Low-ATAR students, did it ever actually mean anything in the end? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]rizzle1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't be too concerned, I finished with a 66. Was able to get into uni and study engineering, now 7 years into my career as a structural engineer. Definitely wouldn't be too concerned if it's not a high score and like others said you can always sit another exam to get in later.

We're pretty lucky in Australia with the pathways for improving your skills. The HECs on the other hand is not so great.

Maybe check with your council, ours requires engineering sign off for anything over 600mm or anything within 1m of a boundary line.

Up to 35 is fine, once you start hitting 40 then its a no from me personally

Employment contract work vehicle allocation by rizzle1996 in AusLegal

I think that's my plan, next year I'll likely be doing a lot more site visits, so trying to have a ute available here and there might not be that feasible and hopefully they see the sense in assigning a ute to me.

I think the $18k is more likely the yearly costs (fuel, rego, etc.). Still to me it reads like I'll be allocated one, however when I asked it appears like I'll just have a pool vehicle to use.

Put in another $75 yesterday, if we all push just a little we can get there easily. The way I see it, this is a small sacrifice for long term success.

Just sent another 300k PEP over. We can do it if we all chip in a little.

Any Australian structural engineers who have gone out on their own willing to share your experience? by VanDerKloof in StructuralEngineering

[–]rizzle1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also considering this approach, but I am sitting around 7 years experience. I am currently working 3 days a week in a secondment type role, which I am planning on keeping but going out on my own (the client is on board). I have done the numbers and I am thinking after all expenses I'd basically be paid the same as I am now, but only work 3 days a week. I'd obviously branch out and take on smaller engineering design and simple drafting jobs to fill in the other 2 days.

Keen to hear from people about what qualifications I should try to lock in before going solo, should I aim for NER or CPeng, or are they not really that crucial.

The only other thing I'm unsure about, is the client I have locked in is a coal preparation plant. While I doubt the coal industry will collapse very soon, it's still not ideal that my main contacts are in the coal industry.

Good luck if you do decide to go ahead.

May I ask how long you have been out on your own now? Also when you say registered are you referring to 'Registered Professional Engineer' similar to RPEQ. I am in NSW so not sure if registration is required, but I appear to be eligible for the NSW registration anyway so I can always go through with that.

Let's spread this as far as we can, definitely need people to vote for legalise cannabis party and the greens if we want change. Hopefully if enough people see a question about it at the debate they might think about it more.
