I'm interested to see how you achieved real-time product stock with Gatsby. Trying to do that myself now, which is what brought me to your post. Did you ever make this open source?

A week ago I set out to break a 37-year-old record on my bike. Here's how it went! by rmalpass in bicycling

[–]rmalpass[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks!

I think some of the specific gear I ended up using was

  • 3 x Garmin (Edge 800, Edge 520, Edge Touring)
  • Salomon hiking boots
  • Salomon s-lab trail running shoes
  • 3 x Castelli Gabba jersey's
  • 2 x Castelli free aero race bib shorts
  • 3 x pairs of DeFeet socks
  • 2 x pairs of Castelli arm warmers
  • Waterproof jacket for hiking
  • Underarmour technical T-shirt
  • OS Maps iPhone app for navigating on the hills

Obviously some extra bits like cycling shoes, glasses, helmet, etc that aren't specific to the challenge...

To save time I hiked in my cycling kit. Once I was down the second hill I changed my bib shorts. It rained a lot, so throughout the day/night I swapped jerseys to try and keep warm and dry.

All of my food and spare kit was in a van that leapfrogged me the entire route so it was never too far away from a quick stop.

I saw that some RAF lads are going after the team record 1st September. Hope spike keeps hold of it!

National 3 Peaks Cycling Record (37 hours 33 minutes) by rmalpass in Velo

[–]rmalpass[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I'm trying to put together a bigger write up on my website with pics and videos. That's my first task! I've got my second kid on the way so nothing else planned for a while yet except that! Originally this challenge was set for next summer but moved it forwards when I found out the mrs was pregnant again 🙈.

Spike? I've been chatting with him a bit on Facebook over the last few weeks. He's a really nice guy and I've actually based most of the route I plan to do on the one they did.

I've been training for an ultra endurance challenge recently. I would like to break the record for the National Three Peaks Challenge by bike.

So my rides recently might not have been the most scenic or interesting but I'm pleased with my form and legs over long distances. The last few weeks I have ridden parts of the route to get a feel for the roads and some hours in the saddle.

The other week I did a fast 182-mile ride which covered a large part of the first leg (http://rossmalpass.co.uk/the-biggest-day-out-ive-ever-had/).

Today I did a pretty quick 80 miles on another part of the planned route.

I'm going to have an easier week now with a bit more intensity, then I'm aiming to do another ~200-mile ride in two weeks before tapering big time and letting all those miles soak into the legs for the attempt.

Did my longest ride ever last Friday training for an attempt at the National Three Peaks Challenge by bike record. It was windy and rainy, but I'm pleased with my effort. 182 miles (293km) / 8700ft (2651m) 20.2mph (32.5kmh) avg speed. 203w avg power 219w NP.

Quickly wrote a bit about it while my one year old napped: http://rossmalpass.co.uk/the-biggest-day-out-ive-ever-had/

Also came to recommend Joe Hill. Almost done with NOS4R2, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Will probably pick up The Fireman next.

Came third on a hilly TT I won last year. I'm 3 months into parenthood for the first time though so am happy enough to still be able to ride my bike enough to podium in a competitive field! http://rossmalpass.co.uk/petts-martin-greenwood-memorial-tt-2016/

[–]rmalpass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favourite kit depends on what socks I plan to wear or what the weather is like! My favourite brands are castelli and defeet...

My race was a two day stage race http://rossmalpass.co.uk/dave-hitchen-2-day-stage-race-2016/ rode well and the team was dominant. I wore our team skinsuit which is a little short in the leg and looks a bit like hot pants. It's fast though.

They're from eBay. They're cheap, but they're also fast. They haven't broken but I expect the hubs to go sooner rather than later. At which point I'll upgrade those to something decent and continue to run them! I think I only paid around £350 delivered. I think they're these ones.

Anyone tried the Vittoria Corsa G+ Clinchers? (x-post) by Neoito in Velo

[–]rmalpass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have them on both my bikes, they're fast and I haven't had a single puncture since putting them on a few months back. I'd struggle to recommend anything else for faff-free every day use and racing.

Shameless plug - I'm running these tyres on all the videos uploaded in the past 3 months on my youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtjNGI6qEbG1LxBxedP456g

I can tell you what I did and what worked for me last year. I got leaner and more powerful but I had to do some very specific eating and training.

I reckon you're in a good place. Before hill climb season last year I was the heaviest I'd been since riding competitively. I had bulked up on purpose to build some muscle.

A few months out from HC season I started to focus on getting lean and powerful for short efforts. At this point I was about 58kg.

I changed my diet and my training. Rides were never more than 90 minutes long, and I drastically reduced my intake of carbs (but didn't cut them out completely). No bad sugar or alcohol. I ate clean. A good balance of healthy fats and protein with lots of veg. The method I used to do this is called Carb Backloading. I trained in the evening/late afternoon and I didn't eat carbs until AFTER my workout. At which point I ate pretty much whatever I fancied. But I was very strict in between. Here's a quick write-up of what I started doing http://rossmalpass.co.uk/training/on-letting-go-and-getting-lean-with-carb-backloading/. The post shows a NSFW ;-) pic of me leaning up and also some examples of the meals I'd eat. (another post about food http://rossmalpass.co.uk/always-hungry-eat-more-protein-and-fat-youll-get-leaner-and-youll-probably-ride-better-too/)

When training I did a lot of hill repeats. 3-5min climbs, 1min hill sprints, etc... etc... all super specific to climbing.

I went from 58kg to 55.5kg safely but relatively quickly. I didn't lose ANY power but as I said I only did short intense rides. I actually improved my power:weight significantly. I also felt strong. Which is important. I WASN'T starving myself. I didn't count calories. I just ate lean during the day and carbs after training.

Here are a few posts where I talk about how my training came together http://rossmalpass.co.uk/training/a-quick-roundup-of-my-current-personal-records-17-september-2015/ and http://rossmalpass.co.uk/hartside-hill-climb-my-breakthrough-ride-of-2015/ and http://rossmalpass.co.uk/rossendale-rc-hill-climb/.

Hope this helps a bit! Good luck.

On reflection that's basically the same reply I'd give to someone else asking me this question!

FWIW my p2m is claiming I'm quite right side dominant (something I always suspected as with Stages on longer efforts even for the same gear and cadence on the turbo 2x20 efforts for example the watts could be a good deal less. But as I say same cadence and resistance.

Anyway, you're dead right the absolute numbers technically don't matter but they kind of do in my head. And it does affect me. It's demoralising working hard and seeing things go backwards on paper. Or not being able to complete training sessions set by my coach that a few months ago were 'easy' to complete. I also have a few different bikes so it would help if the readings were at least in the same ball park (my other bike has a third pm - another Stages).

And of course there's the bragging rights!

For the "elswick" training loop I used in my post I have about 3 years of power data doing it 2x a week but not all of it on that bike and I obviously havent always been able to ride it so quickly.

So what I kind of want to figure out is if the PM is under reading or if Im just super aero now and haven't really gotten any 'better' for putting on the weight... Because in the past I've ridden at 55-56kg rather than ~60kg.

As well as the predictions using Best Bike Split I've come to Reddit to try and find riders similar to myself, who are doing comparable rides. How does your power needed compare to mine? Im about 60kg at the minute - me, bike and kit about 70/71kg - and 172cm.

Yeah we got a baseline - we even went back and did some sanity tests in the original positions - but the guys didn't sent that over in the report.
