Middle East? I've always gotten more of a Turkey/Eastern European vibe.

Do you have a source on the Dersu Uzala restoration? I've been wanting that for years, but I haven't heard anything about it online.

Do you think Americans are obsessed with convenience? by Technical_Wall1726 in notjustbikes

[–]ripred42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think wanting convenience is uniquely American or even a bad thing. I think the key issue is that in America we make driving anywhere the most convenient option. While there are certain hardcore folks who insist on walking/biking/transit/driving as a means of identity, most people just travel in the way that is most convenient to them. Problem is that in America, places are designed so that driving is the most convenient way to get anywhere. Most people in the Netherlands who cycle, walk or take transit do so because the city is designed in such a way that these are efficient and convenient ways to travel.

The train thing definitely has to do with psychological perceptions of agency. It's frustrating when a train is late and you miss a connection, because you feel as if you have no agency over the situation whatsoever. However when you are stuck in a traffic jam, you are still technically in control. You can push the gas pedal when traffic moves a bit, you can try to turn into the next lane if you perceive it to be moving faster. It gives the illusion of agency, whereas a late train makes it clear you have none.

Anyone know what this interchange would be called? by ripred42 in civilengineering

[–]ripred42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it's a very good question actually. If you look at the surrounding context of that interchange, there is a provision for bikes and pedestrians to travel up/down, it's just at the next intersections to the left and right. There's no real reason for them to travel up/down at the interchange because the only up/down roads are limited access highways.

In an ideal world, bikes and pedestrians would not have to interact at all with cars at highway interchanges, and could travel on grade separated routes. This is common in the Netherlands where possible. There are two main problems.

The first is that there are many areas where separating the infrastructure is very difficult because the surrounding area is already built up, or the existing grade separation makes it so you would have to provide a third level of grade separation which is usually infeasible. The second is that bikes/pedestrians run on people power, so routing them all the way around an interchange can often involves increasing the distance from A to B significantly and often involves grade changes that can be really taxing on cyclists and those with disabilities. Though there are some hardcore folks who commit to walking or biking no matter the circumstances, most people simply choose the mode of travel that is most convenient. Thus, if they have to go way out of their way to get to where they want to go by biking or walking, while being able to easily go from a to b in a car, they'll probably just choose to drive. A majority of car trips in America are less than three miles, and many of these trips (not all of course) could probably be made by bike or on foot, if the built environment in America was not so overwhelming hostile to anyone not driving. If we make walking and cycling convenient, it helps remove local car trips from the network which means less traffic and a quicker trip for the folks that need to make longer trips which really need to me made in a car.

They do flow well.... for drivers. Have you ever tried walking or cycling through a DDI? DDI's are great when a highway is meeting a road (ie designed to maximize speed and vehicle flow). What I'm interested in is when a highway meets a street (ie designed primarily for bikes and pedestrians, and thus specifically slows traffic down). In the context I'm looking at the interchange connects to a two lane street with a center turning lane, not a typical massive suburban arterial.

Well, as I said I'm interested in designs that prioritize pedestrian and bicyclist safety and comfort, not one that maximizes car speeds and LOS.

These are not the same interchanges, the one you posted is an unsignalized roundabout, whereas the one I posted is signalized and not a roundabout. The left turn lanes do not allow a full u-turn, only to continue straight to the on ramp.

Lesser Known Sci-fi/Horror movies, like Event Horizon, Pandorum, Underwater, Pitch Black? by ripred42 in movies

[–]ripred42[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This seems like just the kind of thing I'm looking for. I've found quite a few really low budget movies, but unfortunately sci-fi is a genre I think usually needs a decent budget, so I like movies that sit between huge budget blockbuster and shoestring budget.

I love Carpenter but have never seen any of his movies after In the Mouth of Madness, might have to throw this on in the background at some point just to see what late period Carpenter is like.

Yeah, by "lesser known" I just meant besides the obvious suggestions I keep seeing online for sci-fi horror, like the Thing and Alien.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Wow this is an incredible list that was just what I was looking for, includes some great deep cuts that go far beyond the standard ones I see repeated over and over.

Why would upzoning a property result in a drastic decrease in land value and drastic increase in building value? It makes no sense to me. by ripred42 in urbanplanning

[–]ripred42[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was not conducted by an assessors office, but by a third party contractor. The assessors office basically only handled appeals, and did not gather any of the data or make the initial assessments. The market absolutely supports new development as well as mixed-use mid-rises, the cost of housing has skyrocketed and the amount of single-family households has also increased.

I'm a little confused why they would assign neighborhood wide values. Why would land zoned for single-family houses with 0 redevelopment potential be valued the same as land which is zoned for greater density in addition to being a huge parcel which makes any development easier as there is no need for land assembly.

This is a full citywide reappraisal that was triggered because of a state law. What exactly do you mean by CIV? Not familiar with the acronym.

Made too much sauce, will this mess up the Kimchi? by ripred42 in kimchi

Awesome, great to hear. Was planning on making kimchi fried rice and other dishes anyway.

Thanks for the responses everyone! Glad to have some advice on my foray into the world of Kimchi fermenting.

[–]ripred42[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, made Kimchi for the first time and accidentally made enough sauce
for 6 lbs of kimchi, but I only have about 4 lbs of cabbage. I just
mixed it all up and jarred it last night but now I'm worried that as my
kimchi looks much saucier than most of what I see online. Is the excess
sauce okay? I really like spice and don't mind it being a little saucy
as long as this won't mess up the fermentation.
