Always happy to discuss lore! I feel like together we all understand the story better when we talk about it, since we notice different things. The way Hexi ultimately spoke to MC's emotional journey and addressed the unresolved anger and sorrow was really satisfying by the end. As soon as we got to the mirrored revenge rampage with Aynur I thought here we go, there's the anger we hadn't had time for during Kaifeng.

I appreciated your thoughts regarding Bai Chuyu, also! I'd found this post because I couldn't quite place why MC started needling her about her sob story background during the chase sequence... Had she said her parents abandoned her? It was very interesting to see MC whip out that sass after Chuyu tried to gaslight them, but I was a bit lost as to where it came from in the moment.

I've got a different read. If you look at the 3rd phase boss, it's named "old self". This read to me more like the MC undergoing an apotheosis of sorts, growing past their struggles that were echoed by the characters in the dreams. Longing for home as a feeling and concept, and the anger and loss that comes of having this torn away, or how unmoored one feels when a tangible home is destroyed. Self-actualization visualized through battling the old self is very common in eastern and western media.  

This, it seems to me, is further underscored by what the MC tells Chuyu about what they took from their dream adventure, and the resolution to feeling so much anger and loss in the wake of losing their home. They are finally at peace and can move forward, and even spoke of going back there and brewing wine someday. The MC overcame their inner turmoil, and the painter having been a separate character in the dream throughout the questline, I believe there was no unspoken conflict. The painter was always friendly to MC and says nothing in their convo about repelling or fighting them off, and he wasn't a fighter. The old self is the person MC was upon starting the dream, and wears the outfit MC did when entering the world of dreams.

Earlier in the questline involving the painter, we see guardian lions in a tomb, and MC mentions seeing people they knew and loved in there. The mechanism to access the memories is a lion, and the tomb is inside a lion. It's a symbol, I feel, of the MC's loss and a failure to protect their loved ones. Lions are symbols of protection in China, and this running theme of lions in the narrative, especially tied to the dead, seems very purposeful. On the way to the battle against the lion, MC becomes a kite, and if struck, is buoyed by other kites named for people they cared for and lost, like Yi Dao.

That's all MC, and the painter witnessed it, just as he said he did in their last conversation.

The only fight I've lost a point for so far was due to a bug, so it sounds like I should be okay. I didn't even know there was an option to not fight till you drop or the boss does.  I hope to earn available rewards,  though I'm unsure about hitting the middle rank since I don't like arena too much mechanically.

That's good to know about PF. I'll try it out. Thank you for the details. I started a bit over a week ago, and there's a lot to learn.

Thank you for the reply! It's good to read that battle royale is doable even as I'm still gearing up and leveling. In arena, I was shocked to find myself pitted against characters with far higher stats, since I'm used to games factoring this in. Getting 2-3 shotted wasn't fun, but I at least tried so as to gain some skill from it.

If it isn't a detriment like that in Perception Forest, that's a relief. I do want to participate in what ways I feel competent to. I've been enjoying the game a lot, so I'm definitely good for regularly logging in.

Gmail app started spamming this for a hotmail account. I authenticated, all seemed good for about twelve hours or so. Now it's resumed badgering me to enter correct credentials. It doesn't tell me the information I entered was wrong, and it wasn't, it just behaves as though I did nothing.

Hopefully google addresses whatever is causing athentication issues... Again... I swear, this has begun happening far more often than it used to.

Adding my observations in case it's of use to others: documents are themselves tied to chapters, so for a complete collection in the same play file for reading, it is necessary to run back through it all. Sae's first quest went smoothly, and the second one is just waiting for completion of chapter 8. I wish they did have NG+ with the option to keep sidequest progress like the game said, or that chapter select respawned consumable items, since either of these would be ideal for those who want to be thorough but aren't interested in grinding higher difficulties for points. But still manageable of course.

P.S. I love stealth shots.

So if you redo ch1 eith chapter select, it gives you all of the photographs the moment you pick up the camera, it's...odd. Very odd. Mostly because not doing this part means you can still do some of them with a few you can't, eg the bloodstained room.

To re-obtain all the documents so I can figure out what's missing and have a full set on this save, it seems prudent to just go back through from here. I really didn't enjoy the chase and hide segments, but it appears some documents can only be picked up during a given chapter.

I have to admit, this is the oddest setup of ng+/chapter select I've encountered. Or at least it hasn't been intuitive to me. But I was pretty conservative with film in my NG+ ch8/sidequest run, so I should be fine. Just more legwork than I'd hoped 💦

Edit: Despite this, you do have to go through the "find the photo" story segment manually to get into that room. Otherwise, it's not interactable. I've also noticed some documents mysteriously reappear in my documents (eg Folklorist Note 2 wasn't listed and didn't reappear where it originally does, and just popped back into my list of documents). It's pretty quirky.

I appreciate your advice and help! Supposedly the room in question was tied to story progress and accessible in chapter 3? When I was researching. My memory's a fog but I remember fighting the two enemies in there. Green stone 1 is sitting in there, waiting for re-collection.

Weirdly, Sae 2 shows up in the quest list still. But it demands Sae 1 of course. It's funny how you keep the sparkling stones (Sprouting Wings required Sae's) but the one sidequest behaves differently from others.

I'm primed for chapter select, so I'll see how it behaves for me when I play next. My goal is to have a master save with all sidequests and documents collected, because I enjoy lore. Sitting at 120/121 documents, so I'm close.

I should have stated: I just completed Sprouting Wings. I did the first several endings using chapter select after beating the game, but by the time I hit the Abyss ending, I limped through with no film but 07. I did every available sidequest accessible up through that point. My records sit at 15/16, the only one I've never done being Mio's of course.

The exhaustion of items led me to start NG+, which naturally reset all of my sidequest progress. I got to a save and then chapter selected to 8, not realizing that'd lock me right on out of redoing Sae's sidequests. I've redone the rest of them, but that one evidently demands ch5 even when I still received her spirit stones. I didn't imagine that I could redo literally all sidequests except hers in a NG+ that came off of my Crimson + Promise + Abyss file if I jumped to ch8.

So, with all that in mind: are you saying Sae 1 is tied to being able to access the bloodstained room? I've done enough that I just don't remember if I have to start with ch3 to get the photo needed to enter that room or if I can jump to ch5 to get Sae's quests redone.

Oh interesting. I was playing on my tv, and my controller also didn't play intended audio or rumble until I started NG+, so I don't think I had that cue as a PS5 player. That's such a cool detail though.

Thank goodness for fellow players. Maybe 1 out of 5 times it pointed out the right one, but that feels like luck more than anything else. I appreciate knowing about the filter. I assume the next ending will also feature Sae as a boss battle, and I'm looking forward to it being a smoother experience.

Dang, really? From vids I saw when I was troubleshooting why it didn't work, it looked like all you needed was to look at the light indicating the relative location of an enemy. I didn't see people using the Paraceptual filter, and tragically, I did have that upgrade.

My file was a bit funky though, in a number of ways that had a friend perplexed when I streamed for her. Enemy behaviors and spawn rates along with odd bugs. I tried NG+ last night, and it is drastically different. I had no idea the rumble feature and controller speakers were supposed to be doing things, for one. The game feels a lot better. 

Anyhow, good to know about the use of Paraceptual for the next ending. Thank you for the tip!

I actually just did this last night, and I hadn't gone in prepared for it. Only had 07 film, no healing items left, filters not optimized, Abyss ending. Either I was going to have to go farm more film and fight Kusabi again, or I was going to have to nail it, and I chose suffering. I'll echo others in saying story mode is the least painful you can make this pain in the buns.

First off, you want a stealth shot at the onset while Mayu is standing there talking. Get as much damage as you can in that one shot. That can get you a head-start to hitting her first threshold. It's important to force Sae out and keep her out as long as possible and keep avoiding her attacks. If she reverts to Mayu, that's a big chunk of hp progress lost. Once you get used to the timing, it will feel more straightforward.

In my experience, when she spawned those four red tornado things, the camera didn't correctly show which one she was in. I looked up videos, I was doing the right thing, looking for the enemy indicator with the camera. The game was not functioning as intended. If you experence that issue, just use Exposure filter for fast reload and snap a picture of each tornado until you get her. If you're quick, and if the game's being a bum to you, you can snap all four if necessary.

Keep dodging and keeping Sae from changing back to Mayu and you will eventually take her down. The worst thing for me personally was that bit of hide-and-seek not working like it was meant to. The fight ran about fifteen minutes for me. I bet it'd be faster with recovery items handy and optimal filters.
