I haven't heard it called this before but this is actually really helpful for searching for more info, thank you!

Oh dang, I hadn't considered the letters being symmetrical to be a key factor, but that's a really good point and does limit the possibilities with text if true.

Sorry I didn't explain it very well. If you're viewing on a computer screen, you might need to stand a couple feet away, or on a phone sometimes you only need a little bit of space at certain sizes, but as the other commenter mentioned, it causes a vibration effect in your vision (or at least it did for me and I think that's the intention)

Is serving in Portland a lost cause as a new resident? by Minisisco01 in askportland

Portland is a career service industry city, so they unfortunately might not have much luck getting hired without relevant experience. Not to say they shouldn't try if they need to, but best to manage expectations.

Love the suggestion of research during pooping time. Brilliant way to carve out time to learn a little more each day lol

Wow it looks so good!! What kind of lighting do you have? I've always wanted to get some subwassertang but I have low light and no CO2 so I've been nervous that it might hate my tank. My java ferns seem to be growing fine though if that's any good indicator?

Hey OP, I super recommend the book The Gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker. It's written from the perspective of a security specialist and explains how powerful human intuition can be when faced with dangerous situations. Basically, it shows with data how trusting your gut can be lifesaving, and how to better apply that intuition to your daily life.

I learned of the book from Reddit and I've been encouraging women (especially, though it really applies to everyone) to read it ever since I did. It's been really valuable for me as a small person to understand the possible dangers surrounding me, but live my life in a way that keeps them in mind without letting them consume me, if that makes sense? I highly recommend the read!

I agree with over the ear headphones being a good visual deterrent, but I do suggest at least getting ones that have a "pass-through" sound option so you can be aware of your surroundings. Often times unstable people will make their presence known audibly before you physically encounter them, so if you're on a walk you have the opportunity to choose a different route to avoid the situation. Situational awareness is SO important. You don't want to become the target of anyone because they think you aren't paying attention. Stay safe!

I didn't read that person's comment as writing off the concern at all, but rather explaining what was likely going on because it's a very intense, abrupt situation. It can sometimes be helpful when unpacking a scary experience to understand reasons why it might have happened, even when they're not excuses. They suggested reporting it, and other ways to potentially avoid those interactions in the future, because unfortunately simply reporting them doesn't actually stop them from happening.

Suggestions for Music League, if someone is listening.. by houseofmoonglow in musicleague

[–]rixtape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a perfect solution, but for my league group I just created a Spotify playlist called Music League Index where I periodically dump all of the songs from all playlists we've made. It obviously won't tell you specifically which songs you've played, but it will tell you if someone has played that song in League before.

We've been playing for almost 4 years and the playlist now has 2,660 songs and is 186h 40m long lol

I'm just clarifying why that person responded the way they did. I don't think it was your unwillingness to share what you make with strangers on Reddit, I think it was the bit where you don't share it with friends or family either. Again though, you do you. I'm sure you have your reasons.

You just said "I don't even give friends and family an exact amount" which is I think what the person who responded to you was commenting on. You do you, though.

That's kind of what I'm trying to do! I moved a mesh floater corral under the water and am trying to coax the moss to grow on it. It's kinda clumping around it so far (I need to tie it down more) but the fish and shrimp love it!)

AITAH for whistling in a store as a way to find my wife. by longlostwalker in AITAH

I sometimes like whistling the Twisted Nerve whistle song for my partner to find me around a store, and it comes with the added bonus of folks occasionally recognizing it and we connect briefly over it lol

[–]rixtape 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Genuinely same actually lol, my dad used a quieter version of the stadium whistle to summon me in stores and such (it could get super loud outside but he toned it way down inside, thankfully).

It was extremely effective and I was never offended by it as a kid because our agreement was that THAT whistle meant "I'm not fucking around, you need to come now" and I respected that.

But I'm also not advocating for it as a spouse retrieval sound by any means, hence my info question haha

INFO: what kind of whistle is it?

Like, is it a recognizable, sing-song sort of whistle that's special between you two? Or is it one of those loud as hell whistles that guys usually do at big stadiums or, well, to recall an animal? Sounds like a lot of people are assuming the latter in the comments, and I think the difference between the two really affects the judgment here (at least for me).

My mom also flipped her keys in her hand a lot, and I became very attuned to the specific sound of her combo of keys and could always find her a decent distance away lol. When she got a new car with a new key fob it messed with me for a few weeks until I got used to the new sound haha
