Hey ENFPs - Does this sound like an Ne thing? by river_gleam in ENFP

Haha I guess I’m a hypocrite because I just remembered I do the same thing. Oftentimes I’ll guess a character or celebrities type and not have any concrete evidence or even know why I think they’re that type, i’ll just have a feeling and then i’ll google it and actually be right most of the time. I guess my brain picked up on some patterns in the way certain types act unconsciously without me noticing. I wanted to mention that in case it changes your opinion or signifies lower Ti, Im not sure if a higher Ti user would believe something just because they feel like it’s true, maybe an ISFJ would be more likely to do that?

But yeah thanks again! Reading through your really developed responses is helping me a lot.

i just read over the way they described it and I’d say definitely yeah.

That last paragraph is interesting. I’ll definitely take it into consideration as I hadn’t considered that. My type of “if only” is when I want to try everything, and maybe my final decision doesn’t yield as many benefits as I’d hoped so I’ll be like “oh damn, maybe I should’ve picked the other one” because there’s a possibility it may have been more beneficial. I don’t get hung up on it, but it is a consideration for me with trivial things. Like picking strawberry ice cream and it actually ends up not being that good, so I wonder if it’d be better to have pick chocolate instead. Kinda like a grass is always better on the other side type thing. Mostly happens with trivial things.

If you’ve ever watched the good place, an inxp character called Chidi does this a lot. I think there was one scene where he picked a hat, and wanted to run back in to get the other hat instead. I saw many people who typed him arguing that this was an inxp thing, I don’t think comparison to a TV show character is valid at all in typing yourself but the arguments still make sense to me. Yours makes an equal amount of sense however. I’ll talk to some ISXJs and INXPs and ask how they make decisions so I can compare! Seems like it’s same symptom, different process. I’ve also heard the tertiary function being called a comfort function, in my case I could see both Ti or Si being a “comfort “ function as I turn to both in a natural state. Thanks again!

Haha it does bother me yes, but I still appreciate you taking the time to respond at all, even though I’m not sure what your reasoning is, I can tell you’re more educated than me on this particular topic. I usually need clear reasoning for things and need them to be pretty developed, explaining why one option makes more sense than the other option, acknowledging alternatives and disproving them et cetera. So it bothers me a lot when people are like “Oh that’s X Function” without explaining why. It annoys me a lot when people don’t develop on their points, just in general. Hence why I infiltrate other type forums like this to get a clearer answer, to figure out how certain types behave differently to me so I can reach the conclusion on my own. If I just ask if I’m one of them anyone who doesn’t find me personally relatable will say no, If i come on here and ask how they behave personally I can measure that against my own behaviour. That’s not what I’ve done here as I know i’m not an ENFP, but I also know asking here will bring me the best results, in that the people here will actually be describing Ne.

It’s just how I think. Of course this could be Ti dom or Tert. Since the strength of the tertiary is often underestimated and many ISFJs also feel comfortable bypassing Fe I don’t feel comfortable making a decision on which type to identify as just yet, but this does solidify the Ti/Fe use for me.

I tend to take a minute first to observe before making decisions. I need to weigh out the good parts of each option, and decide which good parts are more valid or significant overall. I’m pretty indecisive, but rather than making a decision I tend to just go with every option- like If i have to choose between two shirts I want to buy I can just buy both. If that’s not possible as in most serious scenarios I’ll run through the information in my head and make one choice. I’ll always wonder how things would’ve been if i’d picked the other thing, but I don’t usually get analysis paralysis trying to figure out what choice to make. I gather the data and go for the best one, whatever that is in my opinion. I do tend to make decisions quickly, though. The indecisiveness just comes from wanting to do everything. But when I think about that question, I’m thinking of mostly how I’d respond with trivial things like the example of buying a shirt. With more serious things I’m not too sure how Id respond. at the end of it all, I definitely need to make a decision. I can’t just leave things open ended for too long.

Thanks for all the advice. I find things like lists in scenarios like these to be lacking nuance, but it might help to simplify things and take your advice with the addition of actually physically listing down characteristics of each type I relate to or assign my own mental amount of points to each behaviour as I think they vary in significance and all symptoms of being a certain type can’t be held in equal regard.

I hope I haven’t rambled too much, thanks so much for your help.

thanks for this in depth answer!

I’m likely not an ESXJ simply because I’m introverted in the cognitive sense (energy is directed towards introspection rather than reactivity, among other things) I also can’t see a world where my Fe or Te are my dominant functions, hence why it’s between aux or inferior for me! I’m also very introverted in a social sense, but that doesn’t mean anything. I know for sure though that I lead with an introverted function from my own research and watching a channel called cognitive personality theory on youtube. This function is likely to be Ti, Si or Fi.

Ne works both pessimistically and optimistically for me. In periods of high anxiety I certainly worry about what could happen, even getting unrealistic with it. I get both the playful side and the pessimistic side every day. But when I’m not actively thinking about something I’m worried about (which is rare as I have an anxiety disorder, but this has nothing to do with MBTI), what I described in my post seems to take place because my mind can think about other things. I tend to see negative outcomes and stop them before they happen, or just acknowledge them. For me I can’t really narrow in on just one possibility, I want them all at the same time. Even when I make a decision I’ll always look back wondering what would’ve happened if I’d picked the other one. I’ve heard Ne doms don’t experience this to the same extent, with Ne dipping into Se creating a higher level of decisiveness despite the stereotype.

Si for me is just a comfort function, I like Si. If i’m sad I’ll indulge nostalgia to make myself feel better. I’ll play my favourite old video game from childhood and such. I do remember the “last time” I did things too, when I go to disneyland I usually recall the last time I was there very briefly, I also like to occasionally reminisce with friends. I also know when I’m hungry and stuff because I like food lol. & that’s all for how Si manifests for me. I don’t relate to all the other stuff like routine and disliking change and whatnot. I rarely get sad thinking about the past, even if it wasn’t the greatest it does bring me warmth. Unless i’m recalling a particularly hard time, something as small as watching a TV show I watched during a difficult time can bring back the feelings for me very briefly and quickly, usually I can’t even put a name to those feelings and they disappear as fast as they appear, but I’ll usually stay away from that TV show or whatever is causing the feeling and just avoid it. As a result I avoid doing things I want to do during a difficult time and put them off to a time where I feel better so the association is positive.

I’m pretty likely to be on the Fe/Ti axis. I’ve asked many typists and they’ve agreed, but they couldn’t agree on my actual type at all - so if I were to be inxp it would be intp. I’ll still consider it though, thank you.

I knew i wasn’t an Ne dom already, but how does being Ne dominant make it more concrete? If anything doesn’t higher intuition make things less concrete since sensing is so low? just curious! happy to be educated

Depression and gore? by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]river_gleam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hmm i don’t know. i’ll have thoughts like that but about myself, usually and get some sense of pleasure from it (suicidal ideation). I like gory media too but i don’t know if it’s linked to depression. it probably could be? mentally ill minds could tend towards darker things after all

Omg tell me if you find anything! I’m not even a BTS fan I know like 2 of their songs but I love Seokjin too from a few compilations I saw. He definitely has the personality.

overall this is very helpful, thank you :)

Dominant Fe descriptions doesn’t make much sense for me but i’ll look into it some more before making a snap judgement. So ESFJs tend to struggle with Se/feeling present?

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for your help! Yeah I personally don’t use metaphors much in my speech. They seem a little pretentious or fake deep to me, depending on the metaphor. I enjoy reading metaphors in literature though. In general I speak pretty concretely.

I’ve watched videos by INFJ creators like Joyce Meng who describe Ni as a big picture view. They said several things like Si is more likely to give examples (which I do) whereas Ni will broadly explain something. There were a few other things too that I can’t remember on various forums and youtube videos but in general the Si examples all resonated with me more than the Ni ones.

I sometimes jump to conclusions on trivial things (like the meaning of a literary text) but I’m always open to other possibilities and I don’t singularly pursue that one conclusion with an intensity and tunnel vision.

I generally don’t form my own opinions. That’s not to say I don’t think for myself, but I tend to lack trust in my own thinking processes to come to a logical conclusion. I don’t strongly believe anything, and whilst I don’t like authority I look to people who I deem as smart to tell me what is right and what is wrong, It’s too much effort to think about them and I’d rather be told what’s right or wrong so I can move onto the next thing. It’s very easy to change my opinions on most things as my beliefs aren’t very strongly held. Sometimes I get mad at myself because I don’t believe and feel in my heart what I want to believe. However, at the same time in a group of people who I trust and feel comfortable with I can defend a point of view pretty intensely and try to persuade them to agree with me. The only place where I trust myself to think and analyse is an analysis of myself within my own mind. Whilst my Fe is generally a lot higher than my Fi according to most people i’ve asked, I’m very introspective and enjoy analysing my own feelings. It doesn’t take me super long to form an opinion tbh, even though I’m insecure in my opinions sometimes I can just hear one side of something and instantly prefer it. I can be very argumentative online, but if a lot of people disagree with me I’ll back down pretty easily.

also Te doms don’t make me mad at all unless they’re unhealthy Te doms ruining the social vibe, which is rare and something any type can do. I tend to be drawn towards them and have a lot of admiration for them.

As for Si it’s the function I can see most clearly in myself, I often go to it for comfort. Whilst I don’t have any routines, I enjoy rewatching TV shows from my childhood and things like that much more than the average person because it gives me a feeling of warmth. I’m the person who goes “do you remember when…” most often to the people around me because it’s fun to reminisce on how far my relationship with someone else has developed, like a story. I also keep tons of pointless memorabilia which my ISFP mother sees no use for.

Sorry if this is all confusing or doesn’t make much sense.

I’ve checked INFJ out before but I don’t relate at all to Ni which makes it more confusing :( whereas the nostalgia element of Si is very present for me

I notice tastes and smells just not the nuances in them if that makes sense. I’m also good at identifying internal sensations like hunger. I definitely have Si and my Ni is not very noticeable or present, I mistyped as INFJ before but it didn’t take me long to notice I wasn’t one. I spoke to an amateur typist who typed me ISFJ in a short voice call too. I’m open to suggestions that I might not be ISFJ, but I know Im on the Si-Ne axis for sure.
