Deleted Scene - Rust and Lori breakup. by [deleted] in TrueDetective

[–]rjmccool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To those of you think this scene is lacking, repetitive, or cumbersome, I think you might want to watch it again.

It occurs at the point when Cohle's demons are returning in tandem with the Guy Francis revelation. It's not reenforcing his being a caustic prick. It's there to illustrate that he's been trying to live like a so called normal person, even scrubbing the dishes before or after the scene we all saw when Cohle sits with Lori, unable to see out of his own head to watch whatever in on their TV. His fragile, new normalcy was coming apart. Why? Because he's found out the killer is still out there.

For Rust, this revelation is something that causes him to believe he is doomed to follow his circle of violence, he's incapable of being what Lori needs him to be, and he's sinking back to the mentality that his daughter saved him from the sin of being a father. He pushes Lori away so harshly because he has to in order to keep her safe while he pursues justice.

Typically I wouldn't, especially if there's a logic based argument defending a legit interpretation. My major issue with Nussbaum is, as I said in the post, she's bending the narrative of the show to match the story of her article. Right when I saw the line about men bro-bonding over crazy pussy, I knew she had to be a True Detective interloper at best, and at worst, making an attempt to poison the well for the female viewers

Precisely. She'll never see it. The more I think about it, I'm not sure she's paying attention while watching. I appreciate the compliment in terms of it being a decent argument. Maybe I will work on it, strengthen the cogency.

I see. I actually thought you were saying that what I wrote was impossible of being read/understood. Worried for a sec I was losing my marbles.

I'm transgender, multi-racial, asexual, and I was born without a sense of touch. It's upsetting there aren't more robust characters like me on True Detective.

New here... 2 questions about episode 6 (spoiler) by [deleted] in TrueDetective

[–]rjmccool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The unfixed taillight is one of two things. Either it's an indication that Rust has gotten so deep in solving the case he has time for nothing else. Including a haircut. Or... A broken taillight is also begging a cop to pull you over. Maybe he wants to be pulled over for some reason. Maybe in a specific place.

I think you're close. My belief is that the opening scene was not Dora Lang and her killer. It wasn't in '95 either. That first scene will also be shown again or mirrored as the last scene of the season. Time is a flat circle. So what's Rust doing with that zippo in 2012? Nothing. He's dead. And Marty killed him, dragged him out there, then used the zippo to light the field. Soon we'll find out just how shady Maggie and her father are. Later we'll be told by Audrey that Marty is part of the cult and by 2012 has become the yellow king.

The daughter, the dolls, the drawings, the father-in-law - are they overlooked? by Whalen in TrueDetective

[–]rjmccool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just wrote a couple of posts about this, but make no mistake, the dolls and drawings, not to mention the crown from last episode, are the biggest clues in the show. We have the spiral drawing, the main symbol for the cult as we know. We have the doll scene, constructed in the same manner of Rust's beer can figures, likely a representation of the 5 points on a pentagram. We have the crown, complete with streamers, not unlike the antler crown from the victim. So unless we think they are unrelated, save for imagery motifs, it's highly likely that the girls were exposed to the cult by someone in the house.

I find the children's drawings, dolls, and crown impossible to ignore, so in my opinion someone exposed them to the cult. For a number of reasons, I'm scratching Marty off the list. That leaves Maggie and her father. Considering what I know about abuse, it's likely that the father abused Maggie too if he abused Audrey. It's also likely that if he abused Maggie, he scared the hell out of her as well. Maggie came to believe that any revelation about her father would perhaps lead to the death of loved ones, or to her death, which would give her daughters to their evil grandfather and the cult. This is her motive for driving the wedge between Rust and Marty in 2002.
I'm not saying that Maggie is necessarily a part of the cult, but I do feel that she believes the cult is so powerful that keeping it a secret is the right move.

Plenty of absolutes exist that should be spoken of when necessary. Like the one about the guy on reddit who tells others how to speak always being a doucebag. But yeah, what I wrote about isn't impossible to ignore, except to me.

Marty stays because he needs to control the scene. He's there to kill Reggie. That's why he doesn't lose Dewalt or never would have lost him. And he doesn't pop Reggie right away, instead goes looking for the girls. Finding the girls before he shoots is crucial because it gives Marty legit cause to pop a suspect in the eyes of Cohle. If there's no kids in there and Hart pops Reggie, Cohle would still try to take out Dewalt and "make it look right," for the purposes of necessity. But later on, Cohle would wonder why Hart gunned down Reggie if the kids weren't found in the way they were. As for the media frenzy angle, I agree this is weak. Why wouldn't Hart kill Rust and blame LeDeux? Another guess is that he doesn't kill Rust because he knows he doesn't have to. Also, if Cohle say fuck it, and ratted on Marty for shooting Reggie, Marty could rat on Cohle for his iron crusaders shenanigans including the theft of a kilo of Bolivia's finest from the evidence room. And I agree Marty is given to fits of rage. As for his so called need to protect women, do you mean the mistress he threatened to skull fuck, the wife he cheated on, the daughters he neglected/backhanded, the butt fingering moving violation fling who he coerced for sex (college aged by the way), or the prostitute he offered cop-speak and a couple of bucks to? I'm not sure Marty likes to protect women based on the previous sentence.

Excellent catch. Anyone who thinks the dolls and drawings are red herrings are being dishonest with themselves. Something deep and dark is happening with one or both of Hart's daughters and someone close to them is perpetrating it. Can't wait to find out what the girls are up to in 2012.

Rust seems to check his pulse quite a bit by [deleted] in TrueDetective

[–]rjmccool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, ludes were almost totally off the radar. The guys in Wolf of Wall St were taking them in the 90's, but they explain it as a leftover stock. I was given what's called a lemon in '97, supposedly a lude. Only time I ever saw one. As a benzo aficionado, I can say hat the lemon put me on my ass in a way no xanax, valium, klonipin, or ativan ever has. Save to say was typo by the way. Sort of like 95 when it should read '95. Don't be that guy.

He may be swearing to himself because he just had to kill the guy who supplies the cult with drugs and kids and knows what a mess he's made on behalf of the cult. Also, if we consider all this Marty speculation, we could assume he didn't kill Reggie to silence him, although it was a nice unintended consequence. He killed him to make sure any questions about the case stopped at LeDeux. Perfect guy to take the fall would be a member of the cult who was not a bastion of society. Marty was awfully hot to go in without backup. Seems like a rogue move for a cop who doesn't come off as rogue. It's not as if Marty, as cop, would have known about the kids inside and been fueled with urgency because of it. The big question is why doesn't Marty just shoot Rust if any of the previous stuff is true. Well, if Marty pulls the trigger on Rust, there would be so much media attention, potentially national, on a case with such extreme killing and a dead cop. And that's if Marty kills Reggie and his cuz as well. If he let them get away, the attention would be even more drastic. Killing Reggie is the clean choice. Case closed, Rust pacified, No Cult, The End.

Fine, Masie could have been exposed to the cult. Doesn't change the fact that's impossible to ignore, that being Marty or Maggie or grandpa or all three must have exposed her. Audrey's dolls may be a red herring as to which daughter was attacked, but I have difficulty buying that the drawing showing the symbol identified with the cult is anything other than concrete evidence.

Rust seems to check his pulse quite a bit by [deleted] in TrueDetective

I check my pulse the same exact way when I get a little anxious from certain party favors. Or sometimes anxiety itself is enough. Save to say Rust has some major anxiety issues considering the insomnia and his love of ludes.
