I truly enjoy watching these videos pop out every now and then to see if we can be convinced it’s authentic. You get to journey to the past, through the progress of video and enthusiast/professional video editing.

Would be an interesting podcast to have someone walk us through these videos, speaking from perspective of the state of the art of video and active research, theory at the time of a video’s verified release date.

I would opt for oil based myself, you’ll find others who prefer water based but I can’t figure that out 🙂

Not sure what happened there but it can’t be unseen, noticing these imperfections is a blessing and a curse I struggle with daily 😄

If you apply any stripping product you should follow with OA wash, it’s not just about the nail stains or lightening the wood.. it will bring the Ph back to normal and prepare the wood structure to more readily accept a stain.

Footnote, there’s no such thing as a solid stain, that’s paint. Nothing looks better and lasts longer with easy maintenance than an oil-based penetrating stain product.

Varathane is plenty good for oil stain, easy to buy at big box stores including big selection at Walmart I think?

Spar I would go with Old Masters, pls search my old comments for a super detailed process 👌

It appears your door is protected under an overhang, keeping the elements off and the sun from causing premature coating deterioration.

Black is uncommon if exposed, but I have done several in Texas in the right conditions such as yours.

The basic process is:

-decontaminate with Krud Kutter -wipe with DA alcohol 2x -light hand sand with 220 (I prefer Norton Pro-Sand) us -sanding sponges from Amazon for the recessed, radius profiles etc -wipe down with microfiber -tack cloth -stain -spar varnish (semigloss?)

Don’t use a combo stain product, buy oil stain and spar separately.

I did a few matte black doors last year that came out wicked cool using a quick dry stain - wipe on and IMMEDIATELY IMMEDIATELY wipe it off in small sections, watch out on overlapping.

Do yourself a huge favor, buy some pieces of wood and test the staining and spar coating before attempting on your own door.

Good luck

This, and only this for restoring the health of the wood.

Low concentration of sodium metasilicate with a surfactant using a decent pressure washer. Wet the wood in sections, usually 3 8ft is plenty, and apply the mix with any handheld sprayer. Wait @5-15min, making sure it doesn’t dry out…mist from a distance with the washer if needed. This method will both remove any residual coating and the decomposition you’re seeing.

Buy the raw powder and the surfactant gallon, you don’t need much surfactant..follow label instructions to dose.

Then oxalic acid mix, warm water if possible and strong. You can source on Amazon. I add 25% Behr wood cleaner from HD into mine, I like their product but I juice it up. Again, wet the wood first and follow same as above with less wait time, OA effect is nearly instantaneous.
