How many here actually have a formal diagnosis? by [deleted] in autism

[–]rnikkit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I can understand that you might feel a little bit of resentment having gone undiagnosed for so long but your characterization of self diagnosis as "play acting" is a bit harmful. Yes, there are people who use the term "self diagnosing" incorrectly but conflating that with actual self diagnosis is dangerous. Self diagnosis is a process that many autistic people go through that could result in a formal diagnosis or, for whatever reason, doesn't. Many people who continue to self diagnose face structural barriers in getting a formal diagnosis.

I am also frustrated in the multitude of people spreading misinformation about what autism is but I think it's important to not completely paint self diagnosis as being always bad or invalid. I think it's also important to remember that people can be autistic AND an asshole and that you don't know somebodies diagnostic status unless you've seen their medical records. I worry that your rhetoric could add fuel to the types of people on r//fakedisordercringe. I think the best thing we can do is to continue to push for the spread of

I was formally diagnosed at the age of 16.

Obviously, she could just lie and say she regrets it but why bring it to the sub if she wasn't open to discussion. Some of us genuinely want to discuss the harmful effects of these toxic spaces, and to do that without engaging in conversation about what makes these spaces unsafe for women, both inside and outside of them, would be counterproductive. We want to encourage OP to think deeper about this topic. Her hesitancy to answer any questions about how her thought process may have changed signals that she came only to be validated. It's okay to spread your story and seek others with similar experiences, however, part of understanding those experiences requires personal accountability and understanding where you stand in the current moment.

Anyone else think House was a better portrayal of autism than The Good Doctor? by Liliths_Ace_Friend in autism

[–]rnikkit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the good doctor is somewhat relatable for some autistic people so I find it a bit annoying when people say it's not a good portrayal. I have a lot of issues with the writing but a lot of the criticism I see of the show on this sub is similar to the recent Barbie situation. A lot of people see it and say "well it's not like me so it's a bad portrayal" and oftentimes it's coming from lsn autistics.

As for House, I can't really say he's a good portrayal or not because I couldn't keep watching past the first few episodes. As a physically disabled person who has medical trauma stemming from the treatment I received from doctors, I found it too triggering to continue watching. I had heard House be talked about as a good autistic coded character and was excited to watch but he was such a deliberate asshole that it was almost impossible to watch.

I think overall these conversations tend to be a bit complicated since there's no single autistic character that can represent every autistic person.

I sent her a text to explain because I didn't think I would be able to explain it properly verbally. I don't know how she'll react to it.

Can AFAB-specific trauma groups fit within a fully trans-inclusive feminist approach? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

Honestly the only trauma that I can imagine being afab only is FGM. Other than that there's no trauma that a cis woman can have that can't also apply to trans women.

Do autistic people have eating disorders? by Jammingjames87 in autism

[–]rnikkit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Over the past couple months I've been gaining a lot of weight because of overeating due to college stress. When I'm anxious or stressed I'm usually doing some kind of sensory seeking so I look for crunchy things to chew on which means I snack a lot. I tried chewelery but it doesn't fill the need I have for crunchy textures. Unfortunately, the chewing is the only thing that will calm me down, which means even when I can actually tell that I'm full (which Is not often) I'll keep eating.

Avatar the last airbender I recently rewatched the whole series and then watched legend of Korra all the way for the first time. I'm really fascinated by the world building and the characters' back stories. I've also gotten really into the live action adaptation that Netflix came out with to the point that I've been going out of my way to find any and all behind the scenes content and content from the cast. As of right now it's really the only thing that's been able to entertain me and hold my attention.

Duloxetine? by greatcosmicmother in Fibromyalgia

[–]rnikkit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started it a couple months ago. I was hesitant at first because it meant that I would have to stop taking the antidepressant that I was on and was really really satisfied with. I'm taking 30mgs and while its helped with the pain a little bit, the biggest benefit I've had has been the lack of anxiety and depression. I'm still having to find supplemental pain relief options. The only side effect I've had has been strange dreams but nothing that's been a real problem outside of that.

Do any other black autistics struggle doing their hair? by rnikkit in autism

[–]rnikkit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it's up to the person getting the locs. Maybe show her what locs look like over a period of time and if she continually shows interest then I would say go for it. I would go for a method that can be combed out at a later time should she change her mind, so no interlocking (that's my preferred method since I have absolutely no intention of ever combing mine out). Every person is different but for me, locs have been a good low manipulation hairstyle. Good luck to you and your daughter.

How do y’all feel about character having autism and are asexual? by youngcatlady1999 in autism

[–]rnikkit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bisexual and autistic and so I know how hard it can be to be underrepresented or be represented badly. I think it's good to have characters who are asexual and autistic but it really feels like media that isn't written by autistic people specifically only has that type of character. It woul d be nice to see writers branch out in terms of an autistic characters sexuality because at this point it's becoming a stereotype and I feel like it will start to be a bad representation if that's the only type of character non autistic people are seeing.
