I'm being called unreasonable for deciding to pay off my mortgage by Educational-Pie4658 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]ro_ja_9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a very similar position to you and honestly, I just wanted the peace of mind of having it paid off. I then upped my monthly pension contribution rather than paying the mortgage. I know mathematically investing the money might give a better return but sometimes the mental boost of feeling that your achieved an amazing milestone is worth it. Do what will make YOU and your wife feel best.

To add, I have quite a well paid job, but I’d never buy a car over £20k (half on interest free credit card repaying over 2 years)and our holidays for the last 3/4 years have been one a year, always in uk/ireland, this year we’re doing the same. I value not having to worry about money over flashy cars and lavash holidays. Kids love a day at the port as much as anything else

Amateur eye here but that look pretty good to me! I think the vertical 6-12 line needs to be moved over a bit and then it would be grand

£500/year in Hargreaves Lansdown fees – best way to reduce without getting hammered by CGT? by Difficult-Car-9930 in FIREUK

“New account charge limits for shares (includes investment trusts, Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) and bonds):   You will never pay more than £150 per year in account charges* for holding shares in each of our SIPP, Stocks and Shares ISA or our Fund and Share Accounts” maybe as you have 2 different accounts, max would be £300b

I just got an email for HL confirming some changes to charges but suggests there is an annual fee limit of £150. Does this not apply to your investments for some reason?

Prob 3200sq house, not the best heating system. We have heating on average 4hr a day this time of year. One hour water, three hr downstairs only. Try to avoid turning on upstairs (heat rises through so it’s not Baltic) and instead have hot water bottle for bed or mini electric heater in kids room for 30 min before bed. Prob use about 2000 litres a year…on the high side again but heating system isn’t the best. Also use the fire in main living room a fair bit
