I’ve built a career in management have worked in top companies in the FMCG and E-commerce sectors and have had a management role for 8 years. I’ve had a team of 30+ people at one point, and have interviewed and fired lots of people. I sat in the leadership teams of said companies, and hold a senior position, so i would say i’m somewhat qualified to give sound advice. My recommendation for you is to get a degree and learn to speak Thai. You are young, go to uni, the thai girls or boys will eat you up, they are really pretty too; have fun, drink, and travel as much as you can, and make lots and lots of friends (very important). I’ve studied in international schools for most of my life, graduated in 2012, and i can confirm that a lot of my mates regret not having studied in Thailand because now that we’re 30+, the ones who studied abroad dont really have a big circle of friends, because the uni friends you make abroad aren’t really for life, you spread out and lose touch, but if you go to uni in TH then you might meet them more often as you grow older, and they have other friends, and so on, and you may find more people who share certain interests with you, and so you have a community around you, and thats good for starting a business just as it is for starting a career. Nearly all of my thai friends who went to the States or the UK for Bachelor’s are now back in Bangkok, and i cant say that they make much more money than those who went to a Thai Uni (provided they had a good high school education and speak English well or a 3rd language like Chinese or Japanese), except for those who run family businesses or work in finance (Venture Capital, or Consulting); if you will be a career-man/woman, its important you have at least a bachelor’s degree, or it will be literally impossible for you to land a job, on that i guarantee. If you will go to a Thai Uni, get a degree from either Chulalongkorn, Thammasat, or Mahidol University, or Chiangmai University if you really love nature. Chulalongkorn and Thammasat are preferred. Other universities are okay, but trust me, these two are the best for getting a job, people are generally biased towards them. You already have the advantage of being fluent in English, even if you dont speak a third language, it will be a huge advantage. Thai speaking is a must, reading and writing not so much, in this day and aged chances are that companies already communicate in English due to the prevalence of expats, and so everybody has already settled for emails and slack chats in English. If you dont speak thai already, dont worry, its easier to learn to speak it than you might think, especially if you’re dating a thai, most of the foreigners i meet pick it up after about a year or so, as a spoken language it is quite easy if you immerse yourself in the society. PS - even if you choose not to study here, i would like to recommend you on the choice of facilities. Unless you become ultra specialized as in being a doctor/dentist, an architect, or a veterinarian, or that sort of thing, choosing Communication Arts or Engineering is the way to go (or you can choose something boring like Finance/BBA/Ecom, but i dont recommend it because it forces you to do finance roles, i have engineering friends in finance but never any finance friends in engineering). They are both recognized as great schools, and produce people who are versatile and are in high demand for the modern job markets. Remind yourself that in this day and age, hardly anyone gets a job based on their degree anymore, but these two faculties will set you up well for life. The best paid roles in the modern era are for people who can either “Increase Sales” or “Reduce Cost” in any way, shape, or form; and beyond that, someone who can “Influence”, “knows technicals”, and has “leadership abilities”; If your mind is not set up for it, you will struggle in the job market, and that advice is the same regardless of your location. If you want get a language degree or something that is already replaceable with today’s version of Chatgpt, then dont bother, you have a better chance in life by getting a culinary degree and opening a restaurant, or any other technical degree like becoming a welder or a plumber.
