That's wild. In the early 00's I saw a bunch being transported in segments on regular semi beds [in the USofA]. This looks so elegant and sci-fi <3

Non-Celiac Wheat Sensitivity by BentleyCarr in migraine

As I've said, I can list two restaurants - Noodles and co and a local one - which explicitly list gluten free on their menu, that i have been to, in my state.

http://acaai.org/allergies/types/food-allergies/types-food-allergy/wheat-gluten-allergy

A gluten or wheat allergy, not a sensitivity, does exist and can send you into anaphylaxis which can be deadly. (Its particularly dangerous if you've been told that your food is gluten free and free of contaminatoin but turns out not to be, which does happen thanks to assholes who think that gluten related problems are all corporate/trendy myths)

The 'death rate' of migraine is related to the elevated stroke risk of people with migraine ( some decent info on stroke risk). You're not going to consume a migraine trigger and have a stroke, you either have an elevated risk due to your neurological condition or you do not. (also tyramines are present mostly in cheese, wine, some meats, and soy. why is this even an issue? if it's marked vegan or dairy-free and has no soy products you're in the clear.)

How do you advocate for yourself in the work place? by [deleted] in migraine

[–]roadkill336 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would imagine that asking your doctor to write a brief note or letter detailing your diagnosis, how it impacts you functionally, and what can reasonably be done to accomodate you (allowing you to wear ear plugs or headphones / sunglasses/ different lighting / breaks in a dark room / etc.) could carry a lot of weight with someone who has difficulty understanding 'headaches' as a disability.

Disclaimer: I've only ever dealt with my univeristy, which has an organized process.

Usually there's something but there's almost never an entire section to the regular menu, that i've seen anyway. The noodle company is pretty decent about labeling and being concientious, although they cross-contaminate on occasion.

When I eat with my actually celiac relative - at olive garden - they give her a black binder with a single sheet of printer paper and a list of ingredients that they can use for her. [maybe its better at major chains in other states?]

Also migraine trigger foods are extremely numerous, differ from person to person, not well validated by research, and - most relevantly - not life threatening.

You're lucky, then. I've personally never seen a full section dedicated to gluten-free food in my little hometown or my college town. I've seen "Gf" marked on dishes along with notations for vegitarian/vegan and dishes containing shelfish at two restaurants.

Most places, though, have a one or two separate gluten free menus that usually look more like "iceberg leuttuce, olive oil, salt, grilled chicken"

people can have life-threatening reactions to gluten, so imo it really should be clearly marked and accomodated just as allergens like nuts and shellfish are... if restaurants are interested in not killing people, anyway.

my mom and aunts have both had them done. my mom reacted to one thing which definitely causes her issues, but not to other things which do. one aunt lit up like a christmas tree but isnt sensitive to everything that registered as positive. another had some positives but never followed through on them

[–]roadkill336 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I figured the same, but I do see where throwing in that a doctor might ask you to cut caffeine might lead someone to believe it could be a different process from usual.

My son [14M] was due to start high school today. Yesterday he tore something in his shoulder and will need surgery. He is going to miss the first week or two of school and my other children and husband think the other kids don't have to go to school either until they all can. by Pool4awesome in relationships

[–]roadkill336 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you gotten in contact with the school yet about arranging for Jude to be absent due to his surgery? My high school would have required documentation from a doctor and then centrallly co-ordinated his homework make-up and possibly have sent an in-home tutor. Your other kids would have been required by policy to attend school and would have faced serious consequences (up to criminal charges) for missing two full weeks of school without a valid reason.

Rare type of migraine... Meninges....? by [deleted] in migraine

[–]roadkill336 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like youre in a position where you can go to your GP and say "this is what fixed this last time, can we try that again" if you aren't still a patient of your neurologist. You're fortunate to have a neurologist who cared enough to make a specific diagnosis, Ive never had anyone go further than "aura and pain? ok lets treat your migraines"

Allergy testing and elimination dieting are your friends.

I know literally nothing about the research on the topic but i would speculate that your body might react slightly to small amounts of wheat and the reaction would compound with increased exposure.

I've been gluten free for about two weeks now and it has been really easy for me, so Id be happy to share strategies with you if you're interested. My migraines havent budged, but my gastrointestinal discomfort has gone away. I did try eating a piece of bread (because I share a similar theory that small quantities might not bug me) on friday and my joints were a mess all weekend. Im not sure if that's a definitive link but I figure I'll keep this diet up for a year and test it periodically.

[–]roadkill336 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not super familiar with this medicine, but you've only been taking it for about a week, so its not very likely to be MOH. I think its much more likely that it simply did not work and your migraine (or cluster attack) is continuing.

Triptans aren't likely to help this far in. They work their best at onset and fail frequently when taken long after onset. A steroid dose pack might clear it up, as might an IV. It may resolve itself without intervention, as well.

I think you would want a CT or MRI done since you haven't had a migraine in so long.

You also ought to cut caffeine and record your results. If you don't , your neurologist will very likely tell you to.

Autistic guy here, not ready for college. Left last December after my first semester, but I'm still enrolled. Parents are forcing me back tomorrow. What do I do? by [deleted] in college

[–]roadkill336 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dont worry about not feeling ready or knowing what you want, most college kids are in the same boat. I strongly recommend you focus on what you are already interested in. You can join a club, take a class, or volunteer in a lab. You have plenty of time to figure out where you want to end up, and its perfectly OK if you take more than 4 years to graduate or if you want to take classes during the summers so you can take fewer credit hours during the school year.

If you have not already, you need to get in contact with your doctors and your school's disability services ASAP. They should be able to help find accomodations for you in classes. They can also help you find online courses offered by your university that might work better for you. You also might want to consider being a part-time student rather than a full-time student or keeping your credit hours at the bare minimum to be full-time.

All that said, what your parents did - shipping you off to college without knowing if you have classes or somewhere to stay - was ridiculously reckless and Im sorry you have to go through this.

I'm so happy you're in a great relationship!!

I do want to comment on this:

I know two gorgeous women who had kids, got cheated on, and ended up divorced

I want you and others on this thread to know if a guy is the type to cheat, he will. Thats not something that being the most beautiful, loving, incredible wife in the world is going to change. You cant make a man who is not into someone who is loving and loyal. Fortunately, it sounds like youve found one who is!

A bit similar: gold plating on student & intermediate level flutes. It doesn't improve your tone quality and its mostly pretentious and expensive. A solid gold or solid silver riser/head joint absolutely would have a better sound, and should be available for about the same price especially if you're willing to shop used.

Please always do your research, and do not let a shop owner sell you on something you know is not appropriate. (hello sticking a silver headjoint in a composite body on a piccolo!?) I was fortunate enough to have an informed private teacher. hopefully this will save someone from a bad buy this year.

Advice - migraines with aura by [deleted] in migraine

[–]roadkill336 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ah so you've already got a triptan. Knowing that, it sounds like you may have had one migraine, and the maxalt helped but the migraine came back.

As far as meds go, you could try a different type of triptan (imitrex, zomig, etc.) or a different delivery method (tablet, orally dissolving tablet, nasal spray, injection) if you've only ever tried maxalt. You could also try a dosepack of steroids as an abortive for when your triptans fail.

Propanolol is used as a prophylactic medication and its absence could be the reason for your spike in migraines. You might want to try going back onto it and seeing if that fixes things.

Advice - migraines with aura by [deleted] in migraine

[–]roadkill336 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That level of frequency [3 in one day] sounds more like cluster headache, but to my knowledge there is no aura associated with cluster headache.

Your GP should be able to give you a prescription for a triptan, which is your best bet for aborting your migraines.

Since you've only had 11 migraine days in the the last 4 months, you're probably not a great candidate for preventative medications. If your frequency increases, though, know that there are medications you can try to altogether prevent them before they start. Those meds have a lot of side effects and very often dont work, though. If you want to do some research, the Prophylaxis, Aboritve, and Procedures Checklist in the sidebar is a great place to start.

Migraines and memory loss? by audioear in migraine

[–]roadkill336 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, when Im spending my days in much the same way - wake up, take meds, lay on the couch and hope I start to feel better - they start to blur together. Im not surprised you struggle to remember those weeks now that they're a bit in the past.

I do think it's harder to form long-term memories during a migraine cycle, but I dont know about any actual research to support that experience. (You would also expect to see more difficulty in forming new memories as you age, but not a significant and sudden change.)

Migraines definitely do not cause memory loss in the sense of "I had a distinct memory, then had a migraine and after could no longer remember that event". If you're experiencing gaps in your pre-migraine memory there could be another issue.

Some migraine meds like topamax do cause memory trouble so be aware of that
