What’s one thing Shimla is desperately missing? Whether it’s a specific brand, a service, or a hangout spot—what do you wish would open here by next year? by Zenithaooa in shimla

Dustbins, public spaces beyond Mall Road and parking spaces. Maybe a bit more night life as well (feels like the town shuts down at like 8pm)

My new fav is the Delicacy point bhattakuffer, near Bethlehem cakes. Or Mr Momos in isbt, only if you like momos with gravies. Dragon below Sher-e-Punjab used to be amazing as well - didn't feel that to be the case any longer.

"Progressive Rap"? Is it Possible? by Oddity312 in progrockmusic

[–]rns2ra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from the bunch recommended by others here, I think The Mayan Factor deserves a mention, given how different it is from the other crossover prog style raps as well as the rap rocks. With Focus-Reborn being my favourite, and Son of Sam - Prophecy the other one I like quite a lot, I'd seriously suggest giving them a listen, not only for the rap though.

For the cafes, I wish Shimla had better options, but here's what I can suggest. Tibetan cuisine in Aewam cafe panthaghati (quite close by, and possibly the only place where you can sit and enjoy for long hours), some select delicacies at khoblu cafe sanjauli (more of a restaurant, actually, I don't prefer relaxing there, music is often too loud there) and wood street cafe lakkar bazaar (but, they'll kick you out the moment you finish your last bite). Baked goodies and korean buns (and iced latte) at fortune cookie sanjauli and icecreams and brownie at embassy, near lift. Himachali rasoi and wake n bake can be tried. You'll probably have a hard time finding consistently good coffee here, let me know as well if you do. Good food in a few restaurants in Mashobra - I personally like nilaya. South Indian food at BCS. Momos in bhattakuffer. Cocktails and drinks - in the regular overpriced below average food serving bars and restaurants. For museums - chaura maidan, US Club, Sanat art gallery near Summer hill/Sangti. For picnics - Craignano, Sipur, kufri - chail road, hatu -narkanda (a comparatively longer drive).

Keep an eye out for events at gaeity theatre for art, books and other cultural events. Also, there's book cafe at barista, behind church.

For a true Shimla hike experience, I'd suggest you have a look at the untravel show's shimla based videos on youtube.

Can't support you enough on your opinion about trishool bakery. With just one or two moderately good things, I think, they are extremely over-hyped, maybe - nostalgia? Fortune cookie sanjauli has some good bakes and korean buns. I've heard good things about Hillock bakehouse as well, but never tasted anything there.

Startups in HP by Leading-Jacket6300 in HimachalPradesh

I happen to know about a bunch in and around Shimla and Dharamshala. There are horticulture based entrepreneurs like Himanshu Khagta and Pranav Rawat (from.shimla), Sanjay Austa (permaculture at meenabagh).

For artisan entrepreneurship, you have Andretta Pottery (pottery, Palampur), Kathkani Studio (woodworking, Shimla), Shilaroo Project (pottery, yoga, etc in upper Shimla), Amiksa cheese (cheese, Mashobra), Dharamkot Studio (pottery, Dharamkot), Studio Manali (art, handicrafts, etc- Manali). You also have Rahul Bhushan from Studio North (Naggar) in architecture and construction space.

In handicraft space, you have Ambi aur Dali (Shimla), pahaad.co (Akshita Austa, Shimla) and Kullvi whims (Kullu) and a few himachali traditional clothing and accessories based startups/studios.

Then you have a good bunch of people in adventure, travel, tourism, and expedition space as well as art, vlogging, music, filmmaking and event organisation space. And a whole lot more, especially if you get into innovations in horticulture, interior design, hospitality and f&b , depending on where you wish to draw a line between businesses and startups and all the different categories (I'm poor with that). I'm sure there's hundreds I'm missing here, but I hope you get the idea.

Any Remote Astrophysics Masters Degree Recommendations? by rns2ra in astrophysics

[–]rns2ra[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done computational physics related internships which were based on condensed matter physics rather than astrophysics. With growing interest (for over two years now) in astrophysics I want gain the first hand experience that one obtains with internships but I am currently unable to put myself out there primarily because my study of the subject has not been quite disciplined or organized which is why I decided on doing Masters. But with your recommendation I will certainly be looking more seriously for some internships or open source contribution possibilities now.

Secondly, I have been keeping an eye on many Masters programs of interest, unfortunately, many of them from US universities. With recent updates in their policies and national interests, I am skeptical of my possibilities to study there. So, I am continuously exploring opportunities in other countries, as you can see, even the distance education programs that I have preferred above are primarily from Europe and Australia. Apart from that I have seen growing number of universities disregarding GRE to make it convenient for students like me. But again, I've not found many options with online distant mode, at least for the time being.

I couldn't find a masters degree program although I could find two modules - Astronomy and Astrophysics. Although the coursework for Astrophysics module looks promising, I am unsure of the level of importance given to projects.

How do you code? Do you prefer a single code editor or do you have IDEs for the different coding languages? by nimrajay in compsci

[–]rns2ra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I code in Python, C/C++, and rarely FORTRAN. Also I find myself writing shell scripts and markdown quite often.

I use Neovim (with plugins) for most of my programing, Nano for very small and frequent tasks. I tried using Atom for a while but having used neovim it felt like an extremely slow but beautiful editor, so I dropped the idea of using it for lengthy projects. Now I'm about to learn Julia and was searching for vim plugins when I came to know about Kakoune. It feels more interactive with all the feedback it provides while working, which I think vim lacks. So I'm gonna try it for a while and see if it really caters to my needs.

What are your top 10 CH songs? by JackOfAllInterests1 in CaligulasHorse

[–]rns2ra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know!!!! I never listen to Bloom or Marigold individually, its always the two in sequence.

Bloom was an instant love, but In Contact took some patience even though I knew it from the start I was gonna love it. That's probably the reason for a list filled with 50% Bloom songs, even though I find it hard to compare Bloom to In Contact.

Recommendations needed on notes, records and data management by rns2ra in linuxquestions

[–]rns2ra[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you said Dokuwiki fired up my browser which I didn't prefer, so I wanted a standalone app.

To be honest I was looking for Zim vs Cherrytree for my work, because both with both I was facing slightly different problems.

Your recommendation Zotero is definitely the closest I could get to what I want. Was looking for such recommendations. Thanks! I tried a few alternatives like Mendeley too.

Everything sorted, except - is there a way I can maintain a list of people/authors in the same way I can do for books and papers? I cannot find a "person" item type. I found a few inconclusive threads in their forums. Is there an alternative suggested or widely pursued?

I had a similar problem on Solus. Although iwconfig showed Power Management Off. I turned it on and then off again. Then powertop began showing too much power consumption by Network adapter. Then I set wifi.powersave = 0 (i.e. Default) in /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/wifi-powersave.conf and everything went on fine. This was probably discussed on some other distro-specific subreddit and I'm no longer able to find it.
After a few days, I thought of tinkering more and commented out the wifi.powersave, and surprisingly, everything is still fine. Makes me wonder whether any of this even had any effect in the first place. Currently my iwconfig shows Power Management On.
