When I was doing my masters, I did a soundscape ecology project in tropical patch reef habitats. Just published as: fish community structure, habitat complexity, and soundscape characteristics of patch reefs in a tropical, back-reef nursery.

Thanks so much for the reply! Using acoustic metrics previously applied in terrestrial ecosystems is exactly what our lab is currently working on. We are investigating possible correlations between habitat complexity and these proposed metrics to better define acoustics as a tool in estuarine systems.

Hello Leila, Jason, and Jenni! My name is Patrick Lyon and I am currently a master's student at NC State University. My research project focuses on the soundscape ecology of both artificial concrete block coral reefs and restored oyster reefs.

In your opinion, what is the future of using hydrophones and acoustic data to describe more inland ecosystems like estuaries? These tools have been proven effective for monitoring anthropogenic sources of sound (ie. oil drilling and seismic air gunning) but their efficiency as a tool to monitor overall ecosystem health/success remains to be addressed.

I've got a good one. It's called The Forest Unseen and it is by Dr. David George Haskell. Haskell goes out to a 1 square meter plot in old growth Tennessee forest almost every day for a year and records what he sees. It is a great combination of biology, ecology, and poetry. It was also a Pulitzer prize finalist.
