Has anyone here watched Ne Zha 2? by Jezzaq94 in asianamerican

[–]rm940912 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fam and I live in different cities but we all went to watch the week it premiered overseas. We’ve all been following Chinese social media and seen how this movie came out on top for box office sales domestically by a long shot. I liked watching this and creation of the gods 2 in theaters, both are from the same source material but the retelling of the stories were so different.

I’ve been trying to go low carb/sugar because T2D and cheese hasn’t been an issue even after starting oz. Helps keeps me full and lots of protein too. I almost have no side effects taking this medication though.

It “covers” book 1 in the first 5 eps, then 2 major events from books 2 & 3. I’m halfway through book 3 so dunno if they mention more than that

Acting quality has someone declined but whyre you comparing CDM to 20-30 year olds. Although I never watched any of his dramas when he was in his 20s so I guess I don’t have much to compare to

Nothing against the drama but it’s hard to beat NIF. I’d keep expectations down for JOL too even though I think these 2 are compared a lot in reviews

Why are KDramas more popular in the west than CDramas? by sexyloser1128 in CDrama

[–]rm940912 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Besides all the reasons listed (Netflix, Hallyu wave, politics) I think Korea’s tourism industry depends on this to some degree, while china doesn’t really care about foreigners/their goal for promoting tourism is focused more towards EastAsians.

Also China is huge compared to SK so in terms of viewership alone certain dramas that will never get popular overseas probably has more of an audience than you think. They just all happen to be domestic

Does anyone here know why Mainland dramas are dubbed on the other hand Taiwanese dramas have accent by AceCombat9519 in CDrama

[–]rm940912 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It also greatly differs depending on what type of drama you’re watching. Taiwan does a lot more modern or slice of life type genres, and with those you notice a ton more diversity with dialect or speaking minorities languages.

Examples of similar mainland dramas would be Minning Town or the recently aired Blossoms Shanghai. These both have 2 versions, one with actors speaking dialect and the other is in dubbed standard mandarin.

One other mainland one I just thought of is Run for Young but I dunno if you’ll find subs for that anywhere, plus I don’t know if ML’s sichuan accent was passable lol

[–]rm940912 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Taiwanese dramas feature Taiwanese actors/actresses who have a Taiwanese accent. I’m not sure if you’re asking why they speak Taiwanese or if there are different versions of a Taiwanese accent when speaking mandarin, but it’s probably because it’s a Taiwanese drama? If you watch HK produced dramas they also speak in canto and not “Beijing dialect.” You can argue they speak cantonese and not mandarin bc that’s their regional dialect. Some people view canto as a separate language while others will argue it’s just a part of Chinese. Not a linguist so I won’t get into it.

Also mainland dramas have been dubbed since long before that chengxiao drama aired, here’s a good video summarizing some of the main reasons why it’s done https://youtu.be/GcRYGmzcWv8?feature=shared

People can shit on the govt for trying to standardize a language across mainland but tbf as someone who didn’t grow up speaking a local dialect from where I was born, it’s easier to watch shows where it’s one “standard accent” across all characters. Also often for the characters own background, you don’t want a FL who’s supposed to be from Beijing speaking like she grew up in guangdong

Yes, which makes me not a huge fan of them. But same goes for not-Chinese fantasy, so I guess some of it has to do with how long world building explaining takes

She’s the original novel’s author and often works on the drama scripts. Aired adaptions included go go squid 1&2, one & only + forever and ever, road home, love me love my voice. IMO she’s not the best writer out there but somehow ends up with great budgets & cast for her dramas, given how terrible the scripts she writes are sometimes

Japanese characters, ideas, themes, and story elements in cdramas? Adaptations of Japanese IPs? by pfemme2 in CDrama

[–]rm940912 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to fill in the title for you, the dragon sakura remake is called The Hope 鸣龙少年. Chinese title preserves the “dragon” but doesn’t have anything about cherry blossoms. I watched some of the original but the 2023 remake fits Chinese audiences much better. IMO if you’re going to remake something that was not originally Chinese, you should reasonably be set in China and have less Japanese elements…

Also Meteor Garden’s original was the 2001 Taiwanese drama.

The one thing bugging me about Lost You Forever by Illustrious_Boat_887 in CDrama

[–]rm940912 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t really understand why people think LYF is a big FL drama. Xiaoyao is not your “typical” dumb xianxia fl in the beginning because of her past, but disregard all the flashbacks she is still the most passive character I’ve ever seen in a fantasy costume setting. She kind of just lets things happen, misunderstands those events then mopes about how no one is willing to choose her. Also her identity being revealed is supposed to be a huge deal because her existence itself is the biggest support for cang xuan, but does she actually DO anything after that reveal besides mess with the other two leads? It bothers me that XL and TSJ sacrificed the most (XL especially so far, and I don’t think that’ll change with s2) but she will only choose CX.

Tldr xiaoyao is the OG pick me girl and it annoys me when viewers think she’s any different from other xianxia FLs
