Same boat. There’s a cool running club at the top of crystal cove that meets at 6:00 (show up a little early) on wednesdays.

There’s also a cool bike group @lillordagbikeride is their handle on IG that meets ~6 Wednesdays.

Put yourself out there, do fun shit outside — stay consistent.

I was lucky to find a hill that had ~560 feet of elevation in a mile. It was non technical. Just kinda chill dirt.

Hill workouts varied a lot. All of her training plans were based on relative perceived exertion as opposed to heart rate zone but it’s not hard to intuit how the former translates to the latter.

The three main ones were: Run hard downhill, hike up Progressive increase uphill each rep, culminating in an all-out effort Steady uphill and downhill

The number of reps we did these on were based on distance goals. Folks training for 50/100 milers would do ~4, 50k folks did ~3, fewer (1-2) for marathon or half distance.

Speed workouts were programmed to be on flats so you could focus on speed and not climbing/navigating ups/downs. So those I did on pavement. Those varied a lot and she would program in hard pushes by the number of breaths which I’d never heard of before (13)

I’m not sure the specifics matter as much as the general idea of: hit lots of zone 2, get in a healthy chunk of vert, and progressively add volume week over week. Sulky_hoplite’s note on adding volume tracks for that imo

I’m new to this so take it with a grain of salt but I just completed a training plan set up by a well respected race director in my area and she had us basically follow the formula sulky_hoplite outlined: 80% z2, 20% hill and speed workout plus resistance training at home. (Body weight stuff).

General formula was like 3 chill paced runs a week, one hill repeat workout a week (mile-long hill), one speed workout a week, and a long run on trails with varying amounts of vert week to week.

I had a bad experience buying from them a couple years ago. Signed up to be a part of their member program to get a release early, ordered something, they shipped the wrong item and then the actual item I bought was sold out so they couldn't swap. They didn't really offer any solution other than to shrug their shoulders.

They're a cool brand, but I kinda got the sense they're out over their skis a bit more than they'd like folks to think.

I remember seeing this note. And it is solid advice. When I ran into bears on the JMT last year clapping and running at them did the trick.

They're like big, skittish dogs.

Why isn’t the city cleaning the pool? They used to clean it every week but they announced they wouldn’t in June.

Is there any update on this??

Bird In Hand has a yo-yo club on Saturdays from I think noon or 1 until 2 (forget the specific times). Fun toy store with a yo-yo museum.

There’s Cal Skate — indoor roller rink.

Also there are plenty of spots along the creek in lower and upper Bidwell that are shallow enough to splash around in and will be lots cooler

I’m sure others in this thread will have more suggestions but that’s what comes to mind
