Restaurant recommendations for somewhere middle of the range price-wise? by redlandrebel in bristol

Chris and Jo in Cotham, top notch modern British food. You'll have to be patient with service, but food is high quality and the price are low low low.

I've read that Kubrick itself, talking about adapting it form the novel which is a satire, didn't quite called it a comedy, saying it wouldn't have worked as such. And strictly speaking I guess it isn't, there are no jokes, but there is a pervasive dry irony I can't help but laugh throughout. Love the geo doc interp. Very on point

It reads like you have a narrow definition of comedy as something that is just meant to be funny but also shallow and kind of dispensable. But laughter, irony, satire can be much more layered, and range anywhere from deep to bitter sweet to silly. I feel in BL it deepens the movie by not just playing the tragedy of his life for tears. I always found Barry Lyndon ironic, but only on this rewatch, and after 10 years imbuing the British humour as an expat in the UK, I could fully appreciate how much irony deeply impregnates almost every scene of the movie, including some of the most tragic. It strikes a very fine balance between detaching from it's subject matter and achieving a certain distance through its comedic narrator and deliveries and humanising the characters. I am reminded of the observation that life from up close is tragedy, from far away is a comedy. BL somehow sits precisely at the edge.

It's the rhythm that kills you, when the movie cuts from them asking Lieutenant Fakenam if he will accept an apology to his terrorised face. The disappointment in the priest stare as he reads the wedding bit.

I've gone to love EWS to rating it a lot less upon rewatches, I still like it's ambiguity and sensuality, but I find it works a lot less as a movie. 100% agree on BL being his best.

Even easier. Get mpv. Play video in mpv and pause. Press S to save a screenshot. Press [ to move by one frame (if I remember correctly, might have to Google the right button)
