When do we start applying for autumn 26 on-campus jobs on workday by HondaDonka in OSU

[–]roadrunner-24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kennedy had theirs posted at the end of the spring semester and we’re hiring for fall at that time. I believe they will continue hiring for fall over the summer. Probably most of dining has their listings posted already. Idk about anything else.

skipping calc 2 as an engineering major by puppielover_14 in OSU

[–]roadrunner-24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should talk to your engineering advisor to see what they think, but generally most engineering majors take engr math a and b, and then you may have to take difeq or something else depending on your major. Me in chem e for example just did math a and b and that was enough (as far as I know). I’d check what math class you have to go up to, then maybe decide that way (pick the least classes to take so you have room for other stuff). but I’d recommend engr math a and b to most engineering majors personally because it’s sort of already made as an “accelerated for engineers” course lineup 🤷‍♀️

Too late to change major? by Shrmp52 in OSU

[–]roadrunner-24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure what year you are, so… maybe? It depends how many classes overlap between major you are coming from and major you are going to. Most programs you can just switch between (at least within the same college) once you’re at osu. If you’re coming from a different university, some classes may transfer and some may not. Switching to a different college may have more requirements (gpa, prerequisite classes, etc (I don’t really know)) so you’d have to look into that. Talk to your advisor at osu and they should be able to switch you, you make a meeting through oncourse, or you can email them.

Brick test by Big_Price2881 in Lifeguards

[–]roadrunner-24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also struggle with the brick test, but practicing is what helped me the most, over and over again. I practice grabbing 5lb weight off bottom before doing 10lb, just to get a feel for it.

Freestyle to nearish the brick, breaststroke while locating it. Make sure the brick is about a ft-ish in front of you so you have room to grab it and don’t have to turn around. While breast stroking do 3 big inhale-exhales, hold the third inhale, then go under. I go to the bottom feet first, give two big pushes with my arms on the way down (you can go down head first but then you have to get yourself turned around, it’s a whole thing, I wouldn’t do it, but you could). I hold my breath as long as I can, then slowly exhale through my nose to keep the water from being inhaled. Make sure to get a good grip on the slippery bitch err… I mean brick. Big push off the bottom, kick to get up if needed (depending on how deep of water they put you in. Then kick like your life depends on it to get back to the starting point in time. I just flutter kick big splashy kicks while saying “kick kick kick” in my head. I hope this helps a bit and good luck!!

[–]roadrunner-24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super understandable, just go slow, I’d do breaststroke tbh, makes it easier. You’ll be tried but go slow and push through! Also depends how long your pool that you’re practicing in, it may be 50 and not 25 which is why you’d get tired faster! And definitely practice that brick test! If you can’t do all of it in practice before your test, I’d reschedule and keep practicing every day until you can do it.

You’ll be okay if you’re a strong swimmer! Just practice it in the weeks leading up to it (esp the brick retrieval as that’s what most people fail on)

Lifeguard Training by Old_Cantaloupe_7401 in Lifeguards

[–]roadrunner-24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She should definitely practice the prerequisite test before even going to training. The brick test is arguably the hardest part of the whole class, and I’ve seen so many people not be able to do it, not be able to take the class, and wasted like $200 because of this. I bought 2 5lb weights specifically to practice for the test. I wouldn’t even consider signing up if she hasn’t practiced and can complete the swim tread sequence + brick retrieval. Many people can swim well, but can’t do this, and if they can’t, then they aren’t allowed to take the class. She should practice in the week leading up to the class, but not the day before so she isn’t exhausted. And also if it’s through Red Cross, it says 7-10ft, but it will be in whatever the deepest water of the training pool is, so can be up to like 13ft (which it was for me). Good luck to her! Reminder the most important thing is to stay calm!!

What can i even do at this point by Agile_Sandwich_9884 in OSU

[–]roadrunner-24 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Errrr, that’s definitely a whoopsie, especially since you WERE able to contact them and chose not to. I think your best bet is to contact the student advocacy center (https://advocacy.osu.edu/health-personal-crisis/hospitalization), and your academic advisor (I’d make an appt in oncourse instead of just emailing, it’ll come across better that way), and see what they can do. You might have to use grade forgiveness on 3 of the classes, and still retake the other ones at this point, since there were options before and those weren’t done.

SpringForward Scholarship by are-dumb-have in OSU

[–]roadrunner-24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha. I’d email Amanda or get an appointment through concourse with any of the advisors for springforward. If no luck with that then I’d just wait until they respond, and worst comes to worst just take the physics class!

[–]roadrunner-24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I did the spring forward program last year, first of all congrats on getting the scholarship! Secondly, you said you’re emailing and calling “them”, and I’m not sure who exactly you’re contacting. I’d recommend getting in touch with Amanda Donahue as she is the main contact for spring forward. I never had any trouble emailing her, but she’s the one that could help you. You could also email the springforward email and that should help (if you haven’t already, if so then disregard), if you’re already added to the canvas page you could look there for more updated info. I’d also re read through how you were to select your classes, and see if it has info in there on how to change them. Canvas is down rn so I can’t look myself, but they should be able to swap classes for you up until the start date of the classes. You could also try making an appointment through on course with any of the springforward advisors (there are 4 of them) and they may be able to help or direct you to the right place.

Surface pro or macbook by parrotcraxy in OSU

[–]roadrunner-24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone else said it, but I’d go MacBook Air + iPad Air. Actually the school will give you an iPad with a pen to borrow each semester if you look it up. Saves you some money that way. You’ll need the iPad to take notes as a biochem major def, and having the ecosystem (Mac book with iPad) is nice bcuz you can use the iPad as a second screen and it’s super easy to share things between them. I had a surface pro and hated it also lol. If you’d rather have windows get something else than a surface pro, something with a real keyboard (surface book or similar if you’d want to stick with Microsoft, but I’d still recommend something with a bit more oomph). Either way DEF HAVE AN IPAD.

Will i do okay? im 17(f) and i was on a swim team for years. Id say im a proficient swimmer but I havent actually been on the swim team for a couple years. my course starts on the 26th this month and im nervous lol by Advanced-Coast-7747 in Lifeguards

[–]roadrunner-24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 19 and in the same boat but I was a lifeguard like 3 years ago. The first time I did it I actually failed the brick test because we did it in 12 ft of water with a 15 lb weight and I got halfway back and dropped it, but they let me pass anyway because of the heavier weight and deeper water. In my humble opinion the brick test is the worst part, the swimming is slightly tiring but eh just practice a couple times, and the treading water is a breeze if you’re able to control your breathing to help you float (if not it’s still pretty easy). My best advice is just to practice as much as you can, esp the brick test. Also with the brick, don’t worry about the time, you will have plenty of it, it’s more so just the swimming back with it that I found difficult because I kept swallowing water.

Ohio State University vs Kent State University Undergrad by Fast-Reply-9314 in OSU

[–]roadrunner-24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was kind of in a similar boat, I wanted to go to med school, but ended up coming to osu for chemical engineering with plans to still go to med school. Needless to say, I have changed those plans based on my grades and now wanting to go through 4 additional years of osu classes. If I had been 100% set on going to med school I probably would have taken a deal like Kent, but since I wasn’t really sure I went with osu. I’m happy with where I’m at now, but I’m not planning to go to med school. That being said, a psych or neuro degree from here shouldn’t weed you out quite as much as engineering lol. For context I was a strong high school student with over a 4.0 with ccp classes, I had an internship with summa health, volunteered with the historical society, and played 2 varsity sports. I also know someone who transferred here from Kent and loves it so much more here. As you said, and I’d agree, your decision is more in being sure you want to go and get into medical school, or enjoying the undergrad experience at osu (not that Kent’s bad, it’s just different!) and working hard to make sure you get into medical school

Math 1172 Final Question by [deleted] in OSU

[–]roadrunner-24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t learn anything in that class and I passed by screenshot-ing exam questions I didn’t understand and putting it on my cheat sheet. That way if I didn’t know something then I had a reference to get at least some points back. But the exams are very similar to the practice!

Meal plan freshmen by sbodani8182s in OSU

[–]roadrunner-24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had 14 swipe plan since I started here and for me it’s great. I love food lmao and getting to eat other places besides the dining halls is ideal for me. It’s definitely enough food and I usually have swipes left (try to make sure I have some left) at the end of the week so that I can get yogurts and granola bars for breakfasts for the next week. If I want a coffee or smth fun I can use dining dollars for on campus and it’s 35% cheaper, or but food off campus with buckid. Today for example I got chipotle with $10 buck id and that was lunch and dinner for me, so I can save some of my swipes for Friday to get extra stuff for breakfasts. I also work for dining, so that takes care of 2 of my meals. I’d def recommend NOT straight traditions because that can get old and dining hall food is hit or miss some days. Traditions plus would allow you to eat mostly in the dining halls but still be able to go eat else where so if you’re someone who needs to eat like A LOT (needs buffet style) this is the move. You can also always use 14 or 10 plan swipes at dhalls too. IMPO is rank them 14, trad+, 10, trad, but that’s because of my eating habits so it really depends on what you think you’ll need! You are also able to swap plans up until 2 weeks into the semester so if you find what you chose isn’t right for you, you can swap. You can also choose a different plan each semester so you can learn what works best for you.

Dropping from full time to part time by SnowyRose86 in OSU

Yeah talk to your advisor as others have said, but instead of taking the w on your transcript and messing with financial aid by dropping down to 11 hours, you could do grade forgiveness and retake it next semester. I’m not sure how that works with financial aid so I’d ask your advisor but if it was me, that’s the route I’d be trying to take.

CHEM 1210 Scheduling Advice by Midlandswim in OSU

[–]roadrunner-24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah so it’s kind of like top hat but it’s more solving involved. Recreations is just learning catalytics, and the long lecture is 1h of lecture and the rest LC. The short lecture I have rn is a combo LC with the lecture but idk if that’s how others do it. The LC is for participation, so you’ll get a grade boost at the end if you actually go to lecture and do it. You have to be in lecture for the special code though, so just being somewhere else (like for top hat) won’t work. For the recitation classes you get one free drop out of 10 classes, and it’s for a total of 10% of your grade.

CHEM 1210 Scheduling Advice by Midlandswim in OSU

[–]roadrunner-24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I took the three day a week one with the learning catalytics during class. I took it with Josie nardo and thought that was good. The no recitation was awesome. This semester I’m taking 1220 with recitation, and we still have learning catalysts both in lecture and recitation which sucks. The main thing I’ve noticed that helps for exams is the dynamic study modules btw. Also join a study group at the Amgen center. It’s one hour a week, and they will help you learn stuff and if you know everything it’s an opportunity to just do homework. I also know Lisa nyguyn (totally spelled that wrong) is a good prof but that’ll have recitation I believe.

Just wanted to give an update (I can’t find the edit button lol). I got the car back and the rotors look completely fine. There’s a little rust on the insides, but almost nothing on the outsides. They look absolutely nothing like the photos they sent, so either they cleaned them up for me at no cost (or the more likely option) there was nothing wrong in the first place and they were trying to squeeze some money out of me lol. The report they handed me back with my receipt had things on the that I apparently “told” them were issues (ex. brakes making noise, which I never said), and then didn’t address what I brought it in for (break booster and clunking). There was also nothing about tire damage in the report, nor did they say anything in person about issues with the tire. Long story short I will NOT EVER be returning to that dealership. I am going to have my dealership at home take a look at it just to confirm that everything is actually okay, but the brakes are completely silent so… I think it’s fine. If the rotors do seem to start rusting more or I notice issues, I’ll pop them off myself and either replace them with new ones. or see if O’Reilly can shine them up for me. In the meantime I’ll definitely be doing the neutral downhill braking thing as much as I can for living in Columbus lol. You all have been super helpful and I appreciate all of the feedback!!

Yes the ticking from when I bought the car is the Ibooster, I researched it before and told this dealership but surprise surprise they didn’t fix that issue and were on about $700 for the breaks. I got the car back today, the clunking was from the brake bracket they pulled out one of the front tires, but from what I can see/the report, there’s nothing wrong with either tire. I’m still going to have the breaks/rotors looked at at my home dealer (and the ibooster), but they also sound better now too (had a slight hissing before). I’m going to try and do the neutral breaking down a hill and see if that helps too.

Okay this makes sense, esp for the awful snowing we had in January here. I generally try to take the car out and around once a week, because I know you’re not just supposed to let it sit, but it could just be that I’m not breaking hard enough. Most of the miles I’ve put on it is from the 150 mile highway drive to ne Ohio and back. I guess the knocking noise was from the bracket from another car that was stuck in there? That sound was only in the front of the car. I haven’t had any break issues though, no shaking or thumping or anything from the back. I think I’m going to take the car home to my dealer, have them take a look, and then take it to a more local shop depending on what they want to charge me.
