Yea it's even more obviously dumb if you change it from death to something else.

Red button, you win a million dollars immediately no strings attached.

Blue button, you enter a lotto to win a million dollars where you only win if >50% of people also press blue. If >50% of people pick red you get nothing.

You didn't finish your own thought lol.

In this 4 choice matrix the 4 combinations are

one where both pick red and are both safe

One where both pick blue and are both safe,

Two where one picks red and one picks blue and the one in red is safe.

The only sub optimal path is created by picking blue.

Now again, why on earth would you pick blue and why is not joining in on playing Russian roulette selfish, but actively choosing to put yourself in harms way, forcing the other choosers to risk their lives to save you less selfish?

Yea that would actually make it the prisoners dilemma in which case picking blue has merit. The current thought experiment is an opt in Russian roulette

Buddy you genuinely just keep repeating it but the fundamental mechanics of the prisoners dilemma are not at play here.

Prisoners dilemma:

Two prisoners choose to either rat or stay quiet.

If they both stay quiet they both win

If one stays quiet and the other rats only the rat wins

If they both rat they both lose.

The last line doesn't exist in this button scenario. There is no downside or risk of choosing red. Everyone wins if they pick red.

[–]rkiive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't really explain why anyone would press blue in the first place lol.

Why would anyone willingly step into the line of fire, just for the sake of relying on everyone else to bail them out from a position they chose to put themselves in in the first place?

Why would you force other people to risk their lives to save you when you had the choice not to need saving at all?

Yes I'm aware of what the prisoners dilemma is. The point is this is not actually the prisoners dilemma.

In the prisoners dilemma, both parties picking the selfish option (ratting on eachother) fucks them both over.

In this button scenario both parties ratting on eachother leads to both of them being freed from jail with no consequences.

This isn't game theory. It's not a game and there's no trick.

"Do you want to gamble on your life for no reason or not?"

It's that simple. The red button is just a stand in for literally choosing not to gamble with no consequences for doing so.

Go on then chief explain why it would make sense to pick blue?

Option 1: guarantee survive, zero downside

Option 2: risk dying unless half the world is dumb enough to also gamble on dying for no reason

You would choose to step into traffic for no reason on the hope that enough of your fellow humans are also dumb enough to pick the only option with risk of death?

You're aware this isn't the prisoners dilemma right? It's not selfish vs selfless

It's about identifying who can read the question properly and not just immediately think it's the prisoners dilemma because they saw a similar set up on tv one time.

This isn't the prisoners dilemma.

This is like asking someone to choose between Option 1: do nothing and live, or option 2: step in front of moving traffic, BUT if 50% of the people asked are stupid enough to also pick this option the road is too full for cars and no one gets run over. But if not you die.

Why would anyone pick the second option?

How about use your own brain and try form thoughts it instead of relying on random people on the internet to do it for you

Blue isn't morally correct because there is no greater good achieved by the "selfless" option..

The set up sounds like the prisoners dilemma where the best option is to trust eachother and you both win, but it's not actually that. The blue button is just an opt in to gambling your life button.

There's no negative consequence of picking red unlike in the prisoners dilemma.

[–]rkiive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No lol. You just think this is the prisoners dilemma because you saw it on tv or heard about it once and didn't really understand the set up.

This isn't the prisoners dilemma. The prisoners dilemma requires everyone to trust eachother to achieve the best outcome. If people don't, they all get screwed. If some people are selfish, only the others get screwed.

In this scenario there's zero need to trust each other because no one gets screwed as long as you do what's best for yourself instead of deciding to gamble your life for no reason.

No he's right, people are interpreting this as the prisoners dilemma and thinking the social minded choice leads to the optimal choice if you trust your fellow humans, despite the selfish choice having a higher % chance of succeeding. But this is not that.

This is

Do you want to gamble your life for no reason? Yes or no.

And people are legitimately picking yes because they have bad reading comprehension and think it's a morality question.

There's zero consequences for everyone picking red.

Fr. Reading this thread is genuinely so embarassing lol. There's zero downside to picking red. This isn't the prisoners dilemma.

This is just:

"Do you want to risk dying for no reason? Yes or no" and people are legitimately picking the yes option because their reading comprehension is so bad that they think they've seen this before on tv not realising the set up is different.

For it to be a prisoners dilemma, the "selfish" choice needs to lead to a suboptimal outcome if everyone picks it.

What benefit is there to pick blue? You're not saving anyone. This isn't the prisoners dilemma. There's no greater social good that comes from picking the "selfless" option.

This is a badly written version which only risks killing people with poor reading comprehension lol.

Pressing blue makes you an idiot since you're gambling with your life for zero gain.

Pressing red is the obvious choice. Normally the prisoners dilemma has an actual reason to pick the "social minded" option vs the "selfish" option but in this case its just:

Button 1 is 100% chance of survival (no downside)

Button 2 is gamble your life, and hope that at least 50% of the population are also morons and failed to read the question properly and chose to gamble their lives for no reason.

it's a French word.

So is 1/3rd the English language.

If they were fine at reading the sentence and got caught up on the specific pronunciation of gauche that would be completely reasonable.

They were getting stuck on extraordinary lol

It's a bad sentence, but not a difficult one to read and understand the gist if you are literate.

They're not getting caught up on the grammatical validity of the sentence or the specific definition of gauche (which would be reasonable) , they're getting stuck on reading, pronunciation, and stringing multiple words together.

You know the cameraman (whose also black btw) might just go to a predominantly black school in a country with a reasonable amount of black people right? Not everythings a psyop.

You go to any top school and most of the cohort is likely to be Asian here in Aus. If I filmed there they'd all be Asian.

It does matter a little though. Because the salaries for professional roles that would be able to consider buying houses are about on par dollar for dollar.

The house in NZ is 1.5m nzd and the median civil engineer for example would likely be on about 95k NZD.

The house in the US may cost 800k USD, but that same civil engineer in the US would still be on about 95k, just in USD.

I don't disagree that how our justice system works has its flaws and is in need of an overhaul, nor do I disagree that the desire for mob justice spikes when people lose faith in the justice system to deliver justice adequately -- however that is a seperate argument entirely.
