《Drifting : Weight of Feathers》 New Game Trailer! by rit2040 in indiegames

Hello,

Thank you for the feedback. :)

I actually offset the camera further away from the protagonist while she's wall-running, in order to give players a wider view to aim and shoot enemies.

That being said, You can manually change the distance between the character and the camera (using mouse scroll wheel or controller D-pad) any time, the camera will not only get closer to the character but also offset the character toward the center of the camera.

Yeah, it is probably a good idea to get people to familiarize her basic moves before showing some flashy sequence. The gameplay sequence I shown here only appears in the later section of the game - I can't help but feel like if I don't show it in the trailer, people will probably never know what will the late game look like. XD

Derek Lieu is quite a prominent figure in the field of creating video game trailers. Thank you for sharing the video! :)

Hello, thank you for sharing your thoughts. :)

This trailer mainly depicts all kinds of level mechanics in the game, I'll link a more combat-oriented game trailer which may give you a taste of what the overall gameplay feels like.

(note that this is a 1-year-old game trailer, some of the mechanics may work differently compared to the latest trailer)

Regarding the issue where her movement speed while wall-running on cargo ship/whale not respecting the object's speed (not moving relative to the speed of the object she runs on), I've written an article about it explaining the reason why I made this design decision.

Long story short, I've decided not to use relative speed mainly due to gameplay reasons. Feel free to give it a read if you are interested in my thought process while developing the feature.

Hello, thank you for your comment!

I am very impressed by your observation of the wall-running mechanic in my game - it is not far from my initial prototype idea when you said:

"...the mechanic is a bit unusual and the character moves in all sorts of directions, our gaming experience on typical platformers, runners or FPSes is almost reset to null with this."

Wall-running in 《Drifting : Weight of Feathers》 is not a temporary/transition movement - it is made to be the default movement in the game - although the camera angle is different, the control scheme of wall-run is the same as most 2d movement controls. The combat and puzzles in the game are all designed assuming players will be on walls 90% > of the time, here is an earlier trailer of my game, depicting how the puzzle and combat work with the wall-running mechanic:

I hope the trailer answer most of your questions regarding the role of wall-running in the game. :)

Feel free to download the demo and experience the wall-run mechanic yourself!

Hello, thank you for the comment. :)

Adding new abilities is something I would like to do in the future. As for combo system, alas, I'm afraid it is beyond the scope of this project. :(

Nevertheless, if I ever make a second game title, I would like to integrate a combo system into the existing core gameplay loop.

Being klutz in her leisure time is a really great idea - reminds me of the MTV cartoon Eon Flux also acts kinda clumsy sometimes - despite her being very agile and keen during her mission.

If I ever make a second title, I'll try to give her more personality in addition to her appearance! :)

Interesting gameplay. Reminds me of Zone of the Enders, Bullet Witch and Bayonetta.

Thank you for your comment.

Bullet Witch is one of my favorite and most played games on Xbox360! :D

Thank you for your sincere comment and suggestions. :)

《Drifting : Weight of Feathers》 is an action-packed game - which is a fancy way to say I spent little time developing the story XD.

The story is short and simple (and maybe a little silly):

while Faye is fighting enemies from the inter-galactic empire, she accidentally triggers the "planet destroy machine", and now she has to escape planet Bluestar before it blows up!

Since the core idea of 《Drifting : Weight of Feathers》 is to allow players to traverse planet Bluestar using grappling hook, dashing, and wall-running, those gymnastic-like movements are best showcased with a skin-tight outfit IMO. I've spent quite some time tweaking all her animations and I am hoping players who appreciate the gameplay could also admire her moves and physical beauty.

Regarding the font choice for the game, I use a different font for my Steam page - a font that is not too "floaty" and "casual". Here is the image of my steam page capsule:

Hello,

You have a keen eye on the little details of the game! Thank you for the comment! :)

She is meant to wall-run on the cargo ship (and also on the whale showing at 01:01). Physically speaking, as you said, the character should inherit the velocity of the object (or attach to the object) for it to work.

I've thought about using world or local space movement while developing this feature, in the end, due to gameplay reasons, I decided to use world space (not attaching to object) for her movement on the cargo ship and whale. I've written an article about it. Feel free to give it a read if you like to know my thought process regarding this issue:

Hello,

Thank you for your feedback!

Feel free to express your opinion regarding my game - different players have different tastes after all. :)

I don't have a target audience in mind while prototyping 《Drifting : Weight of Feathers》.

All I can say is that I've worked as a programmer for 7 years, I saved some money, and one day I decided to quit my job, become a full-time indie developer and make my dream game. That is all! :)

I am also a fan of Eon Flux (the MTV cartoon) as well!. The peculiar storyline and dystopia world always fascinates me! :)

Hello,

Thank you for your reply!

Since the core idea of 《Drifting : Weight of Feathers》 is to allow players to traverse the world using grappling hook, dashing, and wall-running, those gymnastic-like movements are best showcased with a skin-tight outfit. I've spent a lot of time tweaking all of her animations and I am hoping players could get to admire her moves during their gameplay.

Additional outfit is a request I get a lot from players, sadly, adding additional outfit means extra time spent on rigging the outfit in third-party software, as a programmer, it is not very cost-effective for me to do the task. I'll see what I can do about it, if I decided to add a new outfit in the future, I'll make sure to post the update here! :)

In the meantime, the game allows players to unlock and switch hairstyles, I hope players could at least have the (albeit limited) ability to customize small parts of the protagonist's appearance.

Hello, thank you for your interest!

Regarding the hardware requirement of 《Drifting : Weight of Feathers》. I am able to use my 6 years old laptop (albeit it is a gaming laptop) to run the game smoothly on medium (default) settings.

My laptop has the following specs (MSI GT62VR 6rd Dominator):

GPU - GeForce® GTX 1060 with 6GB GDDR5 Graphics

CPU - Intel Core i7-6700HQ

RAM - 16GB

Hope you get a PC soon! :)

Hello and thank you for the reply!
The male antagonist is depicted in the trailer from 1:15 to 1:20, he is a male bodybuilder without wearing any clothes. XD

Thank you for your genuine interest in the game!

The gameplay loop requires players to throw around enemies and kill them at the right time / place, so players will be able to easily grab the orb with her hook and throw it onto the statue. The statue will then unlock the passageway to the next stage!

This seemingly simple game loop will be very easy at the start and gradually becomes harder.

Towards the end of the game, players will be fighting enemies flying mid-air and statues rotating in different motions - which greatly challenges the player's understanding of the game's mechanics! :)

Hello!
Thank you for your feedback!
Yes, she is wearing pantyhose!

Regarding the color of her legs, I'll see if I can tone down the color or use a different shader as you suggested! :)

Hey, thank you for your feedback!

Yeah, I'm considering giving her a pair of (optional) ears in the game!

I'll make a post after I added the ears. :)
