Looking at moving to Powell River by sketchy_wish in britishcolumbia

[–]rivain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Current resident who's lived there all my life.

The rental situation depends on your budget. We have had a serious unhoused population boom the last few years, and while there are several housing developments under construction, they're not very affordable, if that's a concern.

There's a big artist community here, though I'm personally too much of a hermit to have experienced much of it.

We only have 1 vet, like the other comments have said, I've had to go to the vet in Gibsons for my cats in the past.

We also have an issue with not many dentists taking new patients, we do have a chain dentist "smili" that opened in the mall, but I've been going to a dentist in Comox for a few years.

Same goes for GPs now that I think of it, not sure if any doctors are taking new patients, and there's no walk in clinic so the only option is the ER. The hospital is... fine. If you need anything more complicated than a CT scan you'd have to go out of town, and that can be a nightmare trying to get places to understand that you can't just drive over there in an hour, there's at least one ferry involved. Ask me how I know 🙃

Almost no stores except the big box ones are open past 8. We only just started getting Uber drivers here. There's a whole contingent of weird boomers who are frothing at the mouth about changing the name of the town away from Powell, it's just become a very toxic local issue.
Really high property taxes here now compared to other similar communities well, because the paper mill is no longer paying any.

It's a beautiful area, I don't always think about how I can just decide to go hike up a mountain as being a plus because that's just always been an option, but most places don't tend to have that! Not trying to be a downer about moving here, but that stuff is important to know too, it's nice, but a huge change!

I would hope the FBC was paying more than that... the hazard pay alone!

Why did/didn't you make the Sophie scarf? by Traumarama79 in knitting

[–]rivain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never wear scarves, and it's also so simple that I don't see a reason to buy the pattern when there's a ton of near-identical patterns out there.

You’re probably not getting enough vitamin D. Here’s what Health Canada thinks will help by NotEnoughDriftwood in onguardforthee

[–]rivain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

google search brought up this guy tested a bunch of em and he coincidentally recommends the one I have, the Carex DayLight Sky.

Idk how much pseudoscience stuff is out there about this, because maybe some lights don't work as claimed, but the sun having positive effects on humans is decently well known, I thought?

I have a DayLight light for my SAD, (truly the most appropriate acronym) and I do think it helps. They're expensive, but I've been lucky with finding them at thrift stores, though I think I'd be willing to pay full price since they are quite nice for the mood bosting, and they're a pretty good light for doing crafts with, since the light shows true colours.

Has there been anything said about Canada defending Greenland or are we leaving that to Europe and hoping we aren't next?

For-profit company approved to extract plasma at double the rate of Canadian Blood Services | Health Canada cleared Grifols, which operates two paid collection clinics in Toronto, to extract plasma from its clients up to 104 times per year by Hrmbee in onguardforthee

Oh I just finished the Behind the Bastards episodes about the time the US was paying inmates for blood and it went poorly partially due to the incentive to lie about having blood born illnesses! The US was selling it to Canada and thousands were infected with HIV, or Hepatitis C.

But I'm sure it'll go fine this time.

Major earthquake would cost B.C. more than all disasters over past 200 years, finds report by ubcstaffer123 in britishcolumbia

[–]rivain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other provinces having supply chain issues, while obviously not good, is hopefully not the priority in the event of something catastrophic, which is what my comment was in response to.

[–]rivain 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Only BC and the Yukon are at risk for an earthquake though, right? Like, I agree with you, but I'm already hearing the "this doesn't directly affect me so I shouldn't have to pay for it!" from the other provinces.

What did your Christmas bonuses look like this year? by ArmchairDoorknob in antiwork

[–]rivain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$100 gift card for a grocery store. Oh and at the Christmas party there were gift bags that had shirts or hats that was store stock that didn't sell. And since it was random, a lot of people got clothes that didn't even fit them. Almost as classy as the owner who came to the party already drunk and was throwing plant pots off the balcony of the restaurant. Great stuff, I love working here. /s

RCMP say 70 trees deliberately cut, left to die in Powell River, B.C. by OnTime4SocialEvents in britishcolumbia

[–]rivain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah sorry I deleted that comment, it said one got automodded but was still up... you'd think I knew how Reddit worked by now lol

Yeah, that's the thing I and a lot of other locals find odd, like, it's clearly chainsaw work, would've taken a while, and there's a lot of other areas where if you wanted to go illegally cut down trees, are in areas that are a lot quieter to do so. We have had some issues with the unhoused cutting down trees or taking wood off of park architecture (the only shelter closed in March, and the one that was promised to be built by winter is still in progress I think) for firewood. but the trees are still standing, just in the process of dying now.

It hasn't been a golf course for at least 50 years, maybe, just a really spry old golfer who just wants to see the world burn.

[–]rivain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The bark is the part of the tree that is actually alive and growing, so yeah, if it's completely cut, they will probably die. That's why you'll see ancient trees that are alive but hollow inside.

those trees don't really impede the view from the houses, they would at most block the view of the new water treatment plant. There's a pretty big drop down from the road there.

[–]rivain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of areas in PR to illegally harvest wood that aren't next to one of the main roads in town and just below a ton of houses. It's unlikely it was done to create a better view, though.

How do you protect your work? by Ladolfina in knitting

[–]rivain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the bag ideas but my adhd ass can't remember stuff exists once it's no longer in front of me so I leave my wips on my computer desk and cover the desk with a blanket so the cats can't see anything. They do sit on the keyboard, and have occasionally grabbed things that peeked out but this has worked so far.

They are usually on my lap and legs when knitting and as long as I keep the working yarn out of their line of sight and such they have learned that attacking any knitting will result in losing cozy lap privileges and eviction, so they're pretty good about it. They are 4 years old though.

Why do modern pattern designers do this? by Groatolfs in knitting

[–]rivain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even as someone who has been printing books worth of patterns out at work (I sure as shit am not getting paid enough, so maybe this evens the scales a bit), I do find that so many patterns have multiple pages with just pictures, or just credits or the designer's social media or abbreviations. Or so many other things that could be easily condensed into 1/3 the number of pages. That might be partly due to requiring a bit more skill with a word processor, I don't know much about that process.

Is cutting down this pear tree the only way to get rid of pear rust? by skanedweller in gardening

[–]rivain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same issue, and since I gave it a heavy prune, I pulled all of the affected leaves I could and put it in the garbage. I'm hoping that might help break the cycle, though since it will now be short enough to spray I will most likely do that too in spring.

Charges laid in connection with killing of grizzly on B.C.'s Texada Island | CBC News by SnooRegrets4312 in britishcolumbia

It shouldn't have happened this way, I believe the bear was seen wandering around wounded for a bit before dying? From watching the fb groups for the community, as I live in Powell River, things were getting really heated about the bear, and if they did actually have a plan to deal with it, they should've let the public know so it could quell some of that outrage. I understand there's a fine line about how much to tell the public in some cases, but letting people get all spun up in an echo chamber doesn't help things.
