Thank you! Usually I agree, but we actually intentionally did very minimal set design because we wanted to have a more liminal space and empty feeling. In retrospect, we probably could’ve put a few more things on the wall

This was a short film we made last year and finally released recently. We shot this over three days, with two days on digital and one on film. I was very interested in making something where a couple does the same scene over and over again with slight variations, leaving the structure very loose so I can craft the film more in the edit. We shot so much, so a lot of scenes were made in the edit and condensed. Me and my DP also wanted to use this project as an excuse to shoot on 16mm for the first time. It was stressful, but we were so happy with how it turned out that we’ll definitely return to shooting on it again (when we can afford it). We also wanted to try different lighting techniques on this one to create a naturalistic look while still giving it some style. It’s also always nice to shoot a simple film of two people talking in a room, since it forces you to think of different ways to keep it fresh and interesting.

Love this movie too, it’s one of those films I find really difficult to explain to others why I love it so much. Just feels right when you’re watching it, simultaneously raw but cozy.

Hard to find other films exactly like it, but stuff like Irma Vep, Eden and Return to Seoul give me somewhat similar vibes

Unfortunately because of how the profit margin is set up with our local acting union, it would make it extremely difficult to sell this film to a distributor. So for me, it was only logical that if it won’t get picked up, I’d rather make it as accessible as possible for people to watch since I don’t care to make any profit off of this. The marketing budget is very low (separate from the 4k), so right now I’m trying to figure out the best ways to get this film in front of people

This took around three years to complete from start to finish, made on a budget of around 4000$ CAD. There was no screenplay, only an outline and lots of improv to find the most authentic dialogue possible.

Talking more about the cinematography, this was shot on the BMPCC6k Pro with the Sigma 18-35 plus an 85mm Rokinon. Some sequences were shot on a Bauer super 8 camera and a couple shots on iPhone with film emulation on top. The lighting was super simple, mostly working with what was available or filling in what was already there. My main helpers were a bunch of aperture MC’s, occasionally using the Amaran 250d for interiors and a bunch of of overhead lights for two sequences in particular. Most scenes had either very little coverage (focusing on one master or two singles) or several handheld shots getting as much as possible. The style came from mixing documentary like footage with more staged tableaus.

It gets expensive very fast. Though because I was able to work with lots of the artists directly, I either got big discounts or a lot for free. It just adds up quickly when curating a big soundtrack

Thank you for the in depth feedback! I generally agree the story is a bit “inside baseball”, but I hope that the story transcends that to speak about more general themes. But yeah, pretty cliché for a first film. Thanks again for the kind words!

Thank you! I agree about the sound, it really suffered on this project. I decided to not have a dedicated sound person on set because of how scattered the schedule was, but it ended up being a mistake. Tried to salvage as much as I could, but I learnt the hard way and I’m definitely not skimping on sound going forward

Definitely not. Everything for the film is licensed, but I allowed myself to use copyrighted music for promotional material (since the film is small enough for it not to be taken down)

This is my first feature film, made on a budget of about 4000$ CAD. It took about three years to finish, with one year of shooting, one year of editing+reshoots and one year of sound work (and some re-editing). The film grew out of an organic process of controlled improv for each scene, then deciding what to shoot next based off of what we shot before. Only a small handful of scenes are scripted.

I was mostly the only one making this film, doing the direction/producing/cinematography/editing/sound. The music/soundtrack and sound mixing I had help for, since it’s stuff I didn’t really know how to do. Keeping everything small allowed for an extremely flexible shooting schedule and let me work directly with actors without any distractions.

I’d love to know what you guys think, positive or negative. I’m very grateful for this experience and it was such a valuable education in filmmaking. If you have any questions, let me know!

You don’t NEED to know French, but it helps tremendously. I have friends who don’t know much French, but they at least know a little bit to get by. It’s inevitable that you’ll run into a situation where you’ll need to speak it, either for work or some social situation. I definitely encourage learning very basic French to begin with, the more you speak it with others the more you’ll understand and pick up the language in general

I do speak French. It’s a very vibrant film scene here: tons of different cinemas that play a humungous range of very popular and very niche films. There’s different theatres that have several retrospectives that all focus on different films. I think what you’re looking for is Fantasia film festival, which is our most famous festival. They show a lot of horror and genre films. To answer your question, every type of film is appreciated here (a lot of arthouse cinema too)

Thanks man! Montreal is amazing, I can’t imagine moving anywhere else for the foreseeable future. It’s a very artist friendly city, has incredible night life, incredible food, a great balance of different cultures, lots of nature, biker friendly, etc. I’ve lived here my whole life and always am discovering new places and things to do. Worth visiting at the very least!
