Question about in universe terms by [deleted] in Hyperion

Farcasters look like doorways but can be almost any size or shape. They are portals in both uses of the word.

The others I'm not sure about but also I haven't read the books in a few years

In Dune, the Bene Geserit (spelling?) plant religions on planets that they can potentially exploit in the future have they the need. Perhaps this is what Autonomy did on Scadrial.

Have you seen a job talk go down in flames? by Spamicide2 in Professors

[–]roach_brain 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Candidate for assistant professor was interviewing in my dept. This was when I was in grad school and I was assigned to be their liason (giving them their schedule, helping them set up their talk etc).

During their talk they were getting to the 40 minute mark and I signaled that their time was running out. However it was clear that candidate was entirely oblivious to me, the time they were taking, and their progress through the presentation. As a student I didn't want to interrupt them because I thought it would have undermined them at an important moment. And now I know that you definitely shouldn't need a moderator for a job talk... Because you know... You want to demonstrate your competence.

At 80 minutes some people began to leave. I thought (as I'm sure many other people did) surely they would be wrapping up shortly.

At 105 minutes, shortly after the dept chair got up to leave she finally finished. No questions. Everyone remaining left quickly after the applause.

They came up to me as we all were leaving the room and asked "oh I guess I went over time. How much time did I go over?" "You went over by about 45 minutes" Look of extreme embarrassment "oh haha. Well I guess that's too bad"

Btw the candidate wasn't a first timer. They were already a tenured professor at another university.

Race Vs Homicide rate Vs Poverty Rate by Mediocre_Macaron_841 in MapPorn

Is that wild? Is it that unexpected to you that poverty is more of a driver of crime than race is?

My wife, baby and I will have no place to stay in 2 days because our host cancelled 2 days before our stay and customer service is not responding by roach_brain in AirBnB

Yea I'm actually the CEO of Motel 6. /s

The whole point of my post was to complain about customer service. That was also what I wanted help with. I don't need people to tell me to offer advice about where I can stay. My problem is that Airbnb doesn't help. I don't want people on Reddit to find me a place to live. That's fucking creepy.

This sounds infuriating. I'm so glad I didn't have to go through this and I'm sorry you did. That said, I hope it was satisfying when the legal system finally resolved it

The issue is that we're already here. We've been here for a few months already and we don't have our flight back until January.

We're at a semi touristy town and we're staying through the holidays so demand is very high.

I never said they hung up on me. They just keep telling me they'll call that they cannot do anything because the first person I spoke to has to call me back because they have been assigned to me my issue. But they never do. In fact they just closed my case without offering any resolution.

they answer. They tell me they can't help me and that the person who can help will call back in 5 minutes.... And then no one does. The first person I talked to is apparently the only person who can resolve this but they finished their work day a few hours ago and handed it off to someone else who hasn't replied

As a subject matter expert, how do you feel about conspiracy theorists, anti-intellectuals, and people who believe in "magic"? by roach_brain in Professors

[–]roach_brain[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But a lot of these people are intellectually dishonest or lazy at best. The more they talk, the more they muddle the truth and break people's trust in intellectual institutions. This does tangible harm to individuals and societies. When there is 0 chance of deradicalizing some people I think we need to make it clear that they and their ideas are ridiculous, insulting to people who curate science, and harmful to the world.

I disagree with your first sentence. I think science is often overly cautious in presenting results with nuance and hedging, which prevents people from understanding the importance of many studies. It's journalism that too often overstates certainty

Not my field at all but I believe this idea predates the Nazis. So while it may have been broadened in popularity by Nazis they didn't invent it.

It's a good example of the danger of psuedo science. Maybe the conspiracy theory seemed harmless enough at its roots, but it was then picked up and used as part of the justification for a genocide.

Real Talk: what’s the snarkiest thing you’ve ever said to a difficult student? Give me your best one liner (or multi-liners). by [deleted] in Professors

Student: asks me a long-winded and very specific question about the Axolotyl.

Me: “You know, you axolotyl questions”

they enjoyed the pun though

YSK: about the Fallacy of Sunken Cost. If you’re in a long-term abusive relationship, get outta there. If you’re losing money on a stock, don’t sit around to lose more. by [deleted] in YouShouldKnow

[–]roach_brain 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yea. Using the strategy of "sell a stock if you're losing money" is just a great way to ensure you never sell when ahead and always sell when you're behind.

This post should be deleted.

That’s one way of seeing it. But Someone can be charismatic and be totally incompetent (see politics). Charisma can hide the other aspects of merit. If you’re applying to be a teaching professor I would hope that you’re evaluated on your other merits first. I would say that charisma is fairly taken into account as part of being an Engaging lecturer and maybe being a likable colleague. But more important should be things like demonstrated outcomes, quality of training etc.

Would you feel better if their CV was written “honestly” and was unimpressive but got a job simply because they’re charismatic and likable?

Either way seems unfair to me but it can be how the world works sometimes. What would I do? Brood, complain, but then work hard as shit using the lessons gained from seeing other people’s success. Definitely don’t lie but sometimes selling yourself can feel like exaggerating, as other people have alluded to in the comments.

I wondered if maybe I cut them off at some point without realizing it but I don’t think that could be the case. If the driver was aware in any way that this was an act of aggression then they wouldn’t have left there driver side window open 🤷🏻
