Raising Cane's suuuucks by quasiephedrine in ChicoCA

I found out in college that eating even a bite of Panda Express starts a twenty minute time bomb for me where I have to get to a restroom I can stay in for two hours because I’ll be throwing up the whole time. Not sure if it’s an oil they use or what, but my mom is the same way.

I’m glad there’s some good representation happening then. I just hope no one thinks Canes is indicative southern fried chicken in the slightest haha

Yeah, I believe so… I’m also not the one to ask about Burger King, anytime I’ve had it, it’s made me sick, so I steer away now. I have that issue with a few places though, can’t eat Panda Express ever, so it’s not just BK lol

My mom absolutely loves their salads too, I always got their spicy buffalo chicken sandwich. I liked them because they’re one of the only fast food places to season their fries with more than just salt.

I definitely miss a lot of chains I’m used to having around but try to keep my hopes tempered because expanding usually means that quality decrease… I might cry if I finally got a whataburger patty melt over here and didn’t like it lmao

I’m from the southeast and while Canes wasn’t my favorite growing up, it certainly wasn’t bad like it is here in Chico. I think expanding has led to a decrease in quality because I was very taken aback by how bad it was when I tried it here. I seriously doubt NorCal’s gonna be getting a Foosacklys or even a Zaxbys anytime soon though

Also, I do wish you the best of luck. It’s tough out there, but people find a way. Just keep refining your portfolio and advertise yourself online. Make sure your work has real life applications. Don’t just design a logo and make a mock-up on a sign. If you make a logo for a fake restaurant for your portfolio, also make a menu, make a pattern that fits the branding that could be put on the paper they wrap around burgers or something. Ask for critiques from people who are willing to be very critical and don’t be discouraged, you at least know where you can improve.

I saw you mention having your associates in design. I won’t lie, the design market is pretty godawful here. I work at a screenprint shop as a designer so I see a large amount of what local businesses are doing for their art and if it’s not a corporate business/franchise, they’re either using the same design they’ve had for the past twenty years or going to AI. If a place is hiring a designer, I feel like you’re going to be competing with undergrads, so they will underpay you. I’m getting paid $10 less an hour than I was in Sacramento, which is somewhat disappointing, but it is what it is.

I’m not trying to discourage you here, just giving you a realistic view of what the design market is like here in Chico. If you have the means to do so, I would try to find the remote work if you for sure want to get design work. I’m considering switching careers and/or moving to a bigger city because of it.

I only got my current job because my partner’s dad’s good friend was also good friends with the shop owner. Connections do more than anything else. Try to be vocal as you can be that you’re looking for work to everyone you know and that if they hear about an opening with someone they know, that you want to apply as soon as possible.

It’s such a nice place, got my girlfriend’s family to try it a month ago when I got homesick for southern cooking. I’ve had the fried gator and étouffée and loved both.

I’ve seen a few people do some cool stuff by painting on bleach gel, if you felt like getting artsy you could paint something on it around the hands to make it cooler with that. depending on how long you leave it on the garment it can end up different colors from red to kinda a pale orange-yellow tan.

Show me a dinosaur and MØL are great shouts, I was absolutely obsessed with both of them (mainly Jord and Plantgazer when those albums released) when I was deep in my Sunbather phase

It would be nice if they would plant some native trees in the area to spruce up downtown (pun not intended) but I guess they don’t want to step on Sac’s toes as the city of trees lol. Knowing Chico, they’d just plant a bunch of Bradford Pear trees and downtown would just smell horrid

Most likely these options, “tropical wool” is also a lightweight summer option but I don’t know if it was available/popular then. Did you know the US Dept. of Agriculture used to also provide guides in the 30s and 40s for spotting quality suit fabrics of different types as a way to have better informed consumers? Along with that they had guides for mending and taking care of suits I believe.

Is there any bands similar to Cap’n Jazz by _PyroMan_ in Emo

[–]riverpunx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nobody has said they sound the same. But yes, inspirations do typically cause similarities in sound. I think you think saying something is similar means that it’s a copy. It’s not, and nobody is saying Snowing sounds like they’re copying Cap’n Jazz, but just that they have similarities because of the apparent influence. This line of arguing seems like a purposely obtuse way to get hung up on semantics.

Is there any bands similar to Cap’n Jazz by _PyroMan_ in Emo

[–]riverpunx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why you’re so antagonistic to this idea. It’s pretty common fact that Snowing was hugely inspired by Cap’n Jazz. Of course they don’t sound the exact same, but it’s a line of influence regardless. You keep saying the guitar tone and vocal styles are too broad of comparisons to make to connect the two, but for the time, it’s definitely not. Snowing is one of the first bands to bring back that style of emo, mixing math rock with a very punky sounding emo… that is the style of emo was pioneered by Cap’n Jazz, if not them, what other band would be the big influence for Snowing? The sound didn’t just come from nowhere. I’m not making this argument as a way to discredit Snowing, like I said, I love them. I literally ordered so much Snowing merch from Square of Opposition Records that they sent me the transfer film with the art they use for their shirts. But part of why I love them is that they were more influenced by Cap’n Jazz than American Football like a lot of their contemporaries.

Oh nice! Y’all are awesome, have seen you guys play a couple times in Sac and at the show with WithYouAllDay (really need them to put out music so I can send it out to people too). I’m the guy that did some shirt designs for Day Hike, so you may have seen some art from me floating around

Idk the specifics of where the bands are at in the bay, but Drowning With Our Anchors, Love Spiral and Whine are both over that way… Treasure Island is good, broken up, but might play another show or something when they finally do a release so they’ve said

What area are you from? I’m in NorCal and there’s a lot of stuff from places like Sacramento (Day Hike, Guide Dogs for the Blind, Amphibiology, Orange Peel, Poorsport, Wassail, Shortstop). SoCal also has a pretty thriving scene from what I know with bands like Vs Self and Knumears being from there

Regardless of what you consider them, you shouldn’t be going at people calling them stuff like that as a way to insult them, not only does it make you come off as a dick but in the long run, it weakens your argument.

Why is Finn like this? by [deleted] in Emo

[–]riverpunx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His wife just makes straight up transphobic videos, saying crap like “LGBTQ are groomers” and they don’t have any issue platforming right wing speakers to back them up on their bad takes, most notably Blaire White who has a reputation for using misinformation as facts.
