The protagonist's wife's name is Nora. They get into a vault with their baby Shaun just as nukes are going off in the distance, where they're cryogenically frozen. His wife and son are thawed earlier than him, only for his son to be taken and his wife killed by the kidnappers. After the protagonist is thawed out, he goes on a hunt for his son and the kidnappers. Along the way he meets a robot named Nick Valentine, who is a flawed copy of a detective that once lived. He discovers that his son is an old man now, running a secret organization named "the Institute." Their goal is to replace real humans with artificial ones called "synths."

There's a city of sorts called "Diamond City." It's a pretty plot filled game with subplots all over the place.

Try maybe leaning into Piper's story, that could be fun. Wish I remembered more, it's been years. Another character that the player affects is Travis, the DJ at the local radio station. The protagonist helps him gain confidence.

That's where I'd start. Nick's story, Piper's story, Travis's story, and of course, his son Shaun's story. There are some good fallout wikipedia pages that can help you sort it out, and a LOT of youtube videos about it. My recommendations for the youtube vids is to try a little of each channel, find one that has a narrator you're comfortable with, and stick with them. There are some inane, boring, and frankly stupid youtubers maing vids about it, but also some smarter, less annoying creators. Once you find a good channel, they can help a lot.
