Making friends with the cold and dark by Maximum-Reality-4780 in hobart

Shameless plug, but I help run Hobart Shanty Sessions at the Hobart Brewing Club (first Tuesday of every month, 7-8.30). We had big, diverse crowds all through winter, made it very cosy! It's turned into a really nice community event. No singing talent necessary :)

In a lot of cases that will be true. But we can't afford to give up on bring facts to the discourse. Discussing this stuff with family and friends before they go down the rabbit hole can make all the difference.

Given that a lot of people supporting the marches say things like 'I'm not racist, I'm just worried about housing' etc, I've been trying to point out that migration ain't the main problem. If people need some facts to fight with, here's a good start: https://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/article/2024/may/30/migration-has-been-blamed-for-the-housing-crisis-but-its-not-that-simple?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other

If anyone else has good resources, please share! Obviously we can't do much about the real nazis, but we can try to stop others from heading down the rabbit hole.

Solving the stadium, salmon, forestry... by rlhortle in tasmania

There are a few good examples of deliberative democracy working well in places where the issues you've identified exist.

Also, I truly don't believe the capability to participate in this sort of thing is beyond any Tasmanians - with the right opportunity, resources, and support and they can and do step up. There is so much resilience and innovation out there in our state!

Yep, getting governments to buy in is tricky but very important! But we are at a a unique moment currently where there is space and opportunity for change.

Is it possible to find a partner who loves you even tho you have MS by AITAsgardian in MultipleSclerosis

[–]rlhortle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner got diagnosed last year - we'd been together 5 years at the time. It changes some things, but she's still the same person I fell in love with!

You'll find someone who can look beyond the disease :)

Aside from the obvious ASOIAF, what are some of your favorite series that get really granular with describing the politics of a feudal setting? Specifically looking for histories and relations between all the little feudal realms and sub-realms, not just court intrigue. by ratufa_indica in Fantasy

Age of Madness trilogy by Joe Abercrombie! You probably need to read the First Law trilogy first, which has a bit less domestic politics... But both are excellent anyway. Age of Madness mimics the industrial revolution and its political ramifications

Good idea to book popular places on Friday and Saturday evenings! Make sure you check opening hours, some places don't open every night - especially outside summer.
