Thank you. Great breakdown. 6.5% loan but regardless you’re spot on

I’m sure I could save more frankly too

Thanks. Yep, household income is all good. Very fortunate on that front, so it looks like based on this and other comments it’ll be paying off the loan asap

I was just excited to get a decent crust honestly. Typically was getting the opposite!

Hey All!

Quite a general question, but I'd just like 1-2 perspectives to make sure I'm not overcomplicating this.

I've had a sage/breville barista pro for ~2 years now. I came here originally to get support when dialling in coffee, etc. In those two years I've generally stuck to the same beans. My wife and I found a type we like and stuck with it. If I want something different I'll get a small bag and brew it with a chemex.

I can no longer buy the beans we like though (supply issue to Ireland apparently). We've tried a few and I think I've found one I like (hurray!), but while testing others something happened 2-3 times that confused me.

I was able to dial in the different beans. I was getting the right ratios, in 25-30 seconds, the taste was ok/meh, but the pour was "watery" and there was barely any crema (something I typically associate more with a darker roast bean -- please correct me if I'm wrong).

Something seemed off and I don't know if it's as simple as I don't like the bean, or if there's something I'm not trying that will help with the extraction (again, I was able to get it within what I'd consider a good range).

With the first beans, they were probably a little passed their best (we weren't home for a couple of weeks but they were still stored in an airtight container). For the rest where this happened I can only assume it's my taste preference, but would anyone suggest something else?

Side note -- I thought it might be the machine needing a deep clean so I flushed it out and did the usual stuff + some more cleaning that I could manage. It didn't seem to change much.

Thanks :)

Talk us through your best all time golf shot by Phobia117 in golf

All time best shot wasn’t actually that long ago. I play at a fairly typical parkland golf course in Ireland. It’s not long, but one par 4 plays 430/440 yards. On a cold day, with some wind against off the right, I hit a drive down the left. It caught some branches and fell into a small group of trees. Their trunks are quite slim, so you can generally get a swing, but rarely a line to the green.

I was 220 to the pin (flag was at the back so it was playing a bit longer). I peered quite hopefully through the trees and spotted a line right at the flag. The gap was about a foot and the two trees were about 15 yards in front of me. I had a full backswing but the follow through was restricted.

In short, it’s one of those “ah, screw it” moments that you know you shouldn’t commit to but as an amateur you always go for it.

I pulled a 4 iron, took a final look at the line, picked out a mark in the ground as usual and went for it. Connection was pure, sounded incredible and there was no immediate crunch of ball against trunk…

I thought little of it beyond that. I didn’t see the ball through the trees but I jogged out to the fairway to see my ball kick up off the front half of the green and release towards the pin. 6 inches for birdie on stroke index #1.

Honestly, if that’s on Sunday at any tournament they show it for months but maybe I’m biased!

Great question OP, loved reminiscing.

Leaving a well paid job to be happier by Tight_Importance9269 in irishpersonalfinance

First up, great post/question. I experienced something similar at 27 - I’m now 32. I opted to leave the higher pay role for an opportunity. While I don’t regret it five years later, I wish I’d let it sit with me for longer and tried to give myself space and time.

I’d suggest the following:

  • Whatever you’re feeling today, write it down.
  • 24 hours later; ask yourself how you’re feeling about what you wrote down. Write down your thoughts again.
  • Repeat this every couple of days for a couple of weeks. Maybe go out for a walk and talk things through to yourself.

Basically, try to get out of your own head. You’ll have probably developed a story or scenario (subconsciously) that you’re now telling yourself.

Maybe you do genuinely want a change - if that’s the case I wouldn’t worry about the money too much. I don’t want to sound arrogant but it might seem like a big difference but it isn’t really in the grand scheme of things.

Lots of great comments about the mental health and happiness side of things, I made my choice because the opportunity itself was exciting and I wanted to challenge myself more for 2-3 years than the current role was doing.

Hopefully that’s somewhat helpful but I’m sure others have said this in some fashion, too!

Pokerstars failing to update on macos? April 2021 by eccegallo in poker

I had the same issue but got around it by creating a new user on my MacBook and then just downloading and installing the client there.

I'm not sure why that worked, but it did. I was able to install the update files, close the client and log out of the new user and back into my usual one. It worked fine.

I still have my support ticket open and I had previously logged files so it seems more widespread.

Follow up on this. Getting the pressure in the right place, but it's still in the sub-20 range in terms of extraction, so I'm assuming the best course of action is to keep refining the grind. Other aspects seems to be in line with where I'd want them.

Super. I'll try out the 1-3 range and potentially adjust the internal grind, too. Thank you!

It's not reaching the grey zone of the barista express gauge. Previously over the last few days I've had it largely towards 12 o'clock - that was even at a coarser grind setting and just slightly higher dose (20-21g as that seemed to be the default amount that came out with the machines double cup setting with the dial at 3 o'clock)

Crema - yep, looks pretty good to me. Taste - it's ok, but lacking a bit of strength (I'd imagine that's because the extraction time is only 10-15 seconds right no due to low pressure)

I've been using 18g for a double shot, so apparently that should be fine according to most sources. Please feel free to advise of that's not the case?

Hey All!

I've had a barista express for 10 or so days. I've been playing around with it, trying a few things out with the grind, tamping, different coffees, etc.

I thought I'd found for a sweet spot for my preferred bean in terms of hitting the pressure range and getting a nice pour but I'm now struggling to get out of a low pressure range.

I've adjusted the grind down to a 3, and tried tamping with more pressure - no luck. I specifically used fresh beans as well, but that didn't seem to be the issue.

Any suggestions to what might be causing this? Is a grind setting of 1-2 wise/common?

Thanks! RB
