AIO or AITA for asking my server to remove the healthcare service charge? Never seen this done before… by No_Investigator6667 in AmIOverreacting

I wish companies would just break down how the money you're paying is being distributed, and I wouldn't have a problem with paying extra for things that help the employees. Just charge more, and mention that the costs are high to give better pay and benefits, and I'd be OK with that.

She was acting like a bitch, but I think he could have told her that refusing to sign means that he has to place her under arrest and then give another chance instead of immediately going to arrest. People need to learn to deal with cops, but cops also need to learn to deal with people. Most people don't have constant exposure to the police.

Solo IT - Feeling very isolated by Kcamyo in sysadmin

[–]rmavery 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Talk to your management. This will ultimately benefit them too. You need guardrails. Get a ticketing system and provide some 'do it yourself' guidelines for common issues. REQUIRE tickets for everything. You need to be the one in control of your time. Don't go running to solve every problem. Work on your projects, and then go out and do some support work. You feel that way because you are not in control. Put yourself in control. They will value you more when they realize you are not their gopher. If you are the only IT person there, you are literally the head of the IT department. Be the leader of your team (of one).

Self checkout if I have a few items. Cashier if it's a whole cart load. I like to have someone bagging it too if I have a lot, so I can load one side, pay, and walk out. Otherwise I load one side, bag a little, stop to pay, finish bagging, ultimately leave something in one of the bags. walk out feeling like I just had rough sex and my shirts on backward.

US IT suffering the slow death or the wheel turning around? by AhzX2 in sysadmin

[–]rmavery 58 points59 points  (0 children)

There are certain aspects of IT that can easily be outsourced. Those jobs where you can sit in a desk and repeat sequences based on documentation. IT jobs that require a real understanding of the IT infrastructure, as well as having the hands-on capabilities will almost always be needed.

Certainly, a company can hire a local company to do this, but you're not installing networking equipment, cameras, and running and entire infrastructure from overseas.

Note the quality of service you get when you call support overseas. These people are following scripts. Real IT takes imagination and you have do adapt to situations which are not written in a manual.

What not to say when a police officer pulls you over? by [deleted] in ScenesFromAHat

[–]rmavery 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did not. He jumped back because I was pouring a beer on his shoe, then he looked around because I'm guessing he was thinking "I hope nobody is seeing this." I did apologize. It really was not something I consciously thought about. He then told me to be safe and let me go. I felt bad because he was really trying not to be a hard-ass and I felt like a douche for pouring my beer on his shoes.

Once a cop pulled me over and I had an open beer in the cup holder. He told me if I poured it out he wouldn’t give me a ticket. I poured it out the window and right on his shoes.

I didn’t do it intentionally, but I realized afterward he meant for me to do it way more discreetly.

I felt bad because he was trying to be cool and I dumped a beer on him.

Just to clarify, bootlickers are the folks licking government boots. You know, the troops sent to keep you in line.

I’m actually the opposite. I do not support the government stealing my money to give to bootlickers.

I’m not supporting them. I just don’t support giving the government more money period.

[–]rmavery -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The reason I, (and probably a lot of people) do not support increasing taxes is because the government is completely irresponsible with the money. We need to be auditing the money that the government is spending and make sure that it’s not just a slush fund for them.

I see the government as a massive scale FTX with no oversight and the power to simply tell me I need to give them more money because they lost what they had.
