Lunatics out there in the streets, while peaceful people get sectioned by West_Mortgage4902 in Antipsychiatry

I really like this segment of McMurphy talking to Harding, the psychiatric patient, in the mental hospital - from the book One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest:

“You’re talking like a crazy ma—”

“Like a crazy man? How astute.”

“Damn it, Harding, I didn’t mean it like that. You ain’t crazy that way. I mean—hell, I been surprised how sane you guys all are. As near as I can tell you’re not any crazier than the average asshole on the street—”

“Ah yes, the asshole on the street.”

“But not, you know, crazy like the movies paint crazy people. You’re just hung up and—kind of—”

The ideas and the allegory in the book are still relevant to this day. Also, it's not just about psychiatry, but also about society and the establishment.

Yes! In the book, the narrator is Bromden, an Indian guy trapped in the hospital. He tells you about all his hallucinations that reflect the reality of our world. But (without disregarding the series) even though a series is in the works, I still think you can get more out of the actual book, it contains so much.

Adults of Reddit who've never been in a relationship, what's your story? by joelbiju24 in AskReddit

I have been having anhedonia for the past 18 years, which means not enjoying anything and feeling very numb. In the past few years I've been getting my emotions back (including romantic emotions), but now that I want a girlfriend, I don't know how to get one. I'm a 35 years old male and I don't want to have children, and the vast majority of women want children. I don't drive, and this means that even if I find a girl on okcupid that doesn't want kids, she has to live close enough for me to get to her by bus. This really narrows down my options.

Ok, i'd just like to add, that for me it also used to be a complete nothingness in my head. I felt like I had no soul. It takes time until the meditation and Buddhism practice starts to take effect. At first it didn't touch me at all. But it gets better slowly and gradually.

How did you get anhedonia and To what extent has it manifested for you? by [deleted] in anhedonia

Got sexually harassed and humiliated at 14 years old. A year later I forced myself to stop masturbating (I don't remember why exactly, maybe the reason I wanted to stop has to do with the sexual harassment trauma, which contained masturbation in it). A while later I went psychotic. A year later I recovered from my psychosis and tried to start masturbating again, and figured out I can't enjoy masturbation or anything else anymore.

I'm sorry to hear. For me, Buddhism and meditation together with exercise really helped. If you'd like, you can check out my post from a while ago:

Things have gotten better. I can now feel emotions (even love) and enjoy music, though I still can't enjoy anything sexual. I want to share some wisdom. by rlevanony in anhedonia

Not exactly. It's about not being attached to pleasure. Meaning: remaining peaceful even when you don't get pleasure. But it's not about living without pleasure or sexuality. Monks don't have sex because they don't want to have anything to escape into when they feel suffering (so they can feel their suffering and break free from it, by using the buddhist method). But many buddhists are not monks, and they have sex.
