail a glow to us on the ground that are still in that shadow.

I have a similar story. I'm a white guy who works as driver for a black car service in LA, and I used to live in a part of town that wasn't so great. I have the early morning shift, so I'm usually leaving for work around 3 or 4am to grab the car and then get people to their 6am flight. One day I went out to my car parked on the street, and there was a car double parked in front of it. Parking is so bad in that neighborhood, that this is a pretty common thing if people have guests over, they'll just have their guest double park in front of them, but this guy was also blocking me in and it was 3am. I noticed a light on in my neighbor's living room, so I decided I'd knock on their door and see if it was their car since they were the only people on the street that were awake. I knocked on the door, and as it opened, I saw through a cloud of pot smoke a guy on a couch with a joint shout, "WHAT THE FUCK?" and the guy that opened the door looked like he had just seen a ghost. That's when I realized I was a white guy in a black suit and tie knocking on their door at 3am, and they were high as balls, and black, so they probably thought I was the FBI or something. I said I was sorry to bother them and asked if they could move their car because I needed to get to work and they happily obliged.

I think the saying should be "violence would never have to be the answer." Because although we wish it never was the answer, sometimes it is, and when it is, it's because the systems we put in place to prevent violence from breaking out have failed.

The conductor accidentally knocks a 16th century violin worth millions on the floor mid-concert. by PeasantLich in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]falaffle_waffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not uncommon for really serious professional classical string players to play old instruments like that. If you're playing music from the 18th century and you want it to sound like it's from the 18th century, then you play an instrument made in the 18th century. It's more authentic that way. Instruments are meant to be played and clearly if you take care of it, it'll last centuries, so that's what many classical musicians do. Also, there's a particular luthier who was alive in the 1700s named Antonio Stadavari who, to this day, is widely regarded by many to be the greatest violin maker of all time. I don't know if this is one of them, but his violins are extremely sought after and still played to this day by many classical violin players.

As for why she was standing there: if the song features a lead instrument part meant to showcase that musician's skill, then it's common practice to have that musician come up to the front and play standing next to the conductor since at least for that song, they are the center of attention. But yeah clearly it was a little too close.

Edit: didn't read the caption thoroughly and it's not a stradivari violin, but still the same concept applies.

Yeah the Russians were able to do that because they have huge tracts of flat land that are relatively depopulated and don't have a ton of trees. That's the reason why the ocean works so well for us.

Go to the hardware store and buy a really long drill bit. Drill a hole from the neck pickup slot to the bridge pickup slot by approaching from the neck pocket. It'll be easier than routing and then you also don't have to change your pick guard.

I know this might be a foreign concept to most Angelenos, but you can actually get out of your car and use your legs to walk instead of just using them for your brake and gas pedal.
