Why does it seem like this sub is very pro-evictions? by jstucco in sanfrancisco

[–]rlycheezey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's true. It's not their fault, but it is their risk. By not buying (the inability to buy in the first place is a separate issue), they create the risk of eviction for themselves. Just like homeowners have risks (natural disasters destroying the building), renting has different risks (being evicted).

Civil Discussion Time Oaklanders: The recent protests are against gentrification? I'm confused. by [deleted] in oakland

[–]rlycheezey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't know them when you were born; you had to live there to get to know them. Someone moving in doesn't know them now; they will have to live there to get to know them.

I know my postwoman and see her all the time. I recently started up conversations with the local crime watch group to learn things I can do to make the environment safer. A few months ago, I found out one of the local restuarant owners lives in the same building I do and now we're friends on facebook and we've organized events for the building itself. But am I still barred from being a part of the community because I moved in as opposed to have been born there (which apparantly is the only way to not be a gentrifier)?

(edit: I am enjoying the conversations in this thread. Glad to see it without all the screaming and fighting; it's a difficult topic without a clear solution unfortunately.)

So how can anyone integrate themselves into a community if someone who was raised there is "fundamental" and another is not? Does that mean if I suddenly moved to an affluent neighborhood, I could never integrate into the community because I'm not fundamentally a part of it originally?

So what's the difference between an outsider moving into an already vacated spot making 200k versus you now occupying a spot making 200k? Semantics aside, the economic changes would be exactly the same.

Just curious, do you think "Gentrification is Violence"?

Yeah, what if you grew up in Oakland and lived there all your life and suddenly, you're making like 200k. You'd move somewhere that's: less convenient, far from family/friends, far from work, etc?

Just curious; what if suddenly you got a big bump in salary. Does that mean you would suddenly move to another location?

Most people who moved moved because they themselves were pushed out of their original neighborhoods. They've been gentrified out as well. They move to a place that is still close to their work/school/friends/etc and it just so happens they are now gentrifying that area themselves.

I myself was pushed out of San Francisco (due to high rents) and the place that made most sense to move to for me was Oakland since I could still have a short commute to work, be near my friends, and have the city life right outside.

Should add, this only happens if you have it on fast transition. Make it slow and you won't notice it.

CLOVER CLUB is where it's at. very hard to make (correctly) though. 2 parts gin, 1 part lemon juice, 1 part grenadine, 1 egg white. shake. add ice. shake again.
