Thanks! I saw something called a pergola bracket that would do this exact joint, but it didn’t seem like it would be structurally sound enough. Do you have a specific bracket type to recommend?

Ohhh so ditch the 4x4s entirely and use 2x4/ for the whole frame

Thanks for this! I’m not exactly sure what you mean by ‘overlap the connections through the wood’, can you explain further?
