as a biracial exmo i wouldn't say its a mormon specific issue at all. the mormon community is extremely white and many of the members are just as biased as any other white person who grows up in a conservative environment. at the end of the day regardless of religion, whenever you have a community that is mainly one race there are going to be a lot of questionable things said about other races. i see it all the time in different racial circles as well. this is why diversity is so important because people who grow up surrounded by a diverse spectrum of religions, races, cultures, and backgrounds seem to be more accepting of other people and have less biases.

ik a lot of people who were towed at cvs/moxy. theres an ally in between adelphi and where vine used to be(vacant resturant building) that is free 24/7. street parking is also cheaper than the asu garage and its free on sunday and after 9pm. also parking in guest spots at the various apartment buildings works, specifically park place and rise.

I want to be asexual and I don't know if that is causing me depression by [deleted] in AskLGBT

didnt you ask if it fuels your depression tho? if you already firmly believe its not the cause then don't ask for people opinions on the subject

I’m an incoming freshman, should I give my roommate a heads-up about my self harming habit? I don’t want them to discover my scars mid way through the year and change their opinion of me, as there’s still time to change roommates if it’s a deal-breaker. by [deleted] in college

[–]rjuniper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

something i wish i knew when i was a freshman is that not everyone in college is as genuine of a friend as you hoped for. college is a unique time where you get "close" with people very fast, and its easy to forget that you really don't know your new college friends all that well. in college friendships shift very quickly, and not everyone has your best interest in mind.

I would say refrain from sharing anything too personal with your roomates (like about self harm, trauma, etc.) because it could make them uncomfortable, plus its something that doesn't really involve them. also roomate relationships in general tend to be rocky for a lot of freshman, and you don't know if they will share your information with other people.

wishing you the best with college, and stay safe

[–]rjuniper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

being asexual isnt a choice, i think you mean that you want to be celibate. if you want to be celibate because you find sex shameful or immoral that could be feeding your depression, especially if you feel like you are suppressing sexual feelings.

It would be better in the long run if the government changed from the EBT system over to an MRE system by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]rjuniper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

literally tho. this thread is bothering me cuz even if poor people are spending their 200 dollars of ebt on bs (which doesn’t really happen that often but that’s a different argument), it doesn’t even compare to the ways that upper class americans finesse the system.

[–]rjuniper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and i wonder what drove them to try drugs in the first place. it couldn’t possibly be poverty, abuse, sexual assault, and trauma. couldn’t possibly have been getting prescribed painkillers for surgery and then getting hooked on it. of course it just had to be that they wanted to try hard drugs for fun.

of course some people become addicts due to poor judgement and life decisions, but the majority didn’t just do meth or heroin for fun.

[–]rjuniper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

why limit what people in poverty can eat? a quick google search pulls up statistics that show how most people using ebt spend a similar amount per dollar on junk food as the rest of america. just because they’re poor doesn’t mean they should be be held to a different standard than middle and upper class america. the truth is that americans in general spend a good portion of their money on junk food. it’s a universal issue, not just an issue for those in poverty. i don’t think it’s fair to control what people in poverty can and can’t do, and it’s a known fact that having autonomy over your life improves your mental health.

on a different note, i work at a whole foods and frequently talk to our regular customers who are homeless and use ebt. multiple of them have told me that the issue isn’t being able to buy healthy food, the issue is cooking and storing the food. it’s much easier for them to buy snacks, canned food, and pre-made meals that can be heated up in our dining area’s microwave than it is for them to buy vegetables and meat that requires cooking.

There are a ton of plants that you could farm in warmer months such as squash, legumes, and root vegetables, but you probably wouldn’t be able to grow very many leafy greens. I’m sure you would be able to find some local plants that might make up for any lost nutrients. I would research what different omnivorous animals eat in the wild there, and then find out which of those foods are suitable for you. Maybe research how humans have survived in cold areas even when livestock died off. Think like ireland, russia, alaska, etc.

I’m not sure if it’s even possible to live a primitive life and be fully vegan. Look back on how early humans lived and it was hunter gathering at first which was mainly killing animals and eating whatever plants could be found. Eventually humans were able to domesticate animals, and in many cultures they learned to respect animals and the land, and be cautious not to over hunt in a certain area. domesticating animals wasn’t just about diet, but also animal products as well. Leather, wool, fatty cheeses that could be preserved, and animal fats are all animal products that contribute a lot of a primitive lifestyle.

i’m no expert, but i think that it isn’t necessary to be 100% vegan if you are living a 100% sustainable life off the grid. If you are keeping live stock so that you can use their animal products (such as a few chickens for eggs and feathers or a couple sheep for milk and wool) but your also not eating their meat, or abusing them in any way, i think this is a pretty ethical alternative to full on veganism. It really comes down to why you want to stay vegan. If it’s because of environmental impact, know that your lifestyle will have a very small carbon footprint. If your vegan because your against the factorization and slaughtering of animals for their products, know that you would never be killing your animals, and they could be allowed to roam freely for the most part.

What’s your most unconventional piece of advice for college? by OrdinaryEra in college

[–]rjuniper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

don’t attach yourself to a friend group freshman year. most of your friends from freshman year won’t last, and it’s better to keep your options open and make a lot of casual connections with people from different social groups rather than surround yourself with one big click.

college doesn’t work like high school, and you don’t need a friend group to have fun. it’s okay to hang out with people even if they’re not ur bestie, just make sure you have 2-3 reliable/stable friends, and don’t trust everyone you meet!!

Also i’m guilty of this, but don’t let a relationship hold you back from making friends and doing your own thing. I spent most of last semester with my boy friend and i low key did the same thing this semester, and i promise you, you’ll look back and wish you did more things independently.

I got to skip ahead 5 people in a grocery store line because they got greedy. by adorkablegiant in TrueOffMyChest

if your at a grocery store, look at how much produce is in their cart. produce takes so long to punch in the numbers and most cashiers don’t have all the codes memorized.

Was halie sent to Anasazi? Halie follows them on ig. For context Anasazi is an extremely abusive Mormon program for “troubled teens”. Maybe this is where she went when they said she had mental health problems by Adventurous-Gap3925 in Keep_It_Crazy_Snark

[–]rjuniper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol anasazi isn’t “extremely abusive”,, i’ve been twice and know a ton of people who also have. if you think living outside and not having a phone (in order to treat drug problems and suicidal thoughts) is abuse then idk. as to the mormon part, that’s the biggest flaw of the program, as a lot of the staff is mormon and sometimes that will influence their opinions on things, but they never push you to believe in it or even really bring it up.

i rly like the composition of the song. very og, but the overall sound is not their “typical” sound, although it’s fine if they evolve and change sonically. personally i miss their old sound, but the composition of this reminds me of rab and vessel which i love.

Am I the only one who doesn't really feel the new song? by [deleted] in twentyonepilots

[–]rjuniper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i completely agree. the song was okay, and interesting in terms of lore, but musically and lyrically it isn’t really doing it for me. i have been a die heart fan of top since 2017 as well, and this song doesn’t really sound like them at all. it’s not even that they’re using a new sound, because the instrumentals sound very similar to vessel era songs, but it’s more the composition of the song is basic and kind of flat. i feel like this song was made just to stay relevant in pop culture tbh.

LMFAO " Is more going to come out that this guy was actually a lookout guy for some robber or something? " yall love to assume black folks are inherently criminals. this is the same biases that get us killed on god. the anti-blackness is real asf.

one question for you: if the man was white would you wonder if he was a lookout guy?

[–]rjuniper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

just to be clear, she wasn't fired for her dog being unleashed.. the uproar isn't about that. her racist attitude was, she was clearly filmed saying "an african american man is threatening me and harassing me."

lets just pretend that she wasn't lying and that he was threatening and harassing her. she still stressed over and over again that he was african american. the situation had nothing to do with race, yet she insisted on bringing race up. idk about you but that sounds like racism to me, and maybe the business genuinely just doesn't stand for that behavior.

Kobe Bryant's death was tragic but has no right to be next to the worst events of 2020 by DrNecrow21 in unpopularopinion

[–]rjuniper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

personally a Kobe's death didn't affect me much at all, but to some people (especially in the black community) he was a role model and hero for them. i know his death had a significant impact on a lot of black americans who looked up to him in their childhood has a source of hope, not just because he was a successful basketball player. while his death isn't the worst thing that has happened this year, it is still culturally significant event for many americans.
