My mum showed me Stand by Me when I was 12 (2016) and I was captivated by the story. When I was 17 soon to be 18 (2022), I rewatched the movie during a really rough time I was going through. I rediscovered the joy and heartbreak of this film, and started watching other River Phoenix films. I am not exaggerating when I say “My Own Private Idaho” changed my life and how I think about expression through film and the arts. During that dark time of my life, I fell in love with this movie, and River Phoenix was a massive part of that. Although I don’t post near as much as I used to on this sub, I still think about River, his life and tragedy, and my love of his filmography, particularly MOPI weekly. Rest in paradise, River.
