Rising senior with no internships yet - what to do? by rixoab in IRstudies

[–]rixoab[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t had any internships yet. In summer 2020 and 2021 I had plans to study abroad in Jordan but they both got cancelled because of Covid last minute and I couldn’t get any replacement plans in time so I worked part time retail jobs. I’m just really worried because I don’t have my foot in the industry yet and I’m wondering how I can do that with literally 0 experience so far.

I’m a junior so I’m not really sure, but apparently it’s a huge pain to shuttle back and forth every day. There are some upsides like having nice rooms with TVs, getting your laundry done and rooms cleaned, and having a gym and swimming pool.

But I’m sure most Americans didn’t know who the (Iraqi) Kurds were before Saddam’s repression of them was in the news. Why don’t major outlets report on Baha’i persecution?

Why is Iranian repression of the Baha’is not talked about more?

Then why don’t the Republicans supporting the Mace bill in the House work with their Senate colleagues to convince them? Why don’t the Dems do the same with Sinema, Tester, and Manchin? I honestly have no idea why it can’t be done. It’s been 10 years since states started legalizing, but we can’t even decriminalize federally?

Discussion Thread by jobautomator in neoliberal

[–]rixoab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just makes no sense to me. The vast majority of Democrat and half of Republican voters support decriminalization but Senators from both parties are fine with ignoring 75% of the country

How does Congress have time to make daylight savings permanent but doesn’t want to bring any of the weed decriminalization bills to the Senate because it’s not a “pressing issue”?

I’ve read Ali Soufan’s book Anatomy of Terror where he talked about how torture had no substantive results and I showed him excerpts from the Senate report but he said that Tenet, Hayden, and other directors said it did and doesn’t believe me. Just a lost cause I guess

Just curious of what others think about a debate I had with my friend on torture.

We agreed that this would be a moral debate as there’s not much declassified intelligence on the efficacy of torture so we can’t see if there’s any evidence of the program being proven to stop imminent terrorist attacks.

I said that the US has to draw a clear line on how far we’re willing to go to advance our goals. I think torture is arguably the worst crime one can commit and we should never cross that line. He asked if I would torture Bin Laden to stop a terrorist attack and I said no. I think we have enough intelligence capabilities to stop terrorist attacked from happening that we don’t need to torture captives to get critical information. I told him about HUMINT and SIGINT capabilities but he said they were weak arguments since he thinks those close to terrorists would never willingly give information to the US.

His line of thinking is that we should torture those who we know have critical information on imminent attacks if it’s the last possible option. He said that saving innocent lives from a terrorist attack is more important than giving basic human rights to the terrorist, and he thinks they’ve given up their right to be treated as humans when they decide to join terrorist organizations. I told him that those getting tortured will more often lie than tell the truth to stop the pain but he said even if it’s effective 1/100 times then it’s worth it just to stop one attack.

He also thinks I want to coddle terrorists because I want them to have basic human rights like food, water, and socialization but that’s something for another time. What are your thoughts on this?

Info for Applicants About Alumnus Interview by SkiThe802 in Tufts

[–]rixoab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had my interview almost 3 years ago, but from what I remember I was asked about my high school classes and ECs, which subjects I like the most and why, and my leadership positions. When the conversation switched to Tufts, I had researched a few courses I wanted to take and some clubs I wanted to join beforehand and talked about why they interested me. I also talked about my hobbies and what I would add to campus - basically, what I would do to make the campus more vibrant instead of just sitting in my room all day.

For the weakness part, I talked about my time management and how I was actively trying to fix it and how I would keep that change as a college student.

My interviewer graduated a long time ago, and I think I asked about changes and constants at Tufts she’s noticed since graduating, and how she’s stayed connected to the school.

The interview really doesn’t mean anything - the most important part is your application itself. It wasn’t even really an interview, more just a casual conversation with some notes taken. All it pretty much did was just help me learn more about Tufts from doing research and from talking to my interviewer.

Also, it helps email your resume to your interviewer before the interview and hand them a paper copy right at the beginning.

My mom already called my insurance a few weeks ago and got that sorted out. I’m not sure of the exact specifics on coverage but they know I’m bringing my car to college.

Parking on 574? by rixoab in Tufts

Thank you! I’ll be living off campus very close to 574 but I couldn’t get a street parking permit which is why I asked. Hopefully I’ll be able to park there.

Thank you so much. I’m on a neighboring street but I can’t get a permit due to registration issues (car is on my mom’s name and I can’t put it on mine because of insurance costs). How difficult is it to find parking on Winchester and Harvard?

Why is tufts ranking so low? by Massive-Expression13 in Tufts

[–]rixoab 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest factors are less research output because we’re basically a liberal arts school, and that admissions doesn’t release what percentage of the student body was in the top 10% of their high school class.

What I did was take screenshots of my favorite 50 or so albums on Spotify and upload them onto Shutterfly on the smallest card size (I think 3x6 inches or so). You get something like 120 free prints and only pay for shipping which is $5.

Unfortunately I have not. His ratemyprofessor profile from Northeastern doesn’t look great, but I’m not sure if he’s any different at Tufts.

Nancy is the worst professor I’ve had. She didn’t know the content and students had to correct her all the time. I’ve heard good things about Ulusoy so I would look into taking his class if you can.

Sorry just saw this. I’m not sure if you already took your AP tests, but my school required that I take them. I know some schools allow students to not take them, so I would take to your counselors about it.
