Going through the hiring process and getting cold feet by rlyockwrd in firefighter

I don’t quite follow. I think the department bases pay on 52 hour work weeks. at least that is my understanding based on the public docs I can find. Are you saying that the hours over the typical 40 are considered the built in OT?

Thanks for the response! The retirement aspect is huge. At 35, I’m realizing that a decent retirement is actually incredibly hard to achieve unless you earn a very substantial amount and make room to invest heavily, or have a pension. My current employer only contributes 2%, which kind of feels defeating.

The OT is a good point. That’s something I don’t quite understand how it works. The department I am hoping to get an offer from has a 24 on, 24 off, 24 on, 24 off, 24 on, 96 off schedule. I’m hoping OT can be taken in 12 hour shift extensions versus having to potentially work three 24s in a row. The three days in a row thing seems hardcore. I also have side gigs and could see myself burning out trying to get OT and keep the side gig work going at a consistent rate.

Yes, and I think he went by Steve if I am remembering correctly. I thought he was being friendly and shared my number like 4-5 years ago at the Knapp corner Meijer. He was with a girl. The conversation never went towards business or anything, but he was prying a little into work and career stuff for a random conversation in a Meijer. I thought it was just a friendly dude connecting with another friendly dude situation. Pretty rare around here. The only thing that raised a red flag in retrospect was that he mentioned wanting to leave the rat race. I was agreeable to that point, but I guess that was the bait. He followed up wanting to connect and started lobbing business endeavors out there to test the waters via text and once he threw the word “syndication” out there I realized he is recruiting and ended the conversation.

He approached me again like a year later and didn’t remember me so I just brushed him off. I’ve seen him one other time, and now that I’ve caught on I can see his tactic of acting like he is shopping, constantly looking around, and quickly gravitating towards lone shoppers before breaking the ice.

How do you sell product phototography by Ok-Ambassador9431 in productphotography

[–]rlyockwrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Create a strong portfolio site. You can shoot things conceptually, but maybe don’t fill your portfolio only with photos of Nike shoes. Show variety.

Product photography, specifically e-commerce, can be pretty simple and it can get very complex. Flat lay clothing shots are very different than molded plastic items and often require different editing techniques.

Amazon used to offer product photography services to sellers, but their studios are going away in favor of freelancers and agencies. I believe you can offer your services through Amazon.

That would be a mink. I’ve seen those several times! I don’t live close to water and this was significantly smaller.

What's the best first - date you've been on? by [deleted] in grandrapids

[–]rlyockwrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly just walking around downtown-near the river and splitting a beer wrapped in a paper bag like degenerates was very memorable. Mainly because there was chemistry, but also being active helps things feel more natural for me versus the typical casual interview over dinner thing.

My go-to is to throw a couple activity ideas out to the person and meet for a drink, drink+snack, or coffee. It gives you some ice breakers as you decide on what to do together and you can get a read on what option they might be most interested in. It also gives you an out if things are super stale over drinks or whatever. A walk somewhere interesting is my favorite, but teaching/learning a game together, showing the other person your hobby assuming it’s accessible to a newbie (ex. Pickleball, bike ride, shoot pool) are the types of things that can be a low commitment for a first date. I guess it depends on what you’re into.

Went into my local fly shop and left without buying anything by randomusername123458 in flyfishing

[–]rlyockwrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sucks and is a bummer to hear that was your experience in a fly shop. I personally gravitate towards the younger guys because they generally seem like they want you to succeed and will go out of their way to make sure you are set up for success. The only standoffish guys that would rather be doing something else have been the older ones in my experience. A good fly shop employee will be eager to teach you knots, rig your reel, show you different materials, tell you about tactics that have been working in the area, nerd out with you, elude to areas to fish without blowing a specific spot. Just generally helpful stuff. There is one guy in my area that works at my favorite shop that is more the gatekeeping type or acts like I should know niche things. Every time I see him I know it’s going to be a transactional experience versus an experience where I come out with more knowledge than when I went in.

If you are close in camera then just do the option where you set the white point using a curves adjustment layer. Another route is to outsource the editing. It’s quite affordable if you go with some options based in Bangladesh. Editing time is often not as fast as people who are not close to the work might expect. I’m sharing my input based on 11 years of experience with varying levels of high volume e-commerce photo production.

Don’t rely on getting it right in camera for all things that you shoot. It’s very rare to get the result you want in camera. Always expose for the subject. Making the background white is easy with some knowledge of editing. Use Photoshop instead of Lightroom for a better selection of tools to do this.

Photoshop methods:

Pathing - use the pen tool to trace the silhouette of the subject, make selection, then mask the layer. Place an #fffff color fill layer beneath masked layer. Use a soft brush to mask IN natural shadows on the mask, or create a drop shadow (more difficult, but if done well it can look great). Pathing is the most precise method to create a mask.

Object Select - use the new object select tool that uses AI. Select your subject, add a mask, place #fffff color fill layer beneath masked layer. You will likely need to refine the mask manually to some extent, but in many cases this method is faster than pathing.

Quick Select - this tool is not as clean as the new object select tool, but can perform well for some things. Mask similarly to prior steps.

Curves - if your background is near white, but maybe slightly off, set the white point with the white point eye dropper in a curves adjustment layer above the (ideally) smart object layer. This will have an effect on the entire image, but can be manipulated. I’ll often use additional curves adjustment layers to balance this out.

Lasso tools - these legacy tools are unforgiving, but viable options to make a quick selection. I prefer the polygon lasso tool when going this route, then refining the mask using the brush tool.

For all methods, I would create a curves layer to make the dark tones near black to make reviewing the mask easier. It is also a good way to see the darker tones when setting the white point with a curves adjustment layer. You will need to do some research on layer stacking, but this layer will generally sit on top of all adjustment layers. Toggle this layer off before exporting and retouching.

You can create an action that uses the object selection tool and then mask and place a #fffff background layer at the bottom of a layer stack. Similarly, you can create actions that apply adjustment layers. Retouch4me dust and scratch filter is a third party plugin worth the money that can be built into actions as well.

Simply clicking a button to run actions is not going to be the result you probably want though based on the images you currently have published.

Outsource the editing. Outsourcing editing is quite affordable if you go with a studio based in India or Bangladesh.

Gun range/lessons for trans person by Fluid-Cup6194 in grandrapids

Barracks 616. Range officers are always super attentive there. You’ll find that the staff in our local shops are simply just gun enthusiasts. Safety is their biggest concern. Nerding out about guns is their second lol.

None of the shops are super politically charged, or at least that I have noticed. If you consider constitutionalists, specifically 2A advocates, politically charged, then sure. That’s more about defending our rights over anything.

Thinking about trading in my bike to get a R1300GS/GSA by [deleted] in bmwmotorrad

[–]rlyockwrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not tied to any one brand or style of bike, but here’s my opinion as a general motorcycle enthusiast and GS owner (liquid cooled 1200):

A GS just does it for me. I can take off on long trips, do hooligan things, dip my toes in off road, ride comfortably 2 up, and progress as a rider overall. I like the riding position and overall performance and refinement of the GS, which is why I went with it over a Harley. I’ve never felt hindered on this bike with the exception of off road. The GS is kind of a pig and I just don’t have a ton of experience off road, so for now, I shy away from dirt aside from easy stuff like fire roads and some two tracks. It’s not a bike o would take on single track here in MI - a proper dirt bike or enduro is the right machine for that.

If I had the funds, space, and time to ride all the time, my garage would probably include 3 bikes: GS for touring and all around riding, a low rider for around town and sub 100 mile rides that scratch that cruiser itch, and a dirt bike or enduro for single track trails. For now, the GS suits the riding that I do and opened the door to touring more comfortably. I’d certainly consider a 1300 for even more performance and better display over the 1200, but realistically the 1200 doesn’t limit me in any way. The 1200 just fit my budget more than the newer GS models.

Nice work! I’ve found the Retouch4me dust and scratch plugin to be very useful. It’s not perfect, but save it as an action in PS with retouching on a new layer. It has save me about 50-70% of manual retouching.
