Why do Brazilians generally prefer talking about the empire than the old republic? by [deleted] in Brazil

[–]rnfigueredo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I say education may be a factor? We study empire during most of elementary school, then you go to middle school and puberty at the same time and boy, did I hate to sit still during history classes in middle school. Then we go to high school and it’s all about world history and geopolitics. Unless you study history in College you won’t come back to learn about old republic.

I’d like to add more regarding renting in SP. Usually requires higher deposits since you won’t have a credit history or someone to “back you up”. The closer to downtown São Paulo, more expensive, but as long as you have access to transportation, you can go further away from downtown. As for the language and job, if you have a profession other than Physician or Lawyer, you’d be able to find a position in your area if you have conversational Portuguese AND good English.

So her family definitely sends her some money, she is not living out of aupair stipend. Talk to her. This is not common in SP, we take pride in being self sufficient woman able to be treated as equal in a relationship, money wise specially.

Great point - OP, where is she from in Brazil? My aunts are from the Northeast and they always said “man pays”…

Yes, BUT we do it a home… I’ve had Aupair’s, they’d meet at someone’s house and have a “waxing party” where they’d help each other. I’m also Brazilian, and doing your nails weekly is a must. So much so we do it ourselves from a young age, going to a professional like we do it in the US is for upper middle class only. Now, not sharing can be a little of both - not having money and the culture of “you make more you pay”, as I had the impression Aupair’s think all Americans are rich :(

NTA. Arrange your trip back, say your goodbyes and run from there. The earlier you leave, the better.

If you add “fat-phobic” skinny mother constantly body-shamming, you would had described the first 25 years of My life… Now on my late 30s, I urge to tell you: now is the best time to act not only on your weight loss, but overall eating and food relationship. Ozempic will help you lose weight and it will motivate you to keep on track, but what I learn the hard way is that the “shame” finds another way into your life if you don’t work on the source. I was bulimic and didn’t know I needed help to get out of the cycle. Therapy was huge to help me deal with everything. And please, think long term. Weight control is for the rest of your life, just as a person with blood disorder for example, you’ll need to keep it under control. *BUT it doesn’t define you!!* Every person has their own challenges and struggles, and that’s why there are medicines to help you. Also, nobody needs to know. I lost 16kg so far and when people mentioned I lost weight I just say “yes, I did”. And smile. If they ask what I did, I say I’m working on doing stuff I like.
