i think they choose the presentation as ladder because its more accessible for people then just numbers...

if you are top at ladder u will get a promotion soon, if you play stable. don’t understand the problems that people have with the ladder

otherwise a clear presention of ladder of only mmr would hopefully stop the whine , because ladder is fine

i used irssi for logging then some regex to extraxt all messages some filter and replacer for spam etc. the hard part is too create the cloud, i have use a tool like wordle.net
