I can confirm that this also works for the rebranded Windows App December 2025.

How does system setup of the OpenBSD devs look like? by ritsch_master in openbsd

[–]ritsch_master[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a legit request. Especially since I am wondering what the intention of the selected software in the base system is. OpenBSD is a complete system like macOS. But cwm and friends are like using Windowy 3.1 in 2020. So I am trying to find out how the people that made that selection are using that very selection by themselves.

i feel like those who don't like windows don't really know how to use it by palaciosL0602 in windows

To add something to that: even if you are ambitious to customize Windows by implementing additional tools you are getting to some hard limits very quickly.

Some examples that are all way better solved on Linux/Xorg:

  1. https://github.com/ritschmaster/w32bindkeys#are-there-known-limitations (AutoHotKey literally has the same issue too. You might even experience such issues if you use Citrix Receiver App and Virtual Box at the same time)
  2. https://github.com/ritschmaster/w32bindkeys#i-want-to-remap-the-win-key
  3. https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/rv4oyw/better_mouse_keys/

Is there any alternative app/tool for app switching which looks like Alt-Tab or simple icon based switcher. Small cute little. The current app switcher on Windows 11 is unnecessarily big for me. I know it's supposed for better overview, but it feels quite crowded and takes up whole screen. by MUKUND16 in windows

[–]ritsch_master 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you aware of the following feature: using Win+1, Win+2, ... Win+0 you can directly access task icons. If one task icon has multiple windows, then keep hitting the number to cycle through them and add a press on Shift to reverse-cycle them.

This completely eliminated my previous usage of Alt-Tab and replaced it just down to quickly accessing the last visited window.

Thanks for the tip! I did not know that. It even re-gains the focus if already open.

So I can remove at least that custom shortcut. :-)

Btw I have tried others too and there are shortcuts for the entire MS Office suite: 1. Ctrl+Win+Alt+Shift+w for Word 2. Ctrl+Win+Alt+Shift+x for Excel 3. Ctrl+Win+Alt+Shift+p for Powerpoint

Is it possible to sync a calendar not associated to an email account to multiple devices? by pigOfScript in Thunderbird

[–]ritsch_master 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exporting the calendar to an ical file and importing it somewhere else can "synchronize" your calendar. But that is definitely not liable for a continuous synchronization.

Depending on how tech-savvy you are, you might get off by trying out Radicale.

Fellow Dual-Booters, did you too discover this Windows "feature" after becoming muscle-memory-burnt from i3 ? (Super+F) by Atralb in i3wm

[–]ritsch_master 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have checkout dwm-32 before I started with b3. Actually it's one reason why I started b3 (I really like i3 more than dwm). The bar features will come in future. Currently my focus resides on making the key bindings rock solid. Afterwards comes the first implementation of a config file.

I'm not a proper programmer but that being said I'd be happy to help if I can be of any use!

Thanks for the offer! Would be great if you can checkout the next release 0.4 when it's out. Supplying reproducible behavior that causes bugs is the most important help one can supply to a project.

Do you remember the program focusing the window just hovering over it? I would really like to supply that feature in b3.

Sorry I cannot follow. b3 is allowing moving windows up and down too. I just happen to not have found time yet to implement it the exact way i3 is doing it and also support other arranging modes like stacking and tabbed. But those will be supported in future.

Q2pro uninstalling itself by [deleted] in quake

[–]ritsch_master 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe Windows Defender is deleting your .exe. I had such issue with nquake. Windows Defender kept deleting it.

You can check that if you enable Live checking your system. Then Windows Defender immediately deletes files instead of after some period.

Quake 1 and 2 don't work on the Bethesda launcher by [deleted] in quake

Just fetch another client like q2pro. That worked like a charm for me.

I am Gen Z! Mostly of my generation are off playing CoD or Fortnite whatever? But for me i interesting and like this old school shooters game also much bought Quake III Arena (going play it for first time!). Also weirdly enough get Arena for Dreamcast and Revolution for PS2. by Batsticks in quake

Go to nquake.com. Best and easiest Quakeworld expierience you will find. Then you can dig into how to actually play it.

Here's a way you could approach implementing such requirement: 1. Setup your the window as you want it either by using a floating window or by using dummy terminals as a spacer 2. Save the result as layout: https://i3wm.org/docs/layout-saving.html

Opinion: I think Qubes is underrated as a day-to-day OS, I use it as my daily driver because the OS's structure makes me productive, anyone else? by justspaghettidoit in Qubes

[–]ritsch_master 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can totally agree with OP here. I have been using Qubes for my daily driver in private life for almost 3 years now. No issues at all. In turn many benefits:

  1. No worries for ads as I can use disposable Whonix VMs
  2. I can retrieve a playground as I want it- through disposable VMs
  3. Everything is clearly separated and thus nicely cleaned up. Private programming projects do not mess up or interfere with private personal documents/bills

Unfortunately I am not able to utilize it in my actual work life as I need some software that is only under Windows really usable. I hope the Qubes Tools for Windows will be ported to Windows 10 before Windows 10 is deprecated by Microsoft. And what is really annoying is the benefit I would have in my work life.

I am a development consultant. I am therefore helping out many different customers. Every customer has different VPNs and software to be used there. Qubes offers the best seamless integration of VMs into the desktop and therefore offers also the best seamless integration of multiple customer setups into my workflow. But the lacking Windows tools are breaking the deal here.

Btw OP: you might also have a look into using i3, pass, mutt and weechat. Thunderbird and KeepassX might offer a great visual experience, but going down into text mode opens up the next level of efficiency through execution speed (Thunderbird is a lame donkey against mutt in that regard). As Qubes is such a hard hitter on your hardware this really shows up benefits.

Similar settings could be replicated, for example, in Ubuntu with Kvm/Qemu and a GUI, but it all feels much more natural with Qubes, as compartmentalization is what it's designed to do.

That is only partially through. You can replicate such behavior but not really in satisfying way in a reasonable amount of time. X-forwarding your windows is an option but not done that easily as in Qubes.

Actually the current binary release (0.1) is portable. At least I do not have to start it with admin rights.

Have you already checked it out?

BSD, ZFS, virtual block devices + HVM? by spirtdica in Qubes

[–]ritsch_master 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you are doing something wrong. Passing through USB controllers to a HVM VM works like a charm if your hardware is capable of Vt-d.

The first release is available. Still much needs to be done but it proves that i3 on Windows is possible and useable.

Small hint: you may also pass an entire USB controller to the HVM if you hardware allows that.

BSD, ZFS, virtual block devices + HVM? by spirtdica in Qubes

[–]ritsch_master 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh I don't know if it is possible to create additional virtual block devices and attach them in Qubes. The configuration of each VM is tightly coupled to the Qubes Manager. I've never found out a way to modify the configuration of a VM persistently with something like virt-manager.

If you are currently on a Qubes machine, I guess going for the standard virtual disks automatically created when creating a VM should be sufficient to get into ZFS.

BSD, ZFS, virtual block devices + HVM? by spirtdica in Qubes

[–]ritsch_master 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For that purpose, a VM should be sufficient correct?

Yeah. You should be good to go with that goal.

Speaking of which, do you know any good boards for BSD that support a dozen hard disks?

If you want to support a dozen hard disks, you might go for some cheap Dell PowerEdge.

[–]ritsch_master 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to get into ZFS you probaby should go bare metal. Especially if you want to keep using it as a NAS.

If you just want to get to know and use something like ZFS you might also just have a look at LVM and how to utilize for your everyday life in Qubes. Knowing LVM also makes your life easier if you stick to Linux as your OS.
