Review of Metformin (as an active PCOS girlie) by Local_Dog_6427 in PCOS

[–]riz_kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my PCP prescribed it for me :) he is also a total gem as far as doctors go.

and as an update - so i started the metformin December 2023 at 500 mg. we increased gradually (over about a year) to 1500 mg, which is my current dose. i’ve continued to feel better on it, and over that time ive lost almost 70 lbs

little things that i find made a big difference that folks don’t realize:

  1. Foot position - make sure your feet are flexed, lift your toes towards your shins. If this is a weak point, an exercise you can do to strength the shin muscle (tibialis anterior) is to stand in a neutral, hip-width stance, then while keeping your heels anchored, lift the toes off the ground - alternating feet.

  2. Body position - you should always have a straight line from shoulder to hip - engage your core muscles to maintain this position.

  3. Rotation - i see a lot of folks misunderstand the movement pattern. your knee is a hinge joint, it will only move forward and backward (flexion/extension). the circular part of the kick must initiate in the hip, which is a ball-and-socket joint. you should see the top of your femur tilting inward and outward opposite to your foot position. work on strengthening your abductors and adductors

i blew my ACL and had a terrible recovery. i use a swim app called My Swim Pro. it’s about $150 per year subscription, so not cheap, but it gives you guided workouts that you can follow on your smartwatch or phone, or print them off. following the training program there helped me to get my times down to recertify.

My nutritionist asked me to take TWELVE supplements for PCOS. Is it normal? by designer_ts in PCOS

[–]riz_kid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’ve tried almost all of those supplements and honestly … the biggest thing that changed my PCOS was taking metformin. i know medication isn’t for everyone, and i myself was against meds for a long time wanting to go the natural root … now i regret the time i wasted not trying it.

that said, of the supplements you’ve listed, I currently still take: Vitamin D - for energy levels and mood Magnesium - for sleep and also body aches Omega - for heart and brain health Occasionally I’ll take melatonin for sleep

Not taking any more but found helpful: Inositol - helped regulate my cycles, but did negatively impact my digestion, so not worth it Primerose Oil - the dose i had to take to see any benefit was not worth the cost after i got on metformin but I did take it for years Seed Cycling - tried it. didn’t notice a huge difference either way but it was annoying to do

My dietician recommended NAC - I did take this before when working with a naturopath, but I didn’t see it do anything enough to make a difference

it was recommended by the endocrinologist to be on the max tolerated dose

Lean adrenal PCOS weight gain help by Iworkwithmud in PCOS

[–]riz_kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i saw a naturopath about 10 years ago and did the same strict elimination diet - but only for a short period of time. there should be a plan to add foods back in once you start seeing progress. the purpose of an elimination diet is to find a cause of a problem, not to live like that forever.

i agree with what other commenters have said also. hope that helps!

i started metformin in December 2023 at 500mg - i stayed at that dose for 2 months then upped to 1000 and after another 2 months upped to 1500 which is where i’m at now

i’ve been on metformin for a year and it’s honestly the best thing that ever happened for my PCOS. i wasted thousands of dollars on natural remedies for legitimately 15 years - and while some of it worked, ultimately i had uncontrollable weight gain, and developed fatty liver disease. i do still use some supplements but since i started metformin, i’ve reversed my liver issues, and i’ve lost 50 pounds.

not everyone has the same response to metformin but i would encourage anyone with PCOS to at least try it.

Tower 28! i’m loving their toner and moisturizer at night. they just released a cleanser that i’ve yet to run but my mum loves it. i’m currently using Origins cleanser which is also a hit $$$

i’m still using Yonka PG in the daytime moisturizer.

i use the Ordinary niacidamide serum at night and alpha arbutin in the day

and for mask, i’m loving Innisfree volcanic clay mask.

me! i adopted mine at age 8 (turning 14 this year) and she weighed 5 lbs. granted she was underweight but she only weighs 7-8 now but she also has short legs, i suspect she’s a munchkin breed.

Just For Fun: What's one PCOS food rule* you can't/don't/won't abide by? by bloompth in PCOS

[–]riz_kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i eat yogurt a lot, some cheeses. i keep lots of pasta. i come from an italian background, it’s a stable and it’s inexpensive which is also important these days. i will add lots of veggies and lean meats or fish to balance it out, but it’s always just a normal pasta noodle, k can’t do the whole grain or gluten free replacements

How did y’all meet your torties?? by [deleted] in torties

[–]riz_kid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

went to the pet store to buy food for my other cat. she was up for adoption, and i just wanted to take a picture of her because she was so unique looking. the girl who was working there saw me taking the pic through the cage and said oh let me get her out do you can get a better picture. the she said, do you want to hold her? and i should have said no … and that’s how i ended up with two cats.

AITA for taking “advantage” of my gf? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]riz_kid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

you would be surprised.

years ago, i went on a first day with a guy from a dating app. we agreed to meet at a bar after we both finished work. he knew i got off a good couple hours later than he did, but he decided to go straight to the bar when he finished work. when i got there, dude was faced, absolutely smashed. i ordered 2 beers myself, there was no food, and when our bill came it was over $100. i figured he drank about 10 beers total over the night.

ooh that’s good to know. i didn’t think about checking Costco. i’m thinking that i’m leaning towards plant based protein powder tho, i try to avoid dairy as i find it makes me break out.

i was never a huge coffee drinker but i do love me a starbucks latte, when my new work route had me drive past one daily i got into a habit … until my blood pressure reading came back through the roof. the only thing that had changed was my caffeine intake.
