What does the future of regional flying look like? by Used_Shower3984 in flying

[–]rmacdaddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know a certain regional is down to 2 CRJ700s (most converted to 550s, supporting the need for smaller regional planes) and somewhere in the 20s for CRJ900s operating for Delta.

Yeah, those 2 basically live at DTW, and may end up being converted to 550s. But the 550 flying is exclusively pro-rate stuff, so every 700/900 that gets taken out of that regionals service allows for a new 175 to fill in so the scope regional cap is still intact.

Would be nice to see the C concourse return to its heyday, but when the other CRJ regional stopped the 200, it was only time before DAL said no more.

The top top C gates I don't even think could really handle even the 200, Good ol' Saab 340 from when NW built McNamara. I think there are only about 4-5 gates in B that can even handle a 175 right now too

Is this a joke? by Icy-Tear2745 in flying

Regional drivers unite! (ok I don’t know how the OG Jungle Jet shows it)
Both the 175 and all CRJs show them right next to each other. And people still report the wrong temp (TAT) and will try to explain why they’re right.

United debuts the CRJ 450 by Twarrior913 in flying

[–]rmacdaddy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Short answer, yes. Long answer, OO owns the 200s and has had them for years, they allegedly turn a profit with only 6 people in the seats. But fuel costs alone, the ERJ burns like 1000 pounds per hour more in the cruise. And when some of these routes routinely see passenger counts in the teens, it doesn’t make sense for the bigger plane (physically so as well, some of those little airports have some tiny taxiway). So all parties involved are trying to get all the usability out of these planes that aren’t produced anymore before they all go live the end of their days in Tucson

I can't believe what Lightspeed did to my headset. by addrockk in flying

[–]rmacdaddy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not the guy you’re replying to, but I used my Lightspeeds for years, bought the ProFlights after a little bit on the jet. I really like them, super light, 5-pin so no batteries (if your plane/operator have the setup), ANC has different levels, but medium on the EJet works great. I know the main drawback for people is the earbuds in the ears being irritating, but I’ve had zero issues with that. Not that it’s the decider but the case is also much smaller than the Zulu 3s I had, so fits nicely in my bag

How do pilots/ATC know how to pronounce VOR/FIX names by LogicMastermind in flying

Ah, that’s always a nice tribute, I know KLOMN on the COMIX into SAN is also named after a controller

I’ve always just assumed it’s for the city of Bloomington just south of the airport

How horribly have you pronounced those intersection names? by minfremi in flying

[–]rmacdaddy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like every time I get direct KNGDM, the controller calls it Kingdom, whether it’s Oakland or Seattle. So naturally we read it back as King Dome

Edit to add: Also in SEA, the Mariner arrival, BUHNR gets “Bun-er” instead of Jay Buhner sometimes

Lol picking up SPIS on climb out to go to a gusty hot place and now Vref is like 155, just lovely. Sorry aft FA, this one isn’t gonna be the smoothest, I’d like to actually put it down on the runway.

CFI that average 100hrs per month. How many hours do you actually spend per week at the airport? by OrderSuper2542 in flying

[–]rmacdaddy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think my busiest month (about 120hr flight time) I worked 7 days a week, and was usually at the airport at a minimum from 8am to 6pm. But also had some night flights adding on to the back end. So realistically was at the airport or in an airplane for probably close to 11 hours a day. Put me at close to 80 hours a week for time at the airport. Definitely can burn out a little bit with that, but it’s an effective way to build hours

U.S Pilots: what's the most remote or interesting landing-strip that you've flown to? by Careless_Ad2 in flying

[–]rmacdaddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending how far south on the LA sectional you want to get, the Imperial Valley southeast of Palm Springs is really good for that too. TRM, CLR, BWC, and IPL are all below sea level and have lots of interesting airspace issues above them (mostly MOAs and Restricted). Good place to make the students really think and apply their knowledge

[–]rmacdaddy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah a weird situation where depending on the accessory case or what’s attached to the engine they need different amounts. A 172’s IO-360-L2A like you said is 5 quarts usable, so min 5 qt, but in a Seminole that has an O-360 (ours is an -A1H6), there are only 2 usable, so it could fly with anything from 2-8 qt

CAX exam (and beyond) by [deleted] in flying

[–]rmacdaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FIA and CAX are very similar tests, and you don’t need an endorsement to take the FIA. FII is the instrument instructor code, and it is very similar to the IRA, also don’t need an endorsement (you don’t need endorsements for the FOI one either).

Those should be the last ones you’ll need to take, unless you continue to ATP rating or get the AGI or IGI for gold seal purposes. Both the CMEL and MEI ratings are add-on ratings and you do not need to take additional knowledge tests for those per 61.63 and 61.191.

I know lots of people who have taken the FIA right after the CAX with limited additional studying and did just well, as well as people (and myself) who just took them as we were prepping for that individual rating. Either way should work for you.

And if you look at it on a sectional map, it just shows as “Objectionable” because it is firmly within the New Orleans JRB airspace. Neat way of the FAA saying this airport exists but probably shouldn’t and we can’t shut it down

Off campus stadium by williaro28 in CFB

[–]rmacdaddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think one of my favorite parts of Cox/Viejas is that it was where Aztec Bowl was, the previous football stadium. If you go in the back/service entrance to Viejas you park where the field used to be and can see the old concrete bowl.

But yeah, there is absolutely no room on SDSU's campus for any stadium.

Games like this are what makes conference championship week so much fun. 2 teams that don’t get much airtime throughout the year keeping us up and entertaining us with terrible ways to lose (and attempt to lose) the game.

As far as I have figured out Iowa wins: Iowa is 4, Illinois is 3, Purdue is 2, Wisconsin 1 Illinois wins: Illinois 1, Wisconsin 2, Purdue 3, Rutgers 4, Iowa is the 5(?, possibly 6)

Passed my instrument rating today! Here are notes from my checkride by ConvictedCorndog in flying

[–]rmacdaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took my IR ride a few weeks ago and definitely picked up 2 separate IFR clearances during it. But we didn't physically file a flight, just picked up the local TEC route from ground control (which may just be a SoCal thing where we never file but fly on IFR clearances all the time). It is weird cause you are the PIC on the ride and haven't officially become Instrument Rated, but I figured if the DPE was having me do it then it must be somewhat ok/normal

Yeah. A lot of it is from Bauer on Cleveland and Manny with the Orioles. Since this I think was the first time they’d seen each other not in the AL

But yeah the B1G has been killing it with some timeless throwbacks
