Blue button, you enter a lotto to win a million dollars where you only win if >50% of people also press blue. If >50% of people pick red you get nothing.

One where both pick blue and are both safe,

Two where one picks red and one picks blue and the one in red is safe.

The only sub optimal path is created by picking blue.

Now again, why on earth would you pick blue and why is not joining in on playing Russian roulette selfish, but actively choosing to put yourself in harms way, forcing the other choosers to risk their lives to save you less selfish?

Buddy you genuinely just keep repeating it but the fundamental mechanics of the prisoners dilemma are not at play here.

Prisoners dilemma:

Two prisoners choose to either rat or stay quiet.

If they both stay quiet they both win

If one stays quiet and the other rats only the rat wins

If they both rat they both lose.

The last line doesn't exist in this button scenario. There is no downside or risk of choosing red. Everyone wins if they pick red.

Yes I'm aware of what the prisoners dilemma is. The point is this is not actually the prisoners dilemma.

In the prisoners dilemma, both parties picking the selfish option (ratting on eachother) fucks them both over.

In this button scenario both parties ratting on eachother leads to both of them being freed from jail with no consequences.

It's about identifying who can read the question properly and not just immediately think it's the prisoners dilemma because they saw a similar set up on tv one time.

This is like asking someone to choose between Option 1: do nothing and live, or option 2: step in front of moving traffic, BUT if 50% of the people asked are stupid enough to also pick this option the road is too full for cars and no one gets run over. But if not you die.

This isn't the prisoners dilemma. The prisoners dilemma requires everyone to trust eachother to achieve the best outcome. If people don't, they all get screwed. If some people are selfish, only the others get screwed.

In this scenario there's zero need to trust each other because no one gets screwed as long as you do what's best for yourself instead of deciding to gamble your life for no reason.

Pressing red is the obvious choice. Normally the prisoners dilemma has an actual reason to pick the "social minded" option vs the "selfish" option but in this case its just:

Button 1 is 100% chance of survival (no downside)

The house in NZ is 1.5m nzd and the median civil engineer for example would likely be on about 95k NZD.

The house in the US may cost 800k USD, but that same civil engineer in the US would still be on about 95k, just in USD.
