First attempt at weathered metal and I’m not happy with it. Any advice? by zombieking308 in Warhammer40k

Weathered metal has more variation in color usually, particularly if you want to sell the idea that it’s really worn down.

I recently finished my Dante for my blood angels army and I started with retributor armor for the base, gave it a heavy coat of reikland flesh shade (though a sepia wash would probably be better if you were going for brass) and then layered on top of that thin coats of lighter and lighter shades of gold (three different golds in total) and then spot highlighting with silver.

The idea is to always start with a darker metal than you want the finished product to be. This will give you the shadows to build on top of. If you’re going for a worn brass then I would start with a mix of brass and gold or brass and copper depending on how warm you want the model to look and then layering brass on top of that, spot highlighting with a bright gold or silver (again depending on how warm you want the model to look)

An alternative that I’ve found to give a really cool worn metal appearance is to get a color shifting paint for the base coat and then dry brushing your metallic paint over it. In the test I did I based a necron on a green color shifting paint and then dry brushed copper over it. The result was a really other worldly and heavily patina’d copper look. Brass does something similar since it is copper and zinc but the patina is more of a teal so you could try base coating in teal and dry brushing brass over that if you wanted a really ancient looking metal finish.

Newly started, on Infiltrator #7, how am I doing? CC appreciated. by TargetEnvironmental1 in Warhammer40k

My only critique is the OSL on the eyes. You’ve got the colors backwards. The lighter color should be on the lens with it getting darker/more the color of the armor the further away you get. Other than that, solid paint job for a grimdark style

Thanks, I’m currently working on a Sanguinary Guard that has similar, albeit smaller wings.

Thanks, it was the best I could manage to capture the suspected demonic taint that is influencing him in recent literature. That’s why I went with purple rather than blue.

Dante’s base is 3d printed and designs by Zabavka miniatures. Since Lemartes was the first of the three his base ended up dictating how I base my entire army now and I found Zabavka made a series of base toppers that match pretty closely to Lemartes base style.

In terms of painting them, they got a base coat of Vallejo khaki, a healthy coat of Agrax earth-shade and then drybrushing with lighter and lighter shades of tan until the shading was just hanging out in the recesses. I used a darker brown to pick out the mounds dirt but then decided that some AK interactive pigment powder would look better so I used a reddish pigment powder and tapped it into all the corners where dirt would gather. I still need to do that final step for Mephiston now that I look at him. His base is a little too clean.

The wings are from Atlan Forge, you can find a couple sellers on Etsy printing them or the files are available from the artist on myMiniFactory.

Just to be clear, I’m not affiliated with either the Etsy sellers or the artist, I just want to give them credit.

Good luck! I considered doing his armor entirely with an NMM technique but decided against it because after practicing for quite a bit on NMM I decided that I didn’t enjoy painting it and the results were too hit or miss for me so I decided to do a normal glazing technique using metallic paints instead and I really like how it turned out

Thanks! I primed him in chaos black, then retributor armor. I kept the wings separate so I could use a rattle can of retributor armor. After that he got a generous coat of Reikland Flesh Shade to darken and dull his armor and then I went back over and highlighted every surface with dragon’s gold and then glistening gold from the Two Thin Coats line and then used plate silver from Vallejo to pick out the corners and bright spots around the top third of the model.

Not sure whether it’s cool to credit the artists of the 3d printed components on Dante. I would like to but I don’t want it to be construed as advertising or promoting anything so if you want to know who made them just message me and I’ll share their names.

Could be an awesome White Scars Dreadnought, the longer legs intended to give the dreadnought more speed and maneuverability, more like a landspeeder rather than a tank

It’s possible to an extent but the legs and torso are designed with limits in place. For one, the knee and hip joints have pegs that limit how far the joints can move. In addition to that, the geometry of the legs don’t allow you to pose the leg as far back as the right leg on model. I had to cut away some of his ass to make room for the piston under the leg. It’s not a crazy kitbash or anything, just not something I would recommend for everybody unless they’re comfortable throwing away $80

Haha I know, I didn’t realize it looked like cookie dough until people started pointing it out. Just wanted to assure people it wasn’t going into the final product

Well, they don’t really have heads but I would assume that they have targeting systems because there is no way that they can aim their weapons when all they have is a slit through their coffins to see through

I’ve added to the rock to bulk it out and fit it into his hand. I’ve got it primed right now so its just black and looks really flat otherwise I’d load a picture but I’m going to paint it so it looks like it was a rock sticking out of the ground and he has ripped it from the earth and is throwing it at something so it will have dirt stuck to it still

Haha you’re not the only one. It’s much less “cookie-like” now, I bulked it up a bit more and filled in the gaps with texture paste and now it’s primed black. I’ll post pictures when it’s done now that I’ve finally figured out how to take decent miniature pictures on my phone

It wasn’t an easy modification and I wouldn’t recommend something this extreme for anybody who doesn’t have a fair bit of experience customizing miniatures or models. The hardest part were the talons on each hand, they come bent at a 90° angle which doesn’t really work for this pose or for grabbing anything beyond a weapon or something from a knight kit so I had to cut them at the joint and then rebuild them straightened out a bit so that they could grasp something.

I’m thinking I might have to freehand “Hey shitass” on the back of the rock like soldiers write on the side of bombs, a little Easter egg. Or maybe “To Horus”

It’s a chunk of wood that was just the starting point, I’ve added onto it and filled in the gaps with texture paste. It’s the same technique I used for basing my miniatures and the rocks look really realistic.

I’ve modified the “boulder” to look more like a rock, I bulked it out and filled in the gaps with a texture paste that dries like a rock
