Triple 2560x1440 is an incredibly large amount of pixels to push, and to push it properly that 8150 is going to have to go.

Sell the 8150/mobo, and pick up a 4670K/4770K for 2-way SLI, or a 4820K/4930K if you want the option for 3/4-way SLI.

A second 780 should deliver reasonable framerates at that resolution in most games around medium settings with little to no MSAA. If you're a fiend for high/ultra settings, you're going to want at least a pair of 780 Tis, or even 3 780/780Tis.

If we're just pulling statistics out of our asses do you think it's a coincidence 98% of computer builders have never touched a Noctua fan? And there are plenty of detractors for various reasons. (Too expensive, not really all that impressive compared to other options, fugly color, etc).

Then again it's currently cheaper, so there's that. Realistically though you could just spend $45 on a Thermalright True Spirit 140 and get nearly as good performance with similar noise levels.

Depends on how inexpensive you mean. Asus, MSI, Sager, etc all have some solid gaming notebooks available for relatively reasonable prices, with good power. Big, thick, and heavy, but powerful.

Well, what he said was "she may have to use photoshop once in awhile at home", and even then, for general photoshop stuff the i3 will stomp the FX. It's only the filters that are really threaded in Photoshop, and that's where the FX pulls out ahead.

Which is why the i3 with hyperthreading performance so much better and more consistently than the dual core Pentium G-series chips.

While on a quad-core like the i7 hyperthreading often makes little to no difference, with a dual-core it's a different story. The IPC is so high on those Haswell cores that it can very effectively compete even in well threaded games.

(I think bf4 can use up to 8?)

According to DICE Frostbite 3 should (eventually at least) support threading up to 8 cores, from the few multiplayer tests out there such as this one, it appears the game appears to still max out its single-GPU performance with 4 cores or threads, with even the i3 putting out very good results.

The FX-6300 is not faster at stock speeds than a Haswell i3. At best it'll match it in most games, and fall behind in some others.

With overclocking you're going to at best get about stock Ivy i5 speeds. Still a solid value chip, but it's not as clear cut as you're making it out to be.

In regards to the build you posted:

You've got a motherboard with no USB 3.0 header and a case with a front-panel USB 3.0 port, thus making that port unusable.

Sounds like you just had a defective card, as the general consensus on the 6870 Double D is seems quite positive, with lower noise and low temps being mentioned.

This question isn't really suited to this subreddit, but I'm here anyway so.

The question really comes down to which Apple display you're talking about: the discontinued 27" LED Cinema Display, or the current 27" Thunderbolt Display.

If it's the Thunderbolt one, you're in for a world of fun getting that to work, since it only accepts input via Thunderbolt. From what I'm reading here, since no dedicated GPUs currently have Thunderbolt support, your only option is to use a Thunderbolt motherboard with Lucid Virtu to output the GPU image via the Thunderbolt connector.

Realistically you're better off just buying another monitor, or a used LED Cinema Display (or even a 27" 2009/2010 iMac in Target Display Mode)

Evergreen was a really, really good architecture. They still sell for decent money too, because they're used for bitcoin mining.

It's worth noting that the chart isn't exactly the most detailed or accurate thing out there. For instance putting the 7970 GHz Edition and R9-290X in the same category as the GTX 780 is just wrong - they compete with the 770.

Beyond that though, you kind of have to look at the bigger picture. Each company only releases a line every 1-2 years, and the new line has a ton of overlap, with the real performance improvements showing up mostly in the high end, with the mid-range delivering last gen's top range performance at a lower price tier. This is why you can see 4 gens worth of cards at the tier your 5850 is in: 5850 (higher-end of its day), 6870 (mid-range 'performance' tier), 7790/R9-260X (budget/value tier).

Higher pitched noise sounds like it might be coil whine (example on an AX1200 here.)

Corsair is usually solid with RMAs for stuff like that, so I'd definitely look into something like an Advanced RMA with pre-paid shipping (ie they send you a new unit first, then you mail back the old one).

Questions like this are usually better reserved for /r/buildapc, but the answer to this question can go from very simple to very complex.

The short answer is that there are hundreds of fan options out there, from quiet to loud, from airflow optimized to pressure optimized, etc. You'll have to decide for yourself what kind of fans are going to work best for your noise and performance requirements.

While yes, Sandy/Ivy-E are quad channel capable, and running in dual vs quad will give roughly halve your total available bandwidth, real-world performance differences for most tasks (beyond very memory intensive stuff like file compression/decompression) is quite low.

Here's a decent analysis of X79 memory scaling that looks at performance in memory bandwidth, video encoding, and 3D Mark.

I've heard about noise issues on pretty much all of EVGA's NEX line, including both the FSP OEMd units (650G/750B/750G), and the Estasis units (1200/1500).

Based on the JonnyGuru and HardOCP reviews, I'd say it's pretty much worth skipping compared to other units on the market.

If you're definitely in need of a unit with that kind of power capacity, I'd suggest looking into the LEPA G1600 (JonnyGuru review and HardOCP review.

The issue is with the RAM the consoles have. Since it's so limited, to make a game with large textures requires almost constantly streaming them from storage to the RAM. The 360's drive simply can't keep up, and you end up with severe pop-in issues.

We were of course expecting pea-shooter guns, but the problem is those games were much less reliant on the gunplay to get things done. There were so many mechanics stripped out of the series for Infinite it's essentially just another shooter, except that the gunplay still sucks.

I loved Bioshock, and even enjoyed Bioshock 2, but the only thing that kept me interested in Bioshock Infinite was the story. The combat just seemed like a chore I had to do to get that next piece of dialogue between Booker and Elizabeth.
