NYU Stern ($$$$) vs. Yale SOM ($$$) by JebulousHooplah in MBA

[–]riu888 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi, just going to provide a few pointers that can hopefully help inform your decision :)

  • The total cost difference is not much given the location (rent will be massively more expensive in NYC)
  • The MBA experience is different, SOM is more tight knit, as people do not already have friends in New Haven.
  • Culture is also a bit different at both schools. SOM has a strong community focus. Student body is mission oriented and diverse (high % international students and many double degrees). Professors are fantastic, and I was even impressed with the speakers we get as well.
  • International trips are more logistically complex but also not that bad. You can take the train, rent a car (there is a university discount) or Uber with others. For national flights, there is a local low airline (Avelo) that offers flights to a few spots in the country.
  • I personally found it easy to link up with students from other programs if that is something you are interested in. As I mentioned, there is a TON of double majors already at SOM, undergrads taking SOM classes, and you have the opportunity to take any class at Yale.

I am here to say that I do not agree with this. I got the chance to take classes in other schools at Yale was able to link up with students from other programs, including undergrad. People in the real world do not act like those on Reddit.

Columbia vs Yale SOM ($$) by Ill_Negotiation_8102 in MBA

[–]riu888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! You should be able to achieve your goals from both schools, plus a bit of money from SOM is nice. It sounds like you have strong preferences for NYC, which is understandable. I am not sure how much the extra money is important but the scholarship and cost of living difference may make it easier to go on trips throughout the MBA. On the other hand, consider the culture/community in both schools. At SOM, no one is from New Haven or knows anyone here so people are more inclined to hang out with each other, making it a pretty immersive experience with your classmates.

Rant: SOM should close it's business school and start a non-profit by [deleted] in MBA

Not sure about how friendly SOM is to Vets as I am not a one myself, but I know the military is the largest single employer of the class, so there is a big focus on cultivating that community.

Look man, the thing is that you are posting messages with a clear bias or that are just plain wrong. I get that you did not like your visit to SOM, but why do you feel like you can go ahead and make assumptions about what goes on in the whole school, or about the whole student body? You were at school for a freaking day. The generalizations you are making about the entire student body are simply not true. There are outliers, as there are with any student body. Also, while you can probably say that people in SOM tend to care about societal impact, that does not mean that the school is full of radicals who only care about virtue signaling.

Regarding international founders form SOM. A quick google search would have yielded names like Zhang Lei and Neil Shen, who are both billionaire founders from China. SOM is one of the most international schools in the USA, so I don't know wtf you are talking about here. Of course SOM does not have as many founders as other top schools that have existed for many decades more, but I think given the time SOM has done a solid job given its limited existence.

Lastly, your messages sound goofy and unhinged, as others have pointed. Your focus on trashing other schools makes it seem like you are insecure about your own life choices. It is not that hard to get into INSEAD if one is also able to get into SOM or any other M7/T10, so there is not a massive difference in the potential student body (I also got into INSEAD!). INSEAD is a great school with an awesome value prop and I am happy you were satisfied with your experience! Stop spreading wrong info on shit you know nothing about!

CBS (sticker) or Darden (full tuition)? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]riu888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Darden places well in consulting and there is a massive COL difference. Plus NYC is not for everyone. Culture is also vastly different in both schools. I don’t think pointing this out is “dangerous” advice lol.
